NATO standard counters?

I use the counter option when I play. I think it makes the game better in all sorts of ways.

However, these counters could become much better:

1. Its sometimes almost impossible to tell fwhich nation a unit is from, the colour difference that should seperate them apart is not a good idea (to many colours look the same). My suggestion would be to put a little flag or something on them.

2. I suppose the counters in the game are meant to follow some kind of standard, I dont know which though. (probably some kind of prewar design)
Why cant we use NATO (world) standards instead? (just a few changes needs to be done)
And it would also be great if the symbols increased in size, and that the quite useless border got smaller.

Second thought...
Maybe this should go into the enhancement thread

Option 1 is being looked at.

As far as I know the game desginers did use NATO standard counters (except for the Motorised infantry where they had to use a bi of immagination).

The motorized infantry is no problems (The NATO standard, STANAG, assumes that all forces are at least motorized). All countries have also added their own symbols to this standardization... so it isnt really a standard anymore. Maybe something is missing among the land units, I havent noticed yet.

However:
What I would sugest, ist to look into the symbols of the Air and Naval units. That was what bothered me the most.
The correct symbol for an aircraft is an 8 but laid down. This symbol is then combined with different arrows, dots and other smaller symbols to tell if it is a for example Fighter-Bomber or Nightfighter divison.

I dont have the STANAG Naval symbols in my head (just some flashbacks form old Harpoon).
I´m from Sweden and we are not a part of NATO, so our symbols differs a bit. Could dig up the correct symbols if someone asked...

And as I said before, it would also be nice if the symbols got bigger and clearer somehow.
The size of the symbol box also indicates how big the actuall unit is, dont know if the HOI interface would support this though.

Now please missunderstand me right, I really love the game, I just see places for improvments, its not just me nagging.
I really admire the work done so far on this really unique game!

Merry Christmas!

I honestly can't see them going for a dramtic overhaul int he counters. Alkthough most gamers know the NATO standard for ground units in the case of planes and ships they don't. Paradox do have a list of NATO symbols that did include Planes definatley. It was adesign decision not to use them. WIth that in mind I am afriad I will have to mark this as NOT A BUG.

Its OK, the game is great anyway, and I certanly didnt ment that this was a real bug (hrmmm... why did I post in the bug forum?) :D

But is there any way I can edit the counters?

I have found the "normal" counters to be in bitmap format, but I cant seem find the NATO counters.

Thank you for your time.

I don't know how. I will move you over to the modification forum. Maybe someone there will know.
