Ok, I've read the rules and tried playing the tutorial map, where do I go now? There are several things in the game that I still don't understand.

1)How do I tell what tech level I'm at during the game?

2)I send out trade posts, but they don't seem to produce any revenue for me. How quickly should I notice an increase in montly revenue?

3)What mission should I play first after the Tutorial?

4)Finally, can anyone point me in the right direction to get some better info on the game. I hate to ask such newbie questions in the forum (I've owned the game for 4 days now).

Thanks

Well, you jump right in and do the GC or better yet the IGC as Russia (it's the easiest to play and you don't have to worry about navies).

As for your questions:

1. There are two places:
a) click on the anchor for your naval tech or the guy wearing an helmet for the land tech. It will also have a slidder for your percentage maintenance that you pay each month.
b) in you budget windoe, mouse-over the red dot at the right of the slider and it will tell you which level you are currently researching as well as when you will attain it.

2. trade posts producre revenue in the Centre of Trade that they belong to. Go to you Trade map view and click on your trade post, it will tell you wich CoT it belongs to. So in order to profit from your trading posts, you have to place merchants in the CoT that gets the income from your TPs.

3. See above, probably the GC or IGC that you can download here: http://www.ludd.luth.se/~doomdark/EU

4. Go to the FAQ forum and read Huszics FAQ.

Have fun

You certainly shouldn't be reluctant to ask questions here.I asked and will probably still asking for some time tons of them. The manual is indeed very incomplete, and visiting the forums is the only way to figure out how the game actually works.

I'm wondering why griffon advised you to download the IGC patch. Not that it makes a huge difference for a beginner, and the IGC indeed seems pretty interesting, but I would think that beginning with the regular (patched, of course) game, playing a little then reading the threads about the IGC to figure out if you're interested
by the changes is more logical.

By the way, don't forget to turn the victory points on in the settings before beginning the Great Campaign.

And finally, I began with France, and i find out it was quite a good choice. It's a rich country, so quite easy to play, and you're involved in colonization, but not at the very beginning, so you don't need to figure out everything at once. I wouldn't want to miss entirely the colonization of the new world (with Russia), wich is a major part of the game.

Also, though it's my first game, it seems to me that beginning with Spain/Portugal (too much involved in colonization from the very beginning) or England/Austria/Poland (seems more difficult) probably isn't a good idea. But what about Turkey? It seems that nobody advise beginners to play this country. Why?

I am a newbie, and I am playing my first GC with Spain. I have to agree with the previous post - do not make the same mistake as me. Colonization takes way too much of your time, and your inexperience makes your efforts not very effective. I let all my explorers die without even discovering Asia - which is a pretty important mistake. By the way, does anyone know if Spain will get more explorers after 1560? I've been playing for like 20 years without one.

Welcome aboard!

Like laurent said - don't be the slightest afraid to ask any newbie question you can think of here. The people on these boards are extremely ready to help. Of course, since virtually every question has been asked before, you can avoid most questions by using the search function to find where someone else addressed your issue before. Also read Huszik's FAQ. That will answer a lot of questions right off the bat.

Despite the inadequacies of the manual, the game engine does give tremendous amounts of information if you know how to use it. Almost everything you could want to ask about, if you hover the mouse over a button related to the subject, the game will give you data about how it works.

BTW, if you want to select a nifty shield to show up under your name, use the "edit profile" function here on the boards. You will be able to select any of the shields in the game for your own.

Welcome aboard! And say goodbye to your loved ones for the next few weeks... ;)

COT & Trade Posts

Thanks for the help so far. I got a few more questions. This time about COT and trade posts.

1) Can a nation have more than one COT?

2) After sending a trader to set up a trade post, do I have to tell it who it's COT is?

3) How can I tell the 'economic value' of a neutral provinces? For example, if I can chose to send a trader to one of two provinces, sticky on what it produces, how do I know one is more valuable in trade than the other?

4) Is there an index that shows which commodities are more valuable on the market then others?

5) Is it worth trying to be the first to colonize or set up a trade post on all neutral provinces?

6) Final question, which is more important to set up at the beginning of the game, trading posts or colonies?

That should do it. Thanks again for the help.

- Yes.

- No, it gets its own COT automatically assigned.

- Depends on the product and its base value.

- Click on the product icon.

- The more, the merrier :D

- Depends on the province :D

You need at least one colony in every general region, since this is a port for your ships to pop in and out of ... hence, opening one colony in the Caribbean early means you don't have to keep trailing your explorers all the way back to Europe to avoid attrition. Other than that, it's probably best to stick down as many trading posts as possible, since they are cheaper... but some provinces are not suited to TPs (gold provinces provide zero trade income, and fish/grain, so little it's not worth it.)
