Names of Norwegian regions seems to be a bit "off"

Hi!

Taking a look at Norway leaves me with an impression that the names of the regions is a bit wrong:

Is: Akershus
Should be: Østlandet
Because: Akershus is in reality just the area immediately surrounding Christiania/Oslo, while Østlandet is usually used when talking about the area south/east of the mountains.

Is: Bergen
Should be: Vestlandet
Because: Bergen is only a town/city. Usually Vestlandet is used to descibe this region, especially if Christiansand hadn't been part of it

Is: Finnmark
Should be: Nord-Norge or Northern Norway
Because: Finnmark is only the northern-most part of the region, while Nord-Norge is used for all the territory a bit north of Trondheim.

Trøndelag is quite accurate :)

Rafiki

There's been quite a few norwegian betatesters, and while I can not question your claims personally I am quite certain that they would've had something to say about the matter had the names been as "off" as you say. :)

That being said, I can not 100% guarantee that it hasn't been brought up during the beta since the search-option is disabled, only that I myself haven't noticed any complaints.

OK, seems strange to me, tho'.

In any case, if the existing names for some reason aren't considered wrong, it would be nice if someone explained why they were selected.

I am by no means an expert when it comes to Norwegian geography (I do know that Empire Strikes Back was filmed on one of the glaciers there :D ), but usually the provinces were named after the most prominent/important/best known town in the region (which explains Bergen to me, at least). As said, Norwegians were part of the beta, and if something was wrong it would have been brought up by them, methinks. :)

I have no problems with the province names, they are quite OK.
It's the regions that have names I'm wondering about.

Might be that I'm not using the right term, the manual refers to this as states. I figured it might be "regions" outside the US.

Possibly a question for the mod-forum, but I tried changing this in /config/world_names.csv, but the changes didn't show :(

Figured it out; seems the savegames don't get their state-names from that file, but keep it in the savegame instead.

. o O (talking to yourself now, are you? Well, never said you were that sane in the first place, did I....)

To return to the original question; no-one out there that has any background for why these stae-names were chosen in the first place?

Ah, state names. Hmm... not quite sure how state names were decided upon (except for U.S. ;) )

Okay, I notice that the subject has been changed to say that this isn't a bug and that it is WAD.

Care to elaborate?

Working As Designed, so apparently they had a reason to have it as it is and it won't be changed.

Well I changed it to working as designed as there is no "official" rationale for the states names. Therefore it can't be "wrong"

If you believe it is a "bug" and not a request then please provide a better rationale and I'll see if Johan wants to change it. But given the whole world is potentially exposed to the same wish list I'm not confident;)

Okay, this is what I was looking for; an explanation. Thanks Derek :)

I'm not sure I can provide a better rationale than what I gave in the first post. The names used currently are only for (small) parts of the regions/states.

As an afterthought to one of them tho'; "Nord-Norge" is Norwegian and might "require" translations. An even better alternative is "Hålogaland".

(For a moment there, I figured the WAD designation was because the D was to irritate Norwegians ;) )

I agree. But I also think that the province "Christiansand" should be a part of the state of "Austlandet/Østlandet" (or "Akershus" as it is now) and that the province "Ålesund" should be a part of the state of "Vestlandet/Bergenhus" (or "Bergen" as it is now). I also suggest that you change the name of the northernmost state in Norway to "Nord-Noreg/Nord-Norge/Hålogaland". Well - that`s at leat my opinion.

And: we have official names on the regions of Norway. It is (the fylkes/provinces in parantes):
Vestlandet (Møre og Romsdal, Sogn og Fjordane, Hordaland and Rogaland)
Trøndelag/Midt-Noreg/Midt-Norge (Nord-Trøndelag and Sør-Trøndelag)
Nord-Noreg/Nord-Norge (Nordland, Troms and Finnmark)
Austlandet/Østlandet (all others, including what some like to call Sørlandet)

Ok - It`s no bug, but I think you should change it anyway. It would be much more fun for us Norwegians...
