I'm a bit of audiphile to some degree therefore I think music is crucial in any kind of digital entertiment, be it movies or games. I'm sure Stellaris dev team already has their idea for the soundtrack but why not to take this opportunity to talk about soundtrack here? What type of music would you prefer for this game to give the most immersion to it? Do you have some examples of favourite songs that you think would fit space strategy game?

I would like to have some mix of space ambient/ chillout, good example IMHO is sountrack from Endless Space. Another example is more melanchonic Solaris ost made by Cliff Martinez or Home of Light sector song from X3.

Of course battles would need something more energetic :)

I would love something similar to mass effect soundtrack. The trailer music resembled it a bit. Ideally the soundtrack will change as you progress through the different phases of the game. Mysterious sounding and chilling music to represent the fear of the uknown in the exploration phase for example.

Obviously the most fitting music for deep space is modified Tibetan throat singing.:p
Actually that would be pretty awesome in a sci-fi game...

Personally I prefer music going away from the usual you hear in sci-fi, and that's not to say I don't love some of the more generic soundtrack's out there, and a few do things really well, like Halo's Gregorian chant. But I like it when things do something different.
I don't really have a reason to post this other than "remember how awesome this was"?
An example of a theme that's good, it's just also so generic, and 'done before'.
It's great. Obviously this wouldn't fit with this game, it's just an example of something different. The series itself had a more western music theme.
Something else that probably wouldn't fit the theme, but is also an example of something 'different'. I think the guy who did the music for this was trying to emulate a noir style, something like that. Anyway ODST's soundtrack (and story) was still pretty good.

EDIT: Forgot one, also a completely different setting, but a kickass sci-fi soundtrack nonetheless.
Also literally every other song in the game... it had a hum button for crying out loud!
Of course the genre is different, sort cyberpunk, but it's different from the norm. Basically none of the songs I listed would fit with the game, but what I'm trying to say is that I hope to does something either different, or more memorable to usual. The latter is pretty common with Paradox games anyway, so I doubt we'll see anything off there.

I was originally intending to just post a joke comment but I really got into this, didn't I? o_O
P.s Tibetan throat singing would actually be freaking awesome somewhere.

Something good!

I completely forgot how awesome that movie's soundtrack was... Maybe I suppressed it after it was used in Aliens: Colonial Marines' trailer? o_O

What would a Stellaris Guns, Drums and Steel(Missile Barrages, m-branes and indestructillium polyalloy?) sound like? I know plain old "epic" metal can work just fine for sci-fi settings as is, but I'm trying to imagine something that does positively sound like space(if that even makes sense) and solar system-spanning empires.
The obvious answer is take the choirs and orchestral bits out and put ambient sections and electronic sounds(that don't sound like acoustic instruments in) in their place, so something like old Cynic maybe. Perhaps something really raw with industrial bits(no precise example comes to mind, maybe Caspar Brötzmann, early-ish Laibach?) might work for a militaristic oppressive grimdark dystopia?

It would be great if we got a confirmation that Andreas Waldetoft can into space :)
His older orchestrated pieces sounded almost synth level, I imagine there must be plenty of room there for a good space-themed score then.
