My computer doesn't like HOI

Hi.

Recently i encountered some unexplained problem with HOI.

About 5-10 minutes after i start playing HOI (1.03b), My computer starts to beep like crazy. The beeping sounds comes from the computer box and not from the speakers. when i quit HOI the beeping stops. It happens every time i play it and once it happened when i played galactic civilizations.

My computer is reltavely new- 94-1.7mhz, with a gforce3 128mb video card, and 40gb HD.
I re-installed the game but the problem continues :( .
I looked inthe device manager but the HD is reportely fine and doesnt even need defragmantation.

Please advise.

I do not know what MB and Bios you have, but on mine.
High frequency beeps when the system is working =
CPU overheated
System running at lower frequency.

Have you overclocked your CPU? or fiddled with any of those settings?

Take the cover off - carefully now - boot the machine up and check that the fans are all working.

Make sure that the tower has at least a 4 inch clearance on all sides and top.
 
What operating system are you running? eg XP
What is the brand of Motherboard? eg ASUS
What brand of BIOS do you have? eg Award

My computer is running with windows XP (SP1)
BIOS: Award Software, Inc. ASUS P4B266-C ACPI BIOS Revision 1002, 13/12/2001
Motherboard: ASUS (intel 845 chipset)

You could try installing PC Probe that came on the CD with your mother board. This may alert you to the potential problem.
 
Sounds a lot like an overtemp warning to me. Depending on the motherboard it could be various voltage or fan speed warnings. My brother had a Soyo mb that would do this. After making sure the fans were working I ended up just raising the alarm threshold.
 
Just make sure there is no problem first.

i installed the pc probe and the cpu is realy overheated...


Anyone knows what is the optimal temp for the P4 intel processor should be??? i raised the bar to 60c/140f *while the current temp is 54c\129f). IS it ok? i surely do not want any problems with the cpu...

i haven't change the settings for the cpu fan. should i? what should be the threshold??


thanx in advance. (even though the questions don't directly rlate to HOI :cool: )
 
I would not want to give out any wrong info.
I would suggest getting that info from the Intel site.

Well, 54c doesn't sound extremely hot. My AMD Xp1600+ is in the same ballpark, temperature wise.

It could be a sound alarm for the CPU fan speed, though. Default BIOS settings (for an Asus) cater for default, high speed CPU fans (ie. RPM of > 1500). If you get an expensive ( temperature regulated fan speed) model, then the BIOS falsely assumes that your CPU fan is broken, and the alarm will sound. The default CPU fan setting for Asus is 1500 RPM, below which an alarm will sound.

As for high temp CPU problems. Intel P4 CPU's have a build-in overheating protection. Upon overheating, the CPU will scale down it's speed. With the lower processing speed, the temp will drop, thus preventing CPU core meltdown.

According to Intel's site it looks like the P4s can all handle at least 69 degrees C. And as noted even if they do overheat they will slow down until the temp is low enough. Tom's Hardware Guide did a test where they removed the heatsink from a P4-2GHz and it continued to operate (slowly).
 
Well in the meantime, the beeping sounds from the computer while playing HOI turned out that the power supplier fan was broken...

go figure:eek:

i replaced it with a new one and everything is ok now.
