Between the years 1070-1072, Diarmait mac Mail na mBo and his son Murchad mac Diarmait mac Mail na mBo, Dukes of Laigin (Leinster) died at the height of their attempts to unite Ireland. Their family's (Uí Cheinnselaig) crest, the harp is the image traditionally associated with Ireland. The family was later successful in bringing part of the country together and yet they at the same time brought their greatest enemy to Ireland, the English. It is thought that if Diarmait and Murchad had not died in those crucial years, their island would have been united and subsequently . This AAR will explore that possibility, though starting from an earlier date in order to guide events as close to historically possible, up to the Battles of Ath-cliath (Dublin) where Murchad died and the Battle of Odhbha where Diarmait died.

University of Dublin, 2027

"Damnit!" Erin looked at his alarm. He was 15 minutes late for class already and professor MacMurrough would not be pleased on him being late the eleventh time this semester. Rolling himself out of bed, he quickly dressed himself, grabbed his books, and ran out of the dorm.

Twelve minutes later Erin quietly tried to settle himself into the large auditorium where the Professor was droning on.

"Now when concatenate a literal string to a named string what is the rule? Erin Lynch, you must have spent this morning studying for the test. I'm sure you'll be more than happy to answer the question for us!"

F***! Erin cursed quietly. "Um well you need to have every other string either be literal or named. And named strings are always in quotations."

Nodding approvingly Professor MacMurrough replied "Good. Prehaps you can after class tell me more about the complex data structures of C++?"

After another hour of lecture, Erin walked to the small computer desk where Professor MacMurrough was sitting.

"Erin walk with me back to my office."

As the two headed out the door the professor started speaking. "Erin you know that you have to pass my class to get that engineering degree right?"

"Yes sir."

"You know it's very important for you and I and all of us to be successful. Ireland is counting on you to respect the struggles of our forefathers and to make their work worthwhile."

Erin rolled his eyes. Here he goes with the whole "Irish identity" junk again. "Sir, the country is doing fine. What difference does it make to Ireland if I goof off or just plain sit around and relax?"

They had reached MacMurroughs office "Step inside please." He opened the door, letting the younger man in first. "You know Erin I used to think your problem was that your didn't care about yourself. That you were simply a green backed freshmen, so wrapped up in the 'College Experience' that you forgot who you were. But your problem is more severe. You don't care about your country." We walked over to a painting on the wall. "Turn around Erin." Rolling his eyes again Erin remarked. "Sir it doesn't matter what I do. The future of this country does rest on me. I'm a modern kid living in a modern world. This history crap doesn't concern me. I just want my degree, a decent job, a hot wife and some money that's all."

"And therein lies your problem." MacMurrough was walking over with a mammoth book. It was dusty and Erin noticed that the pages at the beginning were yellower and older looking that the rest and that the binding and back cover were very new.

"What is that?"

"This young man, is the Annuls of the Four Masters. It's a log of all the great kings of Ireland and since the house of Laigin took the throne Tanist of Laigin was to up on his 18th birthday begin writting in it concerning his life. After the revolution of 1777 and the abolishment of the crown, the MacMurrough family, descendants of the old kings got and the eldest male got to keep it and write his story in the book. See for yourself, I started on about page oo 11,837."

Erin flipped the book over and looked in the back. Sure enough there it was. Simon MacMurrough Kavanagh, Chief of MacMurrough Kavanagh house, Duke of Leinster, High King of Ireland.

Erins eyes bulged while William Chuckled. "My father suggested we start adding that since we had our throne taken from us by force and not willingly. I always used to use it as a pickup line when I was in college. Ah those were the days..."

"Your, you, your the king!"

"Well not technically now," taking off his spectacles he "But had things gone differently in '77 than yes I would be King of the Green Isles. And you can see why history is so important to me. Turn to page 8,643. My ancestor Donncha mac Murchada. He was the one to started us on the path that lead us to where we are today. You owe a lot to him"

Erin looked through the book of Donnchads entry. Upon finding it he started to read.

Yes, there's a lot of sympathy for Ireland. Interesting start, hope the perspective works out for you. I've had trouble with Murchaid myself- specifically in getting his sons to produce offspring. ALways end up relying on Enna.

Forty-four years. Forty-four long years of waiting and now I am Duke of Leinster. My father, may his soul rest forever in heaven, has left me with a solem duty, to unite our island and expand it beyond the seas. Such a mantle to put on ones son, but nay I am not dismayed. I am overjoyed for I know that I will acomplish this duty. My father was a good man. He fought long and hard, as my grand-father before me to make uniting our land easier for his son. But he let himself lose focus, marrying that foreigner and raising his children to be selfish brats! I won't let my half sisters say in court, O no lest they corrupt my own daughters. That type of rabble is not needed, especially when war looms on the horizon. No, those women will be married off as soon as an adequate husband can be found. The same goes for those daughters of mine already corrupted by their foolery. Huh, his softness kept the kingship from him, but for me, no! I will not let that be my fate!

And yet I am constantly questioned. By my court, my children, my wife, and especially that bastard brother of mine. A wenches passion and Murchad makes him a count! Now I will not deny that I have let sin have it's way with me, but I keep it hidden. I do not flaunt my misgivings in court! The nerve of that youngling, claiming fathers title. Bah, I did not tolerate it for a second. If he's not happy being the count of Desmumu than he can with his family go back to italy where that whore of a mother of his came from!

But enough of my ramblings on, I have a kingdom to run. Soon I will be able to claim the throne of Ireland and then we shall move against those English and remove them from our sacred soil.

My wife, how could you? A dagger to my heart you have cast and I weep for what I must do. You told me you wanted a piece of the kingdom, and thus I gave you Santiago. Yet rebellion and trying to steal my familial lands? Dear heart, for what reason have you done this? What great sin did I commit against you? I can not bear this, and yet I must. As a king I can not lose the trust and loyalty of my vassals. And if my very wife is willing to defy her god appointed master, how much more so those who have chosen to be in my service? A vile temptress you are wife. Upon my retaking Santiago you will be bound to our castle in Laigin. And from henceforth, no woman shall hold title in my lands.

Eleven years it has been since I last wrote in this great tome. Eleven years of seclusion and peace and I have finally been able to prepare my nation. The Duke of Leinster is no longer the greatest man in the world. That title now goes to the High King of Ireland. In the near hundred years since my father took the throne of Leinster he could not have dreamed of a more perfect summer. Ireland, united at last. No longer a mere collection of counties and duchys. Ireland is it's own nation now. We will no longer have to suffer the whims of other kings, for I intend to protect my island from any and all vicious lords. It is unfortunate that in these great days of days, Roolb my second son has left us behind. The selfish boy could not stand having a position in my court and ran off to Carrick with the Scots. But it is his loss not mine. At least Emrys appreciates the fact that when he is old enough, the title of king will be his.

February 7th In the Year of Our Lord 1136 Written Directly by Donnchad mac Murchada

Age has finally gotten the best of me I am afraid, but I have lead a great life for my god and country. I have not touched this tome in almost fifteen years, my attentions have been draw elsewhere. This country is so great, so beautiful. I am greatly saddened that I will not see its future victories, her many happy days. Ah but this is the way such things occur. I only ask that my son keep better record of his accomplishments that our posterity may know what we did for our lands.

Ceathair: Good luck :) You'll need it ;)

Glad to see Ireland growing stronger, there's a great deal to look forward to.

That's unfortunate..hope you manage to get back up and running eventually.

I certainly hope you do restart. It was a promising beginning.

Thank you for your support. I will however be changing the format due to a historical error on my part. One there were a few "extra" family members (place in there by paradox I assume) who didn't exsist whom I had to remove (and had already begun to effect play). Two the annals of the four masters where not compiled until the 17th century. Thus, it would have been impossible for the early kings to have written in the annal specifically. However, seperate smaller annuls were compiled to create the annuls of the four masters. I will instead use the Annals of Tigernach as it covers the historical period in which gameplay takes place and prehaps create my own annul. However until I do a bit more research the format may be a little different.
