Bit of a toughie, this - most of the first fifty years is going to be biding my time and building up the economy and planting colonies.

I'm playing IGC, where the HL only starts with two provinces, Bremen and Mecklemburg.

Some of the years may look a bit skimpy, but honestly, nothing was happening... A lot of time spent just saving up money for that next Letter of Introduction...
Still, there's been a few disastrous wars to relieve the tedium, so here goes...

1492

1st January - On the day of my appointment I address the assembled Hansetag. The Europe we find ourselves in, I explain, is a dangerous place. The prosperity we have created throug peaceful trade, over the two and a half centuries since that first agreement between Lubeck and Hamburg, is a prize that we must keep from the rapacious claws of Denmark, Sweden or Poland. We have a responsibility to our citizens to invest in our infrastructure and to keep ourselves safe from harm. We will also await eagerly news from Columbus' expedition, and endeavour to avail ourselves of any new riches from the routes that he finds.
Our current alliance with Courland and Holstein will be important to us, but we may need to add to it before we can feel truly safe, especially as we may find ourselves sucked into a war with Denmark if it comes to blows with its unwilling vassal Holstein.

As my first act I provide Bremen and Mecklemburg with tax-collectors. The peasants seem strangely ungrateful for this great improvement in their nation's efficiency, but remain quiet.

6th February - The merchant that I sent to Mecklemburg reports that his trade is prospering. I immediately send another to try and gain a monopoly.

19th February - News of Spain's annexation of Tripoli only confirms me in my belief that small nations must band together against the large ones, or suffer a similar fate.

7th March - A monopoly is successfully established, though disappointingly it gains us only one more ducat.

3rd April - A war breaks out between England and Scotland. I offer England a loan but they refuse - however that annoying niece of mine is given in marriage to a flatulent, obese English nobleman - they deserve each other.

11th June - Scotland have besieged the Marches, and my niece reports to me that the English armies are in shreds. They'll be wanting that loan soon, after all..

18th August - France also declare war on England. England accept my offer of a loan of 30d at 4%. We need to make money any way we can.

12th November - Although their armies are undefeated, and the English can barely raise any sort of defence, Scotland makes peace paying 70d to England. I can only guess the war must have been unpopular amongst the Scottish court - in military terms the surrender is pure idiocy.

1493

13th January - The security of the realm is increased as Brandenburg enters our alliance. They have an army of 25,000 men - surely our combined strength will be enough make the Danes fear to attack us.

30th April - Our neighbours Hannover join the alliance.

27th May - I order work to be started increasing the fortifications of Mecklemburg.

15th July - The bonds of friendship amongst the nations of northern Germany are strengthened further, as I make a marriage with a minor noble of Hannover - my eleven-year-old daughter seemed less than keen, but a small child being removed from her home for a life of misery and abuse is a small price to pay for the greater good of the League.

1494

1st February - the state of Milan is no more, another noble city state sacrificed to the Moloch that is France.

8th March - An alarming assemblage of nations is emerging - England, Austria, Bohemia, Lorraine and Spain have all made common bond. Our small band of states would be no match for foes such as these.

14th July - Austria declares war on Hungary, and its allies join the fray. Hungary is friendless.

1495

17th January - Bohemia declines to join our alliance - perhaps just as well, since the danger of being sucked into a war with Austria would have been great.

24th January - WAR!!

The danger has come not, as we always feared, from Denmark, but from tiny Hessen. Some intractible dispute with Hannover has spilled over into conflict, and I decide that I must bring the alliance to the defence of our friend. Although the army of Hanse is small, the combined strength of the all the nations is more than enough to overwhelm Hessen, who has no allies.

To my delight, no member of the alliance deserts its responsibility, and all our armies march to the defence of the city of Hannover.

21st February - 43,486 infanty, 15,898 cavalry and ten cannon join battle with the 23,917 infantry and 10,984 cavalry of Hessen.

16th March - The forces of Hessen flee, and Hannover is safe. A greater prize awaits us - Hessen is undefended, and it would surely be only a short time before its two provinces, with their minimal fortresses, fell to our cannon. I order our troops onward.

4th - 8th April - We arrive in Hessen where we chance upon with the remnants of their army - just a thousand wretched souls, who offer only token resistance before fleeing into the neighbouring province of Munster.
The allies decide that the leadership of the siege should be given to the Hanseatic League. I order our combined forces to assault the capital city Kassel immediately.

17th April - I receive news that Hungary has been forced to cede Pest to Austria.

28th May - Our attempt to storm Kassel has failed, and our troops fall back demoralised. However, just a couple of thousand troops remain within the city walls now - surely our next assault will succeed.

19th June - A band of 6000 Hessen troops have laid siege to Hannover - however 10,000 men from Brandenburg are headed for that province, so I do not worry. I curse myself for allowing Hessen to recruit more troops, though - a band of cavalry should have been sent to Munster to dispatch the new recruits the minute they left the training ground.

22nd July - Worrying news from Denmark - Portugal has joined an alliance that also includes Denmark, Russia, Venice and the Netherlands. Immediately I arrange a royal marriage with Denmark and the Netherlands - I was surprised they accepted, since neither state is too keen on us. A good thing I did though - the Netherlands has over 100,000 troops. When I have found a suitable diplomat, I will try and arrange a marriage with Russia.

25th August - I order the construction of ten more cannon - men are dying in Hessen from disease and hunger, so this siege must be brought to a swift conclusion.

29th October - Austria, with its allies Spain, England and Navarra has embarked on a war with Turkey. While I hate the infidel as any Christian man should, I secretly hope that Austria will find this an exhausting and bloody combat, the better to stay away from us...

1496

1st January - Yet another assault on Kassel fails, 22,000 men becoming afraid of the few hundred souls who remain inside the city. I rail against the cowardice of our troops, but nothing will convince them to finish the job, so I resign myself to more months of siege.

22nd February - The Hannoverians have lost their minds! The men of Brandenburg have defeated the remains of the Hessen army, and yet Hannover surrenders, giving 66 ducats in the process!
Furious, I must leave Kassel just as the city is on the brink of surrender. I have no business to remain in a country we are now at peace with, so I lead the 6,000 men of Hanse who have survived back to Bremen, a glittering prize snatched from our hands by the fecklessness and cowardice of our allies.

The rest of the year is uneventful - we must replenish the funds we have spent on the war.

28th December - Denmark finds itself in a war with Turkey, brought in to defend Venice.

That'll do for now - bit time-consuming, this...

Yeah, I kind of felt that way when my niece got married... ;)

Nice start to your AAR, Seneca. I tried the HL at one time and it followed your story line quite closely. Got to love their trading abilities. Good luck with it.

Let's get the boring bit over with:

1497

Little to report in this year, save alliances and wars amongst countries about which we know little and care less.
Rumours have reached Lubeck of distant lands with vast wealth discovered by the Spanish, the Portuguese and the English - we must make it our aim to befriend these nations and ask to share in their knowledge.

1498

War in Hungary continues - that unhappy land, so recently bloodied by Austria, must now fight off the armies of Turkey and Crimea.
Neither Portugal nor England are willing to share maps with us, even after we showered the Portuguese ambassador with gifts, at no small expense to us.

1499

2nd February - We note that Turkey has been forced to give up Syria to Persia after another of their interminable wars. The idea occurs to me that if Persia were to tell us of far Eastern lands, we would have something to offer the Portuguese. Unfortunately they refuse.

25th October - Hungary is forced to give up Ruthenia and Carpathia to the Poles.

1500

15th February - our ambassador to Portugal talks of the high regard in which we are held in the Portuguese court - yet still they will not reveal their maps to us.

1st November - I am invited to marvel at our new cannons, which I am told can fire balls of metal at the enemy.

1501

3rd April - The Netherlands have captured a distance province from the Turk, called Kaffa - we cannot find it on our maps, but we are impressed with the might of such a small country.

1st May - Milan is free once more.

3rd June - Wonderful news! Our ambassador returns from England with a set of maps, full of strange names and drawings of exotic materials - Roanoke, Seminole, Connectitut, Micmac - how enticing they sound!
Immediately we dispatch an ambassador to Russia with the maps - we know the Russians have no interest in sending settlers far overseas, yet we also know they will be curious enough about the New World to tell us about the lands of Asia.
We now have much useful information to give to the Portuguese, yet STILL they refuse, even though our ambassador reports that streets in Lisbon are named after me, and that our renown in that city could not possibly be any higher [OOC +200 relations - what does it TAKE??]

Unfortunately, my cowardly citizens dare not dream as I do, and no volunteers can be found to colonise the new lands.

2nd December - A strange contraption called an Arquebus will apparantly give victory to our troops in future wars.

It gets more eventful after this, honest...

Hence my AAR, I'm quite a useless player.:D I see some similarities between Tuscany and the Hansa. Both are small but rich, surrounded by many nice targets and noone of them gets colonists. Okay, maybe not such a large similarity, maybe I'm just self-absorbed.

But enough about me, it'll be interesting seeing how it goes for your country.

1502

16th May - Venice takes Bosnia from the Turks. A powerful Venice should be a thorn in Austria's side.

13th June - most worrying news - The noblemen of Holstein have decided that they prefer the rule of the Danish King to that of their own Duke. Our great rival now glowers over a common border.

15th August - Venice grows yet mightier as Croatia is taken from its rather unlikely former owner, the Khanate of the Crimea.

1503

1st February - My chief minister outlines to me a plan he has been developing to give our Chief Judges wider responsibilities, a scheme he hopes will lessen corruption and increase our tax revenue - I tell him I will consider it when we have the necessary funds

3rd March - Friendly relations with Denmark are now vital - a diplomat is dispatched with a letter personally written by me, which outlines our hopes for peaceful trade and co-habitation. The Danish king is reported to be moderately pleased by my overtures.

10th April - The peasantry are reported to be unhappy. The illiterate, inarticulate fools are unable to explain what they are unhappy about, but I am warned that revolts may be possible.

5th June - I am pleased to see Denmark distracted by a war against far-away Kazan,on the side of Russia and Holland.

11th September - Holstein is in revolt against Denmark - I hope and pray for their success.

3rd November - Portugal rejoins its alliance with Denmark. My chief minister told me the news, and I was too ashamed to admit I hadn't noticed it leaving.

1504

2nd May - All of Hansa secretly rejoices as Holstein is captured by the rebels - with no reports of Danish forces coming to take it back, who are presumably freezing their genitalia off in Kazan.

10th July - A great European war has begun. France, Rome and Helvetia declare war on Austria, Spain, England and Navarra, with Britanny, Savoy, Lorraine and Baden also involved somehow - I forget which side they're on.

16th August - Denmark at least is now at peace, with Kazan surrendering to Russia.

THE HOLSTEIN WAR - A shameful episode in the League's history.

1st December - Oh joyous day! Holstein is a free land once more! Better still, Denmark's allies all melt away, not caring to concern themselves with such a petty conflict! Denmark is alone - let's hope Sweden see their opportunity!

1505

15th January - Lorraine is the first victim of the great European war, annexed by France. We are more concerned with events across our own border however, where there is still no sign of any Danish activity - maybe the war with Kazan left them unable to deal with their own breakaway provinces.

19th January - It is now my sad duty to report the most shameful lapse in both integrity and wisdom of my entire stewardship of the Hanseatic League. I had always entertained distant dreams of expansion, but had written them off in my more sober moments as impractical and liable to cost us more in warfare than we gained in land. Now, however, a weak Holstein, with an ill-trained raggle-taggle army was too much to resist. If Denmark would not take her back, then she shall be Hansa's!

I call on Courland, Brandenburg, Hannover and Portugal to declare war on Holstein - yes, it was not enough that the League's reputation be sullied in this adventure, the might of north Germany must be enlisted to crush the wretched Holsteiners.

14th February - Flushed with the exhilaration of military adventure, I barely acknowledge the news that Hungary has ceded Banat to Turkey, leaving a nation barely worthy of the name.

20th March - I begin to realise that I may have made a mistake as we embark on the siege of Hamburg, Holstein's chief city. The head strong leader of the Brandenburg forces insists on taking personal charge of the siege, and on hoisting the flag of Brandenburg upon the city hall once it is captured - as dismayed as I am, the small Hanseatic army cannot argue with the might of Brandenburg. I rue involving the allies at all - now even if the war is a success, the League will gain nothing.

11th May - My heart sinks as a scout shouts that he has spotted the banners of Denmark on the horizon - I only hope the Danes will accept the leadership of Brandenburg and allow them to continue the siege - a Brandenburger Holstein being the lesser of two evils.

No such luck. The Danish commander thanks us for our assistance in crushing the Holstein army, and brazenly announces that he will take charge from here. I want no part of this any more, and begin for a second time to lead my men back to Bremen, undefeated but unsuccessful.

And now for an act of staggering stupidity on the part of the Duke of Holstein, such that I no longer feel myself to be the biggest fool in Christendom. I offer him peace unconditionally - no tribute is required, though we have ravaged his land, and with the North German alliance out of the siege the Danes haven't a force large enough to continue it. He refuses, without giving a reason - does he imagine that I am going to offer HIM tribute? With 15 Hanseatic cannons trained upon his mansion?

Sometimes it seems as if the actions of princes are governed not by the princes themselves, but as if by a clumsy machine, designed to mimic the actions of humans, but entirely incapable of either rational or intuitive decisioning, and that I am the only leader in Europe whose actions are not forced by this machine. But enough of idle fantasy.

7th July - I spend the next months in deep depression, as my foolish allies help Denmark to an unwelcome victory. Why do they not listen when I tell them to leave? I notice with almost total apathy the annexation of Wurtemburg by Savoy. In that big European war. The one with Austria and France. Or maybe some other one. Who cares?

28th August - I throw a messenger out of my chambers as he attempts to tell me Austria has ceded Pest to Turkey.

25th September - Austria annexes Helvetia - I almost become interested.

4th November - Some agricultural technique invented that makes grain grow bigger. Or fatter. Or sideways, or something. Anyway we get more money from it, apparantly.

1506

2nd August - A wait is lifted from my mind as Holstein finally falls to Denmark and is reincorporated into their realm. My allies trudge stupidly home, blithely rejoicing in their part in a war fought in the League's name. I should have helped Holstein, not tried to annex it.

11th September - To my immense surprise, Denmark has been still at war with Kazan all this time - somehow Kazan's peace with Russia omitted the Danes. I have my messengers executed for their false information. Denmark is now 174d richer thanks to Kazan's eventual capitulation, though I cannot imagine how the Khan thought he could be threatened by Danish forces.

After the disastrous Holstein war, my predecessor, Herr Ratzeburg, was relieved of his position - my solid work at the Rathaus of Bremen over the last three years is deemed to make me a suitable successor.

My name is Raisdorf.

I set out my aims to the assembled Hansetag. We must carry on my predecessor's work of befriending neighbouring powers, especially Denmark, and attempt to gain knowledge of the discoveries of Portugal (since we already know what England knows, and Spain and France are too hostile). Peaceful expansion must be our watchword - not in Europe, but in the Americas, where there is rumoured to be much gold.

7th January - Amongst my predecessor's papers I discover a letter to his chief minister, describing his plan to gain maps from Persia to give to the Portugese - this strikes me as an excellent idea, and I send a letter of friendship to the Shah.

6th February - Denmark re-allies with Russia and Pskov once more.

8th April - War in Europe continues, as Savoy is forced to cede Wurtemburg to Austria. France has laid seige to Calais.

27th August - A most surprising development, as France, presumably needing to release troops for the war on Austria and England, gives up Lorraine and Bearn to Navarra. As always, any victory for a small country over a larger one is welcome news to us.

1508

9th January - I send another letter to the Shah - he is reported to be still suspicious, but warming to us somewhat.

27th June - A white peace is signed between France and Austria. The four-year West European War is over, and no-one really one. Far better to stay friends with your neighbours, I believe.

12th September - No more Kazan adventures for Denmark - Russia has annexed them.

1509

10th February - I write once more to the Shah, but he is reported to have barely acknowledged my overtures. I begin to wonder if this plan is an expensive waste of time.

1510

11th January - Dear Shah, I hope you are well. Can we have some maps please? Yours, whatever-my-title-is.

Dear whatever-your-title-is,
No. Piss off.
Yours, the Shah.

22nd September - Turkey annexes Wallachia. This is potentially scary, but we have Austria between us and the infidel.

1511

9th January - Dear Shah, Oh, go on...
Yours, Bloke-in-charge-of-the-Hanseatic-League

Dear Bloke-in-charge-of-the-Hanseatic-League,
No.
The Shah.

14th January - It seems I am not the only one worried by the encroaching Crescent - Austria, Spain, England, Navarra and Baden declare war on Turkey. Thank god for Baden! Where would we be without them?

8th February - Hungary, Bohemia and Moldovia espy their chance to fend off the wretched Muslim hordes.

27th February - We offer military assistance to Persia in the event of any war - the Shah regards us in a much friendlier light, and joins our alliance. Of course, we have no real intention of fighting Turkey, or Iraq or any other strange lands, having as we do just ten ships in our navy.

2nd March - The money I have invested in our civil service has lead to a great increase in efficiency - Baroque, I heard one clerk describe it as...

26th June - Venice and the Netherlands join the new crusade against the Turk. A new fervour to do the Lord's work is sweeping through Europe, and those who will not take up arms against the heathen begin to seem unworthy to be called Christians. I wonder, should not the Germans be involved?

1512

8th January

Dear Shah, In the light of our new-found military bond, and your aweful might, and your incomprehensible munificence, and your unfathomable wisdom, and your unimpeachable virtue, can we have some maps, please?
Yours, the Emphatic Autocratic Hanseatic

Dear Emphatic Autocratic Hanseatic,
No.
The Shah.

This will be our last correspondance. The ambassador from England suggests the perfect word for the Shah, which I forget now - wonker, or something.

10th January - Austria wins the war against Turkey, regaining Pest.

THE MOREAN ADVENTURE

8th February

Our chance to defend Christendom has come - Persia has declared war on Turkey. My devout Catholic wife is in no doubt as to what we should do - Turkey must be punished. I love her dearly, and would do anything for her, so I immediately dispatch a messenger to the Shah (under strict instructions not to repeat what I called him last January)to offer our full assistance.
Not actually fighting, of course - but our words of encouragement will no doubt be more than welcome.

23rd March - I find my wife in tears. When I ask what the matter is, she tells me that her friends in Austria and Baden and all the states in Christendom mock her, because her husband is not man enough to fight the Turk, rather he just sends mealy-mouthed words of support to the Sultan's enemy, and sits back on his fat behind and goes back to counting his money.
I cannot bear that my wife should be humiliated in this way due to my own inaction, so I immediately summon the most reputable banker in Lubeck and demand a loan of 200 ducats. I set to work raising an army of cannon and infantry that will teach the Turk a lesson.

1st July - My actions find favour with the Hansetag - they vote to bestow on me the title of Viscount.

12th October - finally the army is ready, and a force of ten thousand is dispatched to Morea, where it is believed the Turks will not expect an attack, and will be weak from all their other wars.

23rd December - Good news - the Turks' cowardly ally Crimea has left the war, giving Azow to Persia.

1513

25th May - Holstein is in revolt - has God been gracious enough to allow me to atone for the mistakes of my predecessor? I vow that this time the League will be a friend of Holstein, if it throws off the yoke of Denmark.

7th September - After almost a year at sea, our fleet meets the Turkish force that guards Morea - just a single ship. Incredibly, I receive news that our warships were made to flee by this pagan vessel - surely a savage boat could not defeat five ships sent by God? (Sadly the other five must have had captains of weak faith, for God sent his ocean to swallow them as they made their way).

4th October - Turkey surrenders 47 ducats to Hungary - it seems the infidels are weak, so I order my ships to return to Morea, to try to find another way onto shore.

1514

16th January - My wife tells me she will divorce me and God will punish me if we do not take Morea from the Turk - I believe God speaks through my wife, and fearful for my soul I order the cannons to the outskirts of Athens.

21st January - Now I now God has chosen his time to punish the heathen, as Turkey is forced to surrender to Venice, paying the last 74 ducats that God was gracious enough to grant the Sultan.
I order my cannon to maintain the siege, though my weak-willed captains tell me 39 cannon cannot take a city. The Almighty took Jericho with trumpets - who are we to doubt?

1st March - An engineer comes to me with a small cylinder that makes a loud noise when squeezed, and causes much damage to objects far away.

15th April - We begin to hear reports of a holy man of God, who has exposed the corruption and wickedness of the pope. While before my piety had refused to allow me to question the holy clergy, I wonder if God might not have removed his blessing from his church?

1st June - God is truly punishing us - our navy in the Adriatic has been sunk, not by an earthly enemy, but by impiety. I order this holy man, this Luther, to Lubeck, to see if he can save us.

6th June - Luther arrives. My wife spent many hours sequestered with him, hearing his words, and communing with God through his mediation. The groans of rapture eminating from the chapel were wonderful to hear, and my wife that evening seemed all aglow, as though the vessel of the almighty had passed her lips and filled her with its nectar.
It seems God has made his message clear - we must renounce the sinful, wordly church, and become a nation that protests the true word of the Lord - we must be Protestants!

As soon as the proclamation is made, the peasants of Bremen rise up. They have chosen Hell, that is not my concern, but they must be quieted, nonetheless.

25th June - Our small garrison in Bremen is made to flee by the rebels. Immediately new recruits are made to begin training in Mecklenburg - the Papist traitors should enjoy their moment, for it will be brief.

11th July - Russia and Denmark go to war against Poland.

1st August - We hear that the rebels in Navarra have broken the government, and Lorraine is a free nation once more - no doubt Satan's little pixies will be marching this way soon, but I am not afraid as long as I wield the sword of Gabriel.

Editor's note - This is the last entry in Raisdorf's journal before his arrest and incarceration in the madhouse of Lubeck.

I find my wife in tears.
Great passage. How like a woman ;)
Keep up the good work.

I've spent a LOT of money on diplomacy...

Trouble is, I don't know whether to continue this - I've got loads of VP's (for my size) and colonies, and a better economy than England or the Netherlands, but with no combat it's going to be hard to make it interesting...

Maybe I'll skim over the 16th Century, until I get to my upcoming bid to wrest Zacatecas from the French...

oops, mustn't spoil the story...

1515

Herr Hans Raisdorf was relieved of his position and committed to an asylum after taking a woodcutter's axe to his wife's chambers screaming 'Heeeeeere's Hansi!!!'.
His last writings were incomprehensible, consisting simply of hundreds of sheets of paper covered with the words 'All Turk and no play make Hans a dull boy'.

I, Rolf Wilstedt, am charged with both the Hanseatic League's affairs, and the raising of his wife's son (for his wife is retired to a nunnery in Austria), to whom I have become fondly attatched - there is something of the countenance of Martin Luther in his infant face, it seems to me.

There is much to repair - we must replenish our funds, and decide whether we need a new navy (twenty year's worth of income was lost in the Morean foolishness). I conclude that we do not, and order all available funds to be diverted to our land military, that we may one day raise a force that can cross strange continents as easily as a gipsy crosses the countries of Europe [OOC - we're going hell-bent for logistics]

My promise to the assembled Hansetag is 'One Hundred Years of Peace' - I believe that by cultivating our connections with the royalty of Europe, and by choosing our allies carefully, we should never need to fight a fellow Christian nation. No more insane adventures in Hessen or Holstein or Turkey.

I take on Raisdorf's title of Viscount, as undeserved as it is. If I live to be five hundred, I'm sure I will still see men gaining the easy acclaim of the citizenry by training their explosive contraptions upon the Mohammedan.

Then there is the matter of our state religion - the assembled Hansetag are much attracted to the doctrines of Luther, and especially to the doctrine of salvation by faith not by works - this seems to involve little effort, and to leave more time for trade.

13th January - the papist revolters of Bremen are crushed.

25th February - Georgia is annexed by Turkey, whatever Georgia is.

1st September - Wurtemburg is free of Austria

1516

1st February - I write a letter to the Shah of Persia, reaffirming our friendship. It is ignored.

7th March - another war - France vs Spain and Austria, plus various small allies, who have not discovered the Hanseatic way - peace, prosperity and bribery. See how Denmark, once feared across all our nation, is now our firmest friend.

1517 - Josquin du Prez's Missa L'Homme Armee is the most purchased musical manuscript for seventeen weeks - when Josquin himself appeared at Lubeck Cathedral to supervise a performance of the work, many scores of unwed maidens surrounded his carriage, sreaming as though possessed by a strange hysteria.

1518

3rd April - The Lutheran faith has had a strange effect - a band of citizen's, claiming to be inspired by some sort of 'work ethic', appeared at my door some months ago, begging to be sent to America to begin a new life for themselves.
Roanoke has for so long been a name on a borrowed English map - but my advisors told me it grows a strange plant that is much favoured amongst the more decadent nobility, called tobacco, which we might trade to our advantage. Hence I dispatched these possessed fools thence, quite expecting them to become more familiar with the Kraken of the Atlantic than with anything grown in this America (which for all I knew might yet be a knavish English deception).

Yet on this day I receive news that they thrive in their new home, and have already harvested a certain amount of tobacco, which makes its way to Mecklenburg.

1519

Our traders bring us a sack of hemp from Morocco, which we attempt to mix with tobacco and ingest - I forget what gave us this idea. In fact there is much I forget this year...

1520

1st February - Austria is less to be feared - it has ceded Artois and Helvetia (once, though briefly, the jewel of its empire) to France.

1521

2nd January - We gain knowledge of Galleons - we do not gain money to build any.

15th April - The Hansetag, ever mindful of our defence, votes to raise our fortifications in Mecklenburg, which are now the strongets known to Christendom, except some we have heard repute of in Sweden (OOC: random event)

28th August - A band of travellers seeking to make their fortune in Roanoke, were murdered by wild animals there that appear in the shape of humans. At first they were delighted to play merry duets upon the lute with the children of those they found there - then, travelling down-river by canoe, they were stripped of their garments and instructed to squeal like pigs, before being impaled by crossbows.

Oct, Nov, Dec - Another great crusade begins - first Venice, Netherlands, England and Scotland, and then Austria, Spain, Milan, and then Hungary and Bohemia, and also many small nations, make common cause against the Turk. Our contribution will not be missed, I think.

1523

2nd October - More settlers arrive in Roanoke. The English have a similar settlement in the swamps of Seminole, but I think we have the better produce.

HARHAR, I like your style. Good job though, keep it up.
