Since I had recently read about the history of Benin during this time period, I decided to come up with a couple of national ideas for them. The current West African ideas that they have don't really fit, considering that Benin never used any cavalry and was quite far from the Saharan trade routes. Anyway:
National Tradition: +10% Land Morale
-Isiatua +10% Siege Ability
The wars waged by Benin in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries revolved primarily around sieges. The strategy of destroying or cutting off the enemy's food and water supplies to force a surrender was a critical part of Benin warfare.
-Curb the Uzama +1 Yearly Legitimacy
During his reign, King Ewuare the Great reformed the government of Benin, revoking the right of local chiefs, or uzama, to appoint a king of their choice and replacing it with a system of primogeniture, or inheritance by the eldest son.
-Appointment of the Onotueyevbo + 10% National Tax Modifier
The Onotueyevbo were representatives of the king who acted as judicial channels between the king and the villages. They were also in charge of collecting tribute.
-The Walls of Benin +20% Fort Defense, + 1 Prestige
Benin boasts of great fortifications, with the walls of Benin City the second largest in the world, and the network of ramparts surrounding the estates outside the city the most extensive earthwork in the world.
-Benin Guilds +10% Goods produced nationally
An organised system of guilds formed part of the economic backbone of the Kingdom of Benin. These guilds would produce tools and weapons required by the state, or crafts and sculptures for trading.
-Adoption of Benin customs -10% culture conversion cost
As Benin shifted from a policy of military expansion to one of consolidation, many of the conquered or subjugated states within it adopted Benin titles and social structures, integrating them into the state.
-Regulation of Trade +10% Trade Efficiency
In Benin, only representatives of the king were allowed to trade with the Europeans. This forced all trade with Europe to go through royal channels, allowing the state to keep a bigger cut of the profits.
Ambition: +15% Infantry combat ability
Hopefully this will be of some help should any of the devs decide to add ideas for Benin in.
