My provinces are still catholic?

I'm Portugal.
I just converted to the religeon that gives you lots of colonists (i forget what it is called)

What can i do to turn my provinces to the one true faith?

1: Provinces are set to convert as they did in history. I don't think any of Porugals provinces will convert spontaneously. You can always force-convert them though. Make them rebel over and over again until you get them below 5000 in population, then send a colonist OR you can pray for the convert-event to happen over and over again.

In my last game I had a province with wrong religion that rebelled on average once a year for a long time, but their population never went down. They were smashed every time, and every time I stormed the fortress when they had gotten it, but the population was never affected. Pretty annoying since they were just over 5k.

Has anyone actually managed to lower the population of a province?

When you seige a province the population will decrease. When you storm a fortress the seige will be faster and the decrease in population will be less or even have no affect at all. At least that's my experiance. If you want the population to decrease, make the war against them as long as possible.

Gautigoth, thanks for the helpful advice on how to kill civilians.

The manual says something about the chance for the population to drop significantly after a succesful storming attempt, because of the plundering soldiers. I guess my soldiers were too well-mannered.

Keep the province being plundered. That will decrease the growth rate.
However, if the growth rate is very high, a good province with a close CoT for example, being plundered can be not enough. So... Can't be converted.

To keep the province plundered, don't storm the fortress, minimize the tolerance toward that religion, place baillif (who increase the revolt risk) and, if you want, retreat during battle against rebels and come back etc...

It's, of course, only a game tip, but it works.
