Well, I was sorta thinking "why not?". I mean, the original POPs are fine. They're just...constantly there. ...everywhere. Even when I close my eyes...

Pops_Edited_Big.jpg

(Not Usable! This is just a preview.)

So I decided to go ahead and try to make new graphics for the same old POPs! Since you have to look at them a lot, I figured it might be a nice little change.

Unfortunately, I'm having a HARD time finding good replacements. I'm not very good at "pixel art" at all, so I need a picture to work with to get them this small. So, I'm asking for any help from anyone who knows were to get images of Victorian people...pretty much. However, I need specific kinds of people. So far I did the Aristocrat, the Capitalist, the Soldier, the Factory Worker, and the Farmer. To completely change things, I still need an Officer, a...Miner? (something like that anyway), a Priest (I don't know if modern apparel is the same as Victorian Era apparel for them.), a Clerk (or a middle class person?), and a Slave (which I haven't actually looked for yet... But given that there's so few slave POPs in the world, I figured it wouldn't be a major priority.)

It's best when the images are already in color. The best part is, photos don't have to be from that era! I can be a photo from now, so long as the person is wearing that kind of garb. It doesn't even need to be a exceptional quality either! It just needs to 'fit', be of a forward facing position, clear enough to recognize what it is (For example, the image must clearly look like an officer even when shrunk heavily.), and...pretty much be in a pose that isn't too strange.

I hope to finish this quickly, and criticism is appreciated for the current and continuing work. Again, I'm having a tough time and help getting images would be nice. If there's something wrong seeming from the preview, let me know so I can fix it! :)

Edit: Forget all of this! I have a zip down below that makes this all much easier anyway.

Those will do! ...At least I think so... I might need a different Aristocrat or Officer. They're very similar to each other. :( But here's a preview, and one you can download. I'll include a "mini" version later on for other displays of the pops so it won't seem to switch between the old and new one in game really.

PREVIEW! This will not work!

Pops-1.gif

If you want to use it, use this one!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

For a quick guide on how to add these graphics, follow these steps.

1. Locate your "...\gfx\Interface" folder within where you installed Victoria.

2. Back up your "pops.bmp" by copying it into another folder, or copying and pasting the file into same directory to where you'll have something like "copy of pops.bmp".

3. Open up the file you saved in an image editing program. (Microsoft Paint should suffice.) Resave the file as "pops" and save it as a ".bmp" file. (It is currently not of the correct file format due to hosting, so this must be done to have the graphics change.)

4. If you didn't save the file into the "...\gfx\Interface" folder within the Victoria game folder, then copy the file you just saved and paste it into the folder.

5. It will ask you if you would like you replace a file of the same name. If you made a back up of this file, click "yes".

6. You're done! Fire up Victoria and see the difference!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please let me know what you think about it. I'm nor perfect in graphics creation, particularly pixel art. I need to know if there's something wrong, or seemingly off. It also helps to know if pops seem too similar to each other. I can attempt to recolor or find new pictures.

(Note: When I'm confident that I won't be doing any more updates, I will be editing the first post to include instructions and the file while removing any unnecessary work in progress images.)

Hate to post a second time, but I'm wondering if anyone has actually tried it? If so, did you like the change? Was there anything you'd change about it?

Feedback lets me know if I should bother with it. :(

I like the images, but when I tried putting them in my game it didn't work at all. If you could get the small version done as well, that would be great, and would give me a reason to give it another shot.

Awesome work Garek ! Thank you very much. I liked the pictures very much but it could be better if you could paint the capitalist's frock coat to black, as of now he looks like a 1920's cabaret dancer I think  . The soldier also looks somewaht small in size compared to other. Can you please make it on the same size with the rest please ?

Most are quite great, indeed.
But as said before, the Capi is quite... strange. :D
The soldier's rifle shall be thicker too. And I personnaly prefer vanilla aristocrat. Is there a way to merge both?

Okay, I'd like to make this as easy as possible, but I can't... Darn hosting is limited in very bad ways. >.< If anyone knows of an image hosting service that'll host .BMP files let me know so I'm not stuck with zipping and hosting on other sites that won't keep it. :(

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Instructions

1. http://www.mediafire.com/?yzrqmw4gwzd
Download, you!

The file is hosted here. There are several options in this file depending upon requests made that varied each time...so hopefully one of these satisfies ya'll. :p (A list of the options will be after the instructions.)

2. Find your Victoria directory, and go to the "...\gfx\Interface" section.

2. Back up your old graphics! There are two files in that need to be backed up. pops.bmp and pops_small.bmp. Make copies before you make any changes!

3. Unzip the file you just downloaded to a place of your choice. Locate where that is and copy what you want on over to the directory you found in step 2. ( "...\gfx\Interface" )

4. You will be asked if you want to replace two files. Click yes and start up Victoria to see the differences!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

So anyway, here's the .gif versions which will probably not work unless you can save them as a .bmp file under the 24-bit style...or what not. (I discovered why they didn't work for some people by accident, as I had no idea what was causing the issue in the first place. Since not everyone can save them with those settings, I made them that style myself so it's easier for everyone.)

Option 1 - Original
Nothing has changed from the last upload.

Pops-1.gif

Option 2 - Darkened Capitalist and slightly larger Soldier.

Pops_2.gif

Option 3 - New Capitalist and slightly larger Soldier.

Pops_3.gif

Option 4 - Paradox Capitalist and slightly larger Soldier
(No picture necessary)

These should all work properly. However, if there is something wrong with them, please let me know. I might be a little busy with school, but I'll still try to get a "perfect" file. :)

Great work again Garek ! Thank you. I most liked the option 2 but I think the Clerk and the Craftsman look a bit alike. Would it be possible to replace the Clerk with a more vanilla style pic ? I'd also like to replace the aristocrat as he ressembles to the Officer. I have a good candidate for aristocrat I can send it to you if you like :)

Yes, it's very easy to switch pop graphics! (I could make a guide for photoshop users even..?)

The hard part is making new pop graphics. ...Well, it's not hard, just time consuming. Anyway, I'd like to see what you have for the aristocrat. The one I found was sorta random and "fit" at the time when the officer wasn't chosen yet. So, link me to it. You can post a link to the image in the thread or private message me the link. I'll work with it and see if it can be used or not. Afterwards, I'll do a temp hosting of that change separately from the other main file before I merge the two. (Variety is always better!) :)

Garek Maxwell:

If you don't mind I modified your POP image a bit and I post it here
I think with this the POP images can be identified easier (the sword of officer, the bag of gold of the clerk, the hammer of the worker, etc.

I have been a bit busy lately and haven't been around much, so I apologize for the very late reply.

I just wanted to say that it is perfectly okay for people to modify my graphics. I got them from google image searches, so it's not like they're my prized possessions. Anyway, if you or anyone wants to post their versions, it's okay.

Also, if I remember correctly, Jpegs will not work for putting it into game. You have to convert the files to BMP I believe. In addition, most image hosting places convert bmp files to something else. That's why I put mine in zips. Just trying to be of some help. :)

Very nice. Can we have the pops_small.bmp version of this (I don't know if it affects the game, but it can't hurt)

Edit: Or, even better, a zipped version containing both. This one has green areas around the graphics in-game.

Just from looking at it:

Doesn't the soldier image bleed into the farmer?I have a hard time imagining the game doing anything other that taking rectangles from the image, making the green transparent, and slapping that into the interface, and the left of the farmer image seems to have parts on the same vertical line with the right of the soldier.

Well, that went well. I post stuff up, forgot about it, then realize I should have offered support for my stuff. :eek:o

Well, I took into consideration the changes others have made as well as the need for support and I decided to do both!

Here's a brand new pop graphic file designed to look even better than before! I also have a new slave pop graphic in there! (Has anyone ever been this excited over slavery before? :p )
Pop_New_6.jpg

(Do not save this image, as it will not work. Use the link below.)
http://www.mediafire.com/?jtmxomuzzym
(Back up your files before copying these over the originals!)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now for support! You only need to read the rest if you plan on editing these pops yourself. I have a friendly guide to help with making everything in the right size, especially useful for those without photoshop.
Pop_Large_Guide.gif

This is what the large one looks like.
http://www.mediafire.com/?zfdc10vkemz
(Download here)

The guide has red lines that are a single pixel wide for each box. Each box houses a pop and the pop can go on to the border without problems. However, if the pop goes over the single pixel border there will be stray pixels. Remember, the red lines between boxes are two pixels wide, meaning that there are two single pixel borders there. Don't go over the entire border for each pop.

Additionally, the pops must have the same color background for all of them. Blurred pops will result in lots of green pixels surrounding them. (There is only one color that disappears for these pops.)

The guides have the correct color in the background, so use that as a base to clean up the pops before using them.

I don't know if MS Paint can save them properly, but these files must be saved as a 24-bit BMP file. They will not work and may cause your game to crash if you use the improper file format!

I have created these pops for my Ottoman Empire game. They should be good to go for many Balkan, Middle Eastern and North African player games. I believe you can right click and save the images and then simply save both of them as 24 bit Bitmap files.
