Got to thinking about this the other night. I have mentioned before I would love a grand strategy game for Battletech, let you take control of a major or minor house and move units around during the Succession wars. Take planets, direct research, find SLDF caches, hire mercs and so on.. Think Federation and Empire meets Hearts of Iron.

It occurs to me though there is a way to make this even better. What if you tied in the Battletech system. So now, not only could you direct your forces on a large scale but when a battle is shown to be about to occur you could have the data drop into the Battletech game and play it out yourself vs the AI or even another player.

The possibilities are just something I find amazing.

Almost...

Please bear with me for a moment.

I’ve long appreciated that Warfare has three layers - Tactical, Operational and Strategic.

What you describe would make for an exquisite Strategic Layer.

Harebrained Schemes has already nailed the Tactical Layer. : )

But an operational-layer game to bridge between what we have now with BATTLETECH and what you describe, would permit a natural progression and evolution from Tactical, through Operational and the culminating in the Strategy Layer fo Big and Stompy Goodness!

Hmm, so if we are dealing with Lances in BATTLETECH, and Regiments, maybe Regimental Combat Teams in your Strategic-Layer Game, then a Company-to-Battalion focused Operational-Layer would to me make a lot of Mechalicious Sense. : )
