Hi,
I am playing SoM for about two weeks and I am absolutely frustrated w/ meteor showers:
-- if cable or pipe leaks, it is my fault, I should not be making one giant power grid...
-- if a dust storms hits and my base fails because I am overrelying on solar panels, it is my fault, I should have been preparing better...
-- if a cold wave hits and I have no subsurface heater and my tanks are frozen, it is my fault, I should have been preparing better...
but if meteor shower lands EXACTLY on my base, it is absolutely brutal, there is nothing I can do...

Suggestion:
make MDS to be available as a prefab from game start, expensive like hell, but it must be theoretically possible to protect yourself from meteor shower early game

IMHO, you just should have prepared better, have enough leeway in your stores and materials to be able to rebuild afterwards, and yes, try to get MDS as soon as possible.

Preparation is not only having the correct counter-measures in place, it is also having enough backup stores to be able to withstand sudden setbacks and not be dead in the water if your systems get hit by meteors. Never build everything of a kind in one place, or at least make sure there are mitigations in place, never store fuel with other things in a universal depot (fuel explosion removes all resources on the depot, not just fuel, but having a meteor hit a depot without fuel doesn't empty it.
