An AAR for New Players

The idea of this thread is for players struggling to get to grips with the intracacies of CK (such as myself) to pool ideas with experienced players and hopefully gain a fuller understanding of CK

To acheive this, it will require the input of experienced players, but also the support of those willing to learn - lets face it - we cant expect our resident experts to give up their time if us less gifted CK players are not willing to listen up!

I think the first collective decision to make is which Dynasty to play (and forgive me if I use incorrect jargon - I`m on the "Inexperienced" side of the fence

I think I`ll take the advice of the experts here (although "Nubia" would be very apt  )

Over to you !!!

Post #21 contains save game for 1st January 1067

Does it need to be a difficult or an easy dynasty/country?

I'd go with Barcelona.

Barcelona would be a good choice. Plenty of opportunities to introduce the basic concepts: religious enemies, rising up in the hierarchy (from duke to king), conversion of territories & religious tensions, spread of muslim technology, good opportunites for piety gain (and hence being a papal controller) etc.

I'll be checking out every now and then, whetever the dynysty you'll end up with. One is never to old to learn new tricks.

Good starting countries for 1066 are the duchies of Bohemia or Apulia.

But since there already is a good CK-guide for Bohemia and there are also many AAR's about Apulia, my suggestion would be the

Duchy of Brittany

Pro
1. You are independent
2. You have some vassals to play with
3. You are close to Spain for crusading and close to Ireland to get some cheap land for claiming

Con
1. The Muslims in Spain are rather strong and the more easier Baltic pagans are far away
2. Your starting ruler is relatively old with a young baby boy born in 1066, so you might start with a period of minority for your ruler

Barcelona in my opinion is to close to the Spanish muslims which means that you will find yourself in a war against powerfull enemies very soon.

I suggest to play on "normal" settings - so in answer to your question; ideally one that an inexperienced player is going to survive; but with enough challenges to learn the finer details of then game

And he can only achieve that with the input of guys like yourself :)

Maybe a duchy in France. You're still close enough to bash the Muslims in Spain when you're up to it, and have the safety of being in a big kingdom so you don't get attacked that easily. That is if you don't mind France being in wars often and taking your troops...

edit: Lol, obviously a lot of interest for this idea. 4 replies appeared while I was reading the thread and writing my reply

Then how about:

King of Denmark.

Small realm, nearby pagans and small competing kingdoms (Sweden, Norway). Hard to crusade to the middle-east though. Huge behemot neighbour to the south, but you don't need to pick a fight with the von Frankens.

EDIT: On further thinking I think Veldmaarschalk's idea is better. I'd like to see how the experts guide Brittany.

Mmm, then I guess Veldmaarschalk's idea would suit you indeed.

I would suggest that wherever you start, try not to start out as a king. If this is ment to be a guide of sorts then lets also deal with the problems/opportunities that come with having a liege. You can always become king later. Having said all that suggestions have pretty much already been mentioned to one degree or another.

A duchy in Denmark, and go after the German coast
A duchy/Count in Spain (my favorite), but try not to pick one with Muslim borders.

Regardless of the final choice, I think this is a great idea, and hope it gets the participation it needs.

Opinion seems divided over whether we should start in France or Spain - with most of you leaning towards France (and Brittany in particular)

Bohemia and Apulia have been done in depth before and there seems to be a current one running for Denmark

So unless anyone has an alternative suggestion, I will make a start with Brittany within the next few hours; run for a few days of game time and then give you all a "state of the nation" report - where we can make court appointments and determine some short, medium and long term goals

EDIT: See post #21

I like Quirinus` idea of playing as a Duke; so this fits nicely with Veld`s suggestion

Thanks for the interest shown so far

Since you choose Brittany I would suggest you to use the latest improvementpack, which can be found here

The IP is a forerunner of patch 1.06 and it gives Brittany its own Breton culture, adding a bit of extra flavour to the project :)

Though I first was for Barcelona I'm fine with Brittany. A good position for intrigue within England and France and quite near to Muslims. Should be a good place to play.

And yes, use the IP2. It's just so much better, especially for countries like Brittany.

Ok people - I have made a start and created a save game (324KB zipped)

How do I make the save available to this forum (short of resorting to compiling a mailing list)?

Cheers

EDIT: SORTED - see post 21
