New unit icons - DH_chtiquick_icon_pack_1.0

Hi DH fans!

I have designed a new set of unit icons for DH (a first version) for DH (v1.01)

this version (v1.0) only include default unit icons

I'm working on a new v1.1 version with icons for major nations

Then i will update the pack with the other nation step by step

the principle of these icons is to have the warflag for the army, the roundel for the airforce, and the naval ensign for the navy in the background.

Could use a few tweaks, but I actually prefer this theme over the DH one, not to say the DH one is bad. It just seems more simple and more forward.

I like them too and am using them now.

Some of your icons don't look perfect and may need a bit rework (especially some early aircraft), but like Liam I definitely still prefer them to the standard DH icons. Yours are just more decent and kind of elegant - somehow a improved HoI2 icon style. Very much to my liking. A few more details in the black parts might be nice though - just like the different grey colours in the HoI2 icons. If that's even possible.

The flag in the background is a nice idea and quite promising. I'm looking forward to the next version!

About details in the black part, i have made the choice after several test to use just black shape with a white border :

It allows to be compliant with the different colors found in the various background which are the different flags.

I tried to use grey scale to have nicer shapes, but the result was not as nice as expected (less than black and white)

But i will try to make tests to improve black unit shapes.

Your feedback and ideas are welcome!

Concerning 1.1 version, i think i will be able to upload it tomorrow evening or the day after, with the major countries (imperial germany, 3rd reich, uk, usa, fra, vichy france, soviet union, imperial russia, austria hungary, italy, republic of china, nationalist china, japan, nationalist spain, republican spain, turkey, ottoman empire)

Very good to see that you like that feedback. Many guys in the Internet appear to dislike negative critics and think it's a personal attack. Great to see you're not one of them.

By the way. The tanks look excellent - I think they are best of your icons. Especially the medium '43 is really, realy great ingame. Probably the main battle tanks will be wonderful as well, but I haven't been that late yet.

Army icons in general (the first hq icon is a cool idea, I've manually set it for all my hq models now) are pretty perfect, in my opinion. If you can even further improve those by trying to add more details, that's very nice. But I also understand your explanation for your choice of black-white. That strong contrast makes the icon appear sharp and clean. Compared with the HoI2 icons they, however, appear a bit... uhm... 'flat' inside. If you know, what I mean? The black color will indeed make it difficult to add more details inside of that specific model. Maybe a quite dark grey instead of a total black? You may then add decent details with slightly brighter or darker greys. Not too sure though, if that really works or will look good. Probably try and error.

The ships are also very good - though I do have difficulties in distinguishing them (e. g. BB from BC) . But that's normal, if you have new icons. I think I will adapt sooner or later. And the unit tag is there in the upper left corner, so I won't be lost. I like the late ships best, especially the CAG 1952 looks good. One excellent shape there. A few minuses get the pre-WWI ships - but I guess that it is not because these icons are bad made, but rather because I just don't like the designs. The ships I generally like least are the submarines. I don't know why exactly, but they just don't appeal to me ingame. Maybe they are a bit small (not counting the nuclear here). But submarines were small after all.

A comment about your air force will come next days, when I have bit more time again.

Another suggestion: Maybe you could make the background of the generic icons (those that will be used, when there is no flag version later available) transparent, like you did with the space of the strength and organisation bar. Since I'm using a custom plate_division.bmp I had to do that by myself. Otherwise, of course, it did not fit for me - the different backgrounds conflicted. And I don't see a reason not to make those icons transparent. But that is probably a very special concern, because most players won't have a non-standard plate_division.bmp.

The work is great. I mean it. Silhouettes are just beautiful and very stylish.

However, with the country-specific icons, I feel some inconsistency between the clean outline of the unit and bright, multicolored (gradient) background. Seems... well... just wrong, like two separate styles mixed in one.

Really like the informative two colored unit / model and the country flag in the background. There was a guy a couple of years ago that did such a set for HOI2; great looking. I belive it was for WIF. Those would be nice. And Ostheims German pack... And Cpacks... And Titan79... And SKIF. Gosh, we have many talented people on this board. Thanks for your contribution.
