or something else which doesn't have to compete with everyone for expansion territory...

Third time i colonized whole America (except Canada) as Spain, and all times English player got immensely mad at me.

Geez, i sense hostility. The bad thing about it is that we played the GC, and he owns all of France....

(I played as Aragon, so it's not that bad, since i have half of Italy)

But the war seems inevitable :(

Yes the English player always seems to get mad, when Spain does this. Even if in the beggining everyone agreed to play a cutthroat game where anything goes.

Guess what hapenned... i declared war on England (despite he was kinda much stronger than me)

The war went well for England (Stupid Colonna, couldn't defend Romagna from Norfolk invading from Milan, and Italy was lost)

But thanks to Hernan Cortes, and recent TOT, i slowly regained Central America which was annexed by England in response to my colonization of NA.

Then English player (which was very good, mind you) logged off, and we talked a bit later, he called me liar, and such. (well, i said something which indirectly implied i won't colonize NA-though i didn't developed my NA colonies for next 15 years. Not because i promised it, but because my land tech was 4 and his 9:D)

EDIT/Btw, we grabbed Austrian player in 1480 or so. He watched all this...

anyway, next time i will definitly play Russia. At least i won't want to colonize NA (well, maybe except Canada....:D;))

Btw, i kinda admire you BUB, that you didn't give up during our 1.04 game, when you were France, and i Burgundy :)

You have to be very careful about what you say, because it can be interpreted as a promise or an agreement. Part of the reason this kind of situation arises is because there is joy in colonization. If you play France, Spain, England, Portugal or the Netherlands, you're probably doing so because you enjoy colonizing. That Spain and Portugal might have to tone down their colonizing in certain parts of the world or limit it only to ToT provinces is only understandable within this context. And if the other nations explain this to you, and they're unanimous in their opinion, and you are seen to be acquiescing to this reasoning especially by saying something like "seems i have still plenty of places to colonize after all", amongst other statements, then I think a bit of frustration is understandable. Enough to warrant leaving the game? That's up to the precedent the English player wants to set. If his preferred precedent is "don't be deceitful with me or I'll leave the game," so be it. He clearly feels playing with someone he sees as deceitful and misleading is a waste of his time. He's a man of honor and wants everyone to play by such rules.

Spain at her height should be earning 600/month just from her ToT provinces + Spain + half of Italy.

England at her height owning France and nothing else . . . . . roughly 200 a month.

What's lopsided there?

Anyway, that's beside the point. There was purposeful insinuation and deception that pissed off the English player after he found out . . .

I feel it's important to make clear that sticking through a tough situation where your prospects aren't great is quite apart from becoming irate when you're egregiously misled.

But if you're misled, just react accordingly (either diplomatically or militarily). I see nothing wrong with some deceit or hardball playing in a cut-throat game. After all, would the real Spain have cut England any slack?

If the English player is really concerned anout this he/she should camp an army on the the border of the Iberian peninsula.

Unfortunately the English player is a real pussycat and would never initiate war. :)

Yes... But my point is that the English player was war mongering in France as the Spanish player tactically took the new world. It was the English player's decision to focus on France over the new world, it was a semi-unhistorical decision and one they should have to live with.

Well, the Spanish player made DOW instead:D

Anyway, we actually started new game.

Me as Novgorod, JohnMK as Ottomans...

(btw, France was all English before 1470...)

Why Novgorod rather than Moscow? I know the ugric culture is nice, but not a big deal in the long run and Moscow gets a much better army/leaders/position

Ahh... sounds like England in the GC was a poor choice. Probably would have been better if the English player was playing Spain - they can get away without declaring war. England in AoE might be able to do it.

Half the fun of multi-player games (I've yet to play EU2 multi-player, talking about them in general) is pushing your opponent to see how much you can get away with without actually declaring war. Trying to support AI countries, trying to contain your opponent, etc. Basically power-politics and diplomacy.

Trouble is sometimes that will go too far, and you have to go to war (at least a limited war). In reality this is what happened between Spain and England, only in reverse.

Exactly the culture thingie ;)
(btw ,muscovy doesn't get many leaders, i suppose)

anyway, i tried to join Denmark alliance ASAP, but it didn't worked, and of course i was dowed by both Muscovy and Sweden soon..

Fortunately, Muscovy fared quite bad in this war, and was taken out quickly.

So, it went well, without much inflation (currently at 9%)

btw, someone wants to join? We are in 1439 still, and we will resume in one hour. Austrian, Polish, or Swedish player would be welcome :)

Wow, I'm somewhat impressed. I've only tried Novgorod briefly a few times, but unless I am very lucky I usually end up losing a lot of territory to Sweden and Denmark in the initial war, whereas with Moscovy I never lose a war (that's at very hard/aggressive). Novgorod doesn't have its fate in its own hands I've found.

Moscovy gets a decent leader after the first year, I think he is 3341. The 4 shock and 1 siege is very useful when you don't have hight enough tech to assault or have any cannons. I think they are the only one of the principalities to get any leaders at all.

Well, there was one time when i only controlled Olonets, and it was under siege, too :D

But i was really fortunate to kill whole muscovite army quite early.

Now it's 1440, and i'm rather concerned with Ottomans progress. They just won a war against Mamelukes and Ak Koyunlu... I need to crush Golden Horde very quickly...

Anyone wants to play Austria?:D
