Does it sound reasonable to have a separate thread dedicated to newbie questions and problems? That way newer players can always turn to a single thread first when seeking an answer or solution.

If others agree with this, then consider the thread begun.
Best wishes to all.

It would probably take an entire new forum, not a single thread ;).

Speaking of newbies, how do I get the nation shield beneath my name?
Edit your profile (link at top of page), chose 'Edit Options', then 'Change Avatar' (at bottom of page).

Thanks for your replies. As you can see I already have the shield. I have started a GC with Spain, and doing nicely (annexed Granada, Algiers and Navarre, and got 2 provinces from France) I'm playing at medium, medium. Pretty soon I'll start with a AAR.

Anyways, i have 2 more questions:

How do I play a country like Papal States, any German States, etc.

columbuskeeps discovering florida, but then shipwrecks before able to return for troops to explore. How can I get a colony started?

Regards everyone

1) If you want to play a minor nation in a scenario simply make a new copy of that scenario file (renaming it to something else), go into the new scenario file using a word processor, and change one of the major country tags (FRA for France, HAB for Austria, etc.) to the tag of the minor country that you want to play (HUN for Hungary, VEN for Venice, etc.) Then, when you select that scenario, the minor country will appear in place of the major country.

2) You can always have Columbus return earlier, so that he makes it back and is able to go on further expeditions. Also, explorers have a chance of uncovering coastal provinces and islands that they pass by, which should give you a start on colonization.
