My clan leader became a leper and this was causing serious problems with my vassals. I'm at 42% and I really don't want a civil war, and as usual ordering seppuku is not an option, so I decide I'll just get rid of the problem vassals with ninjas. I sent a 6/6 ninja (ability 6, stealth 6) to take care of the first guy and that went fine. So I send a 6/8 against another guy, and I watched the progress bar on the assassination... and right when it completed, my clan leader died! There was no notification about what happened with the ninja mission or any other explanation, and my target survived. It wasn't anything dumb like me choosing the wrong character somehow; I saw the name clearly next to the progress bar.

Is this normal? Obviously I'm going to be rather more wary about sending ninja now since my current clan leader has no heir...

It just sounds like bad luck, Furr.

A ninja mission will abort if the character authorizing it dies while it's in progess. It looks like your character gave it up just as his ninja was getting ready to strike, and they walked away from the target.
