Hi everyone! I recently purchased the game and just finished my first game. I really liked it but there were somethings that I had questions about and or bugged me that I was wondering if patches fixed.

First, using the same name for multiple provinces seems like a poor design choice. I can get over Dongo/Donga and Columbia/Culumbia, but why are there two Baris and three Natals? Is this fixed in a patch?

Secondly, I couldn't seem to get any of the advanced technology. No phones, planes, or cars, even in 1920.

I also couldn't get the advanced naval ships, despite having all 25 navy techs. The most advanced ship I could build was the Ironclad. What wasn't I doing?

Finally, how do you get to build more advanced fortifications? I could only ever build the first one while my neighbors could build more.

Thanks everyone, this is a great game, I just need a little info to make it even better for me.

1) I don't think it's fixed in any patch. That said, I never even noticed that issue.
2) Did you trade for techs from other nations?

Glad you like the game. It is quite addictive.

1) There was a mod that changed the province names to make them unique, but I don't recall what it was called. No official patches, though. This mostly gets annoying when making peace deals with the US or the UK (Springfield and Georgetown, I'm looking at you).

2) Do you mean getting the techs or the respective factories? Both can be a problem.

In the former case try to keep research funding at maximum all the time and convert large pops to clerks to work in your factories. That should give you a research point surplus that can be used to trade for techs from other nations (assuming that you haven't been too aggressive).

In the latter case try to switch to a state capitalist party in the late game. Your capitalists are too lazy by that time to build much and they are generally uninterested in the advanced factories. This is, of course, assuming that you play Revolutions.

3) Which speed are you playing on? There have been frequent reports of the game forgetting to fire events on any speed above normal. Additionally, you should try for high prestige as this helps the invention events to fire early.

4) If you have researched the required techs you should be able to build the higher levels. As with railways you always have to build the lower level first and then upgrade it to a higher level.

You want the Province Disambiguation Mod. Click on the link and scroll down the page until you see it. It cuts out completely any confusion. It should be incorporated into the patches if you ask me.

You have to wait for inventions to fire, which they eventually will, after you research the right tech(s). The higher your prestige, the earlier these inventions will fire. If your prestige is down in the low 100s, and the Germans and UK have around 5000 prestige, you'll be waiting for a while.

Finally, how do you get to build more advanced fortifications? I could only ever build the first one while my neighbors could build more.

Usually when you're trying to build something, and you can't, hover the mouse over it to see why. You might not have the pre-requisite tech. Or you might not have enough of the necessary supplies.

Thanks. It was especally confusing when I owned two Natals and was trying to trade one away.

I was number one in presitge for over half the game, ending with over 5000, had all the naval techs, most of the arm and industrial ones, but I didn't get any invention events after about 1880 or so.

Indeed, I was more wondering what techs I needed to be able to build more advanced fortifications. Or to trigger the events which didn't seem to happen.

Another thing I've noticed, in both this game and the several others I've started is that most commodiites, especally the important ones, never make it onto the world market. If I don't have my own lumber, steel, cement, paper, clothes, etc. production, I'm not getting any of those resources. This is especally annoying for dye, as it is only found in the Neatherlands and in UK controled India, meaning these are the only two countries that can make clothes, and promote farmers and laborers to craftsmen and clerks (at least without a war to take the dye provinces away first.) This seems like a major bottleneck.

Have you patched the game up to 1.04?

That used to bother me too. I would always end up trading the wrong province and have to reload.

It sounds like there might be something wrong with your install or maybe the version you have installed. You say you just bought the game. I don't know what version you are using but many of the problems, bugs, etc. with the 1st vanilla version have been fixed. So you should install the most up to date patch. There are several development paths and it might be a little confusing to choose which one you want. Follow the instructions on the main page.
