In one of my latest games I conquered the USA territory as Germany but I noticed that, aside Texas, California and the Confederates, there isn't a specific puppet to release. I decided to create one, but I'm not an expert in the US political history, so I need the help of the DH community.
amerika.jpg

The name: should it remain United States of America, or something more germanized like Amerikanische Union or Nordamerika?
The flag: as you can see in the screenshot, I used one of the Kaiserreich AUS flags as placeholder. Should the Stars and Stripes remain, or a new flag is more appropriate?
The territory: much like the Reichskommissariats, only the capital (Washington?) will be national territory, while all the other provinces will be claims: this will reduce the massive American IC and increase the chance of revolts against the Nazi invaders. The territory will definitely include the whole continental USA, but I would also add Canada in case the player wants to release a single, big North American puppet.
The ministers: for the political offices, I used people from Fritz Kuhn's German-American Bund (although in OTL it was waning by 1940). Other FA/NS personalities might include Harold Keith Thompson, Francis Parker Yockey, George Sylvester Viereck, George Lincoln Rockwell, William Dudley Pelley, and Lawrence Dennis (although only Thompson had direct ties with Nazi Germany in OTL). I know that officers like Charles Lindbergh, George Van Horn Moseley, Charles Willoughby, and others had FA/NS sympathies: do you think that one of them might have a role in a Nazi puppet government?
For the military offices, I struggled a lot to find vaguely suitable names, and I have no clues about a possible Chief of the Navy.
The leaders: in addition to the 3-4 officers in the cabinet, I'd use a photograph taken at a German-American Bund rally like this one and assign random names to random faces.
The tech teams: no specific ideas here, but we could include those US companies that had business with Germany, like Ford, IBM, General Motors, etc.
The unitnames: no clues besides the vanilla USA names. Something appropriate, especially for ships?

I will work more on this in the next days and take any suggestion into account. I will release it as a mini-mod when it's complete, if anyone is interested.

One guy who might fit both the cabinet and the leader roster is Major General, Dr. William David McCain, though he was more of a regular segregationist. There's also good old H. L. Mencken who - in private, at least - was extremely racist and anti-Semitic - maybe him as a Minister of Security?

Some others who I think might fit are Congressman John E. Rankin, Methodist minister Wesley A. Swift and propagandist and writer Eustace Mullins. I actually went my way to cut up a period-accurate picture of Mullins:

Im working at something similar but its a much more reduced puppet nation that only cover the north us seabord and the north of the midwest. The remaning provnices goes to CAL,TEX and CSA. Canada is not part of it. The name I have given it is the American State, becuse it can also be under communist rule.

Maybe you could consider American Nationalist State as a name unles its some sort of reichskommissariat then you use a german name/word for it.
You could add in Revilo P. Oliver(FA),Mildred E. Gillars(NS), Prescott Bush(PA) for the 1950s and Robert E. Wood(PA)

I decided to abandon the German Bund government and focus on a hypothetical right-wing collaborationist American State (much like the Vichy State in France). I need help to expand the ministers, tech teams, and especially leaders lists.
This is the work so far:

Ok, but I would recomend that you used a different flag/sheild maybe something like a stars amd stripes with much les stars.

A stars and stripes flag could result inaccurate because the number of the States included in the Union might change according to the player's choices. What about something completely different?
flag-dc.jpg

It's the flag of Washington, DC. It could represent a centralized state, and also it's meaningful because the US fascists revered George Washington.

There are a lot of complexities to remember when creating a German-occupied US. Plenty of American radical groups like the KKK were opposed to Nazi Germany (at least in theory, and certainly after Dec 8th), the KKK even being featured negatively in German propaganda against the United States.

I would say the most realistic case for an occupied US would be under some sort of collaborationist military government, and either heavily balkanized or theoretically the successor government to the pre-war US with similar flag and everything.

Otherwise I cant see occupation being feasible what with the huge diverse array of considerably well armed opposing factions in the country and the sheer size of yhe country as well as spread out nature of military bases and arsenals.

A quasi-legitimate, perhaps regionally organized federation of states or a supposedly legit successor government to the pre-war US are the only realistic options imo. Even then it would be one hell of an occupation trying to keep the rural south and midwest together.

EDIT: I also highly doubt Germany would have left people like LeMay in charge of anything after the bombing campaigns of the ETO and Pacific, assuming that occured. Proponents of carpet bombing like him would probably have been tried for war crimes by the victorious government to appease their populations

Yes, we are dealing with heavy alternate history here, due to the complete historical implausibility of a successful Nazi invasion of the USA. But in Darkest Hour it's a possible outcome, and I want to give a shade of believability to it (an improvement from vanilla DH, at least). Which people do you think could be involved in such federation of states?

For a north America I use this DH design.

In overall, I think Germany would be mostly interested to work with established politicians that has some public appeal. Fanatics like Ante Pavlic and Quisling would often be less useful even if it were more fun game wise fun with clowns in power.

I think so. People like Fritz Kuhn and William D. Pelley were just colorful characters without a significant following or authority. After all, who could have imagined that Pétain and Darlan would cooperate with the Nazis?
Also we have to consider that Hitler wasn't interested in the USA, so I believe he would have given power (and free hand) to some kind of conservative reactionary or military strongman.

Here is some tech team I made for my north state puppet in America. It start of very low in the 1930s, but it get stronger in 1940 and 50s.

I give you one basic tech team picture you can use for a start. The Auxiliary Units or Milita defence if you like.

You can take it use it as 1936 to 1944 tech team before your american nation get better stuff.

Thanks. I'm planning to call the militia units "minutemen". Do you know any weapon/aircraft manufacturers or shipubuilders that could be tied to nazi/right-wing movements in the '30s/40s?

I have used: Colt Defense Company,North American Rockwell(airplanes&rocketery),Newport Shipbuilding and New Bell Aircraft.
All of them have existed, but I boosted Colt a bit. I dont know of any company that was that much tied, but we had Henry Ford. Ford is for USA.

I think you can have Matthew Bunker Ridgway as late 1940s land tech becuse he is not a US tech team in DH, but he is a tech team for USA in AOD.
Its best to not use US tech team for axis/soviet america.

Ford Motor Company is the obvious answer, yes. Between Henry Ford's sympathies and the continued operation of Ford industrial works in Germany during WW2, it would be a logical choice beyond Henry Ford himself.

North American Rockwell shouldn't even exist until the 1960s and so I can't see the connection. Willard Rockwell himself would only be the manager of an automobile part company at this point. Colt Defense doesn't exist yet either, and Colt Manufacturing Corporation wasn't that large a player in WW2. (Though it would work)

I would personally reuse a lot of base US tech teams, particularly shipyards whenever they can be used, though I can at least understand the rationale for not wanting to, if there is a civil war or something (though such an event would be doomed if the player has managed to conquer the USA as germany...)

If you needed something different, for an aircraft tech team I would use Fisher Body, which designed and produced the P-75 as a subsidiary of General Motors. Otherwise I would use Ford for that as well. Alternatively we can just use factories as the tech teams instead of corporations, like Lima Army Tank Plant, also historically controlled by General Motors, or the Willow Run Plant as an aircraft tech team/manufacturer, historically controlled by Ford Motor Company. Stuff like Aberdeen Proving Grounds would also be useful as generic tech teams.

Generally speaking most US corporations and particularly defense corporations are friends with whoever the US government is friends with. Having political opinions of your own tends to hurt weapons sales or contract possibilities.

North American Rockwel was founded in 1927 acording to einglish wikapedia maybe it had a different name or segemnt to another company.
I have used tehc teams that is not used by usa incase the american puppet is at war with the US.

Maybe you can use Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant not sure if USA has that one in DH.

North American Rockwell was formed by the merging of North American Aviation (est 1928) and what was then Rockwell Standard (est 1928 as Timken-Detroit Axle Company) in 1967. Rockwell's company only became known under his name in 1953 when it became Rockwell Spring and Axle Company, and as far as I can tell had no aircraft design or manufacturing until its merger with NAA, which was already an established aircraft manufacturer making such aircraft as the P-51 Mustang.

I wonder if nazi puppet USA thing would be even remotely possible. If you want to have indirect control over your puppet, than you have to give power for someone widely known and with relatively expanded powerbase, otherwise he wouldn't be able to pacify the locals. Puppet USA would be either:
- standard USA, with some conservatives in power
- Reichskommissariat Amerika, government would be filled with Germans and one local extremist minion as fig leaf

I'm about to release this mini-mod, since I have found a sufficient number of leaders. I still can't decide between these flags: which one do you prefer?
