The Baltic Crusades comprise a major chapter of medieval history. They were the heroic pages in the history not only for the German people, but also for the principalities of Rus. The images that immediately spring to mind are holy warrior of Rus, noble German crusader and a Baltic pagan. I would like to consider an alternative course of history from the perspective of the Woldemaro de Ploceke (Vladimir of Polotsk), who first encountered the Catholic intervention. Unfortunately, I haven’t found the English translation of the chronicle of Henry of Latvia on the Internet. Same thing with the Novgorod First Chronicle.

I apologize in advance, my English is rather bad. And min Old Ænglisc is ēac wyrse :)
That's a panorama of Polotsk in middle ages:

Let's plunge into the days of Old and years of yore. The days when Vladimir received ærende that the new bishop Albert had arrived to spread the word of God among infidels. These pagan tribes had been paying tribute to ancestors of Vladimir for a long time and the knyaz did not know how to deal with the visit of holy missioner. Should the infidels be converted to Christianity by force or should they understand the ways of Christianity by themselves in line with an old Russian tradition? And he was quick to act.

Dawn. The old chronicler dipped a pen into the inkwell and after thinking a bit began to write:
6709 gere of the ærworuld “In the same summer the king of Polotsk suddenly appeared in Livonia with an army, and besieged the castle Ikeskola. Livi, who had no armor, dared not to resist, and promised to pay him tribute. After receiving the money, the king lifted the siege. Meanwhile, the Teutons, whom the bishop sent with crossbows and weapons, entered the Castle Holm, and when the king came to besiege the castle, they wounded many horses, and put the Russians to rout, who had dared not to cross the Dvina river under fire. "(Henry Latvia VII, 7).

From this point our actions begin.

Lands of Rus and Baltics in 1202

It was said that Vladimir, feeling resentment for the defeat, decided to start with restoring order in his own kingdom. Russkaya Pravda, the Russian legal code, was partly changed. The main changes had to do with the order of succession:

“And ieldest scolde geágnest all the bóclandes and lands, and younger geágnest only goldes.”

So he turned to succession by primogeniture and no one objected.
Lithuanian tribes represented a major threat to all the Russian lands in 1202 (6710 year according to Byzantine calendar). They didn’t even consider Polotsk land as a major obstacle and made raids into the lands of Smolensk through Polotsk directly. Sometimes Ruthenian druzhinas managed to recapture the loot and repel the enemies, but the fortune was often on the side of the enemy. Reciprocal Rus raids were also conducted with the aim of plundering.

“6710 gere. Vladimir calleth all his brethren, his uncles, cnéowmæges, his druzhinas for the sake of crusading into pagan Litva lands. Even the ofermódigaþ Albert sent a word of encouragement. All knyazes ledeth their brave warriors to conquer pagans, not to pillage or gestrodu. ”

Heathen's retaliatory attack

Albert of Riga, our arch enemy. However, Riga has not yet been founded

Legendary Bard, Thank you, messer. I've always been interested in the Baltic and western Rus region too.

Lithuanians have assembled a huge militia, issuing a call to all their subjects. Vladimir has managed to muster druzhina nearly two times smaller than that of the pagans. Being able to avoid a battle, Vladimir had found refuge in the woods, letting the outskirts of Polotsk to be plundered. His plan was to wait for the arrival of his kinsman Vsevolod the Big Nest, the most powerful ruler in Rus of those days, with his man.

Vladimir had a conversation with court chaplain Емельян (Yemelyan) of Polotsk near the forest camp. It was late spring and they had to hide from the rain under a silver birch-tree. The air was filled with spring freshness and coolness. The bird-chorus inspired the hope that everything will be fine.
“What do ye think about the situation in which bishop Albert had found himself?” Vladimir asked.
“My liege, that Latin infidel is in very dark and grim conditions. The Teutons werod constitute only small part of his troops. And yes, they cumaneth only in spring with merchant ships. He is compelled to rely on the strength of the pagan tribes like Lives, Latgalians. And as you know their hearts are weak in the ways of our Lord” Yemelyan responded.
“How could Christ allow such a disgraceful situation? Our ships with the goods are not free to go down the Dvina river and Latgallians refuse to pay us tribute. What is our guilt before Lord?”
“Our guilt is so gross and overwhelming that explanations are useless, my Lord. Think of your rejection of our cathedral redecoration. And your deliberate breaking of Lent.” went on Yemelyan.

“I'm tired of repeating that... Stop! Have ye heard that?” Vladimir became alerted.
“I hear the clang of arms and the neighing of horses. Obviously, the pagans have found us. Where were the sentries looking? O Lord, help us!” chaplain exclaimed in a trembling voice.
“You! Holy coward! It's Vsevolod, Grand Prince of Vladimir and Rostov, his numerous sons and druzhina.” Vladimir’s face was wet with tears of joy.

...They joined their armies and attacked the heathens, besieging Polotsk. And there was a great carnage. And many of the pagans perished.

Time to invade the heathen land has come.
