Could anyone tell me if it is normal that Colon would need at least 16 ships to be able to get to Cuba and go back to Seville?
I have search on the FAQ and could not find anything related to naval attrition. I think that it is too high. Colon crossed the Atlantic and came back with only three ships and he only lost one. Maybe I am doing something wrong, if so please tell me how it is possible to avoid such a high rate of naval losses due to attrition.

Just send yor ships back to port after some time. Explore couple of regions and then return to Andalusia. And after you discuver first island, try to colonize it: you will get a port. That way you can shorten time Colomb has to spend travelling to port- you can explore more with less time.

And i think naval attricion is quite realistic.

The more ships u take, the more attrition u suffer. IF u go with 2 ships, there's a high chance u'll lose none. If u go with 16, u'll lose quite a few in the same span. Go with few boats, do not take it too far though and regularly check into harbours.
