I very much hope that the way natives are represented in Victoria will be much more accurate than in EU2. In this time the natives were still a very powerful force to be reckoned with. You had the powerful Zulu which were able to win a battle or two against the most powerful nation on earth at the time (Britain). And of course, past the mississipi river, the native americans were still entirely unconquered so far.

I would really like it if these were actually playable factions. :)

Well, a "battle or two" is hardly quite powerful.

Red Cloud fought the US to a near draw in the Black Hills and got a decent peace, and, of course, Custer made an ass out of himself, but for the most part the natives had sporadic successes in a long series of losses. Geronimo's "victories" were mostly in managed retreats, as were native "successes" in the Nez Perce wars.

In Africa, the Zulu victory at Islandlwhana was pretty much a one-off thing. Occasionally Europeans would stumble into ambushes, and natives with rifles could be dangerous.

I do agree that EU2 had a curious divide between native superstates and mere nuisances. I suspect that Victoria's "claim" system will allow the native peoples some measure of freedom while always being under threat.

Well, most of the natives that had seperate 'states' will probably be in, but that doesn't cover all of Africa and other areas, so I imagine there will have to be Eu2-style natives to fill the void.

I was under the impression that the defeat at Ishandlwana was more due to a good, old-fashion British cock-up (breaking open ammunition crates and finding biscuits, that sort of thing) rather than the power of the Zulu nation.

Well actually a great deal of Africa was covered by "states".

I believe you're correct. Most of the time, the Europeans slaughtered the natives (sometimes literally, sadly), like at Rorke's Drift, a few dozen Brits holding off thousands of Zulus.

I imagine playing the natives would be about as enjoyable as playing Kongo or Zimbabwe in Eu2: do nothing until the Euros arrive and stomp you.

Only if natives are represented so poorly. I mean Kongo had a great deal of interaction with neighbors around it, that aren't to be found anywhere in EU2
