If you read the title you know the type of people on valknet I'm talking about. The ultra-newbies who shout "gogogo" and "WTF does this take so long"
I was just thinking, what tales of terrors can you tell of these fellows? Anything like the UK who after 10 months had 99 dissident, a Canadian Ireland (Apparently they [Ireland] joined the Axis, quess the rest). Or the German player who lost to Poland in Feb 36 (WEas it 1.01 or 1.02). Sure, we are all newbies once, some or just more than others.

So, tell stories and give tips for figuring out a ultra-newbie in time (They are annoying [If you tell them how to chat], want action all the time or refuse to do anything at all etc.)

PS. I just wanted some fun thread. Newbie-bashing is a noble sport.

I thought about telling a few stories and then remembering the horrors caused my post-traumatic stress syndrome to kick in...

Okay, here's one...

I took over UK in 37 after a newbie bailed from the game.

Royal Navy had all generic leaders

German infantry had all of Scotland

Dissent was at 55%

No resources (the guy never set up convoys and the starting ones were all red)

Oh, and for some reason I was at war with Afghanistan and all the Indian Army divisions were in the Himalayias in 0 Org provinces...

Once I came across someone who refused to cut off their caps lock and apparently hardly knew English. I advise everyone to play just with people you know or make sure the people you are playing with can fluently speak English and are easy to get along with in the lobby.

yeeeeeup

yup,

newbies will be newbies. we were all newbies once. hell i didnt even know how to chat on my first MP game... and the worst part of it is you couldnt ask anybody in-game could you? heh

my funniest experience was when i took over japan, and the newb had the whole japanese fleet all over the place. Strategic? i didnt think so, especially finding my grand Japanese carriers all by their lonesome with no planes on the the deck.

or the SU i took over with only 80 infantry while the germans had 160++...Infantry.

or the UK with ships with no org and no oil....overextended travel and sinking in the water, with the nearest port.....so so very far away.

the list can go on and on and on....

worst of course is the failure to understand simple instructions on the Valk, like dont come in unless invited. Or simply, dont leave....let everybody download the save file first......etc ad nauseum....

:D

Hmm. What personally annoys me is that playing from 36 does not really work. Ok, playing from 39 is a solution, but I want to be able to actually form my country and research what I think is important. But most of the Axis players seem to start early expanding like crazy just to be crushed shortly after. So I am actually working on a tinkered end '38 savegame which consists of savegames I played. That way I could ensure everything is working ok, leaders are assigned and the progress is somewhat balanced. In that savegame Germany would be ready for war - hopefully leading to better games...

Ooops, have to post some in modding forum to check if it actually works that way - at least it worked when I made a small test ;)

Yeah, going berserk seems to be very tempting for the Germany players in '36. Had a few games like that, but since Germany lost all of them it is now normally peaceful at least until early '39 in our gamegroup. (Apart from Italy, normally goes on a balkan annexing tour.)

Of course this open the possibility for Germany to prepare for an early war (say mid '37), while the Allies and SU are still busy researching tech ... .

Newbies... heh, fun. The guy who got crushed as SU by Fledermas Germany in 1936 in 3 or so months was the best.

And he apparently wasn't even a newbie:p:D

Any name?

Here is one name

Odin 1970

When I first got HOI I went full blast, Im the kind of player that gets in and goes to war first before reading the manual, then after coming to a point of failure I research.

I got my hat handed to me a couple of times in Random MP games off Valk. One in particular I was the U.S. I think it was 1.02. So I figured I would have some down time to research you know build the big bad US, July 36 Germans land 6 divisions in TX!!!

I redeployed all of my units and had them in the que so I could lower my supply IC cost to research. He rolled me up pretty good and Japan and the UK were pissed, that A. I didnt defend, B. Germany amphibed the US in 36.

Needless to say I learned a whole lot about MP from that expirence that no matter what nation you play you have to prepare for war 1/1/36, and build a military that at minimum can defend your holdings. Thankfully I have become more expirenced, but that was my "Newbie" nightmare.

Strange. I am USA in WAARmongers, its 1940 and i still have 5 shitty divisions total, of which 1 is in China. I am at war with both Japan and Germany, yet i feel pretty safe:D

really?

With 5 divisions? must have Russia addicted to your tech.

I couldnt believe it when it happened, but it did, I got hosed I was so unprepared for it and the German player knew it.

Odin

Yes, I suppose we are al newbies in the start. Still, the fact is that Germany can fairly invade the US at anytime. But if your opponent is a careful one or assumes you are skilled (The US navy can stop most invasions, especially if the ledger shows German construction of transports). Depends on the player really.

Yep. 5 Divisions, 4 infantry, 1 cavalry (the one in Taiwan), the starting US army. And crappy, at the top of that:D

We also almost don't share tech-i gave few to China and UK. Very few.

What do i have is few nuclear bombs, almost all computers, polypropylene, and closing on nuclear powerplants, nuclear warships, turbojet airplanes, and stuff. Oh, and i discovered welded armour lately, too:D

Its beginning of 1940, btw. When i will get into war, i hope to have *a lot* of fire support behind me. Defeat two other alliances (if the game won't end before, that is :( )

Seriously, what protects me is the fact i am in allies, my and UK fleet, and the fact Canada has 20 divisions north of my border, which i could use to defend myself.

Advice

When you play MP dont expect a historical game. Apply this simple strategy

"Plan for the worst, and you will either be right and prepared for it or perpetually pleasantly surprised"

Good luck,

Odin

hey Maur,

those 5 divisions fell pretty fast tonight when I landed the Wermacht in Washington after sneaking over thru the Arctic Ocean.

hehe
