I'm using the ModFix 1.3 - now currently playing in Russia. And despite the historical accuracy of having Rurikovitches all over the place I find myself bored by it. So I created new dynasties in dynasties.txt (Godunov (407) - Golitsyn (568) - Yusupov (572) - Nijinsky (584) - Romanov (575)). Now I know that specifying counties (as I did) will have them pop up as random courtiers in their respective courts (if applicable). However I want to change the basic 1066 scenario to give each of these a county to simulate the emergence of those families who'd become powerful later in Russia's history.

I tried with the Godunovs. Kostroma is C407 so I removed this cty from Novgorod's direct control - added it as a seperate cty - created a character and modified the titles file to give assign Kostroma to him - and as a vassal of Novgorod. Fired the game - Kostroma is available - chose it - CTD when loading. So I re-launched and chose the Principalty of Novgorod instead - just to see if Kostroma would be there as a seperate county. It wasn't - and I wasn't seeing anything while clicking on the province itself. Then I let the game run and a few days later Kostroma appears, *not* vassalized, and ruled by someone "of Kostroma" and not my Godunov count

I must be missing something somewhere...

You're nearly there- you just need to add a country declaration. Find a country in the countries scenario file and copy it. Change the tags and character and it should then work.
