Operation Pinpoint

United States in the Second World War

Difficulty: Hard
Aggressiveness: High (or whatever is the one before "furious")
Cheats: NOOOO!
Editor's Note: The prologue in the next update pretty much tells what has happened before this. I started the game in 1936, aiming for a pretty historical game. In 1940 I decided to write an AAR, because I knew this would lead to something you all would like to see.

Also, to keep this AAR interesting, I will intentionally make "mistakes". Even if I would know an operation would be doomed to defeat, I'd still commit it for RP purposes. RL Allies' every operation wasn't successfull.

1. Roosevelt's Speech

It is the year 1940. Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his ministers have gathered to the White House to discuss the future of the United States. Roosevelt is preparing for a speech, which would decide the road his nation will take.
"Ever since the year 1936 we have prepared for war. Everyone remembers the huge production queues of factories, which continued up to late 1938...leading up to this point, where our industrial capacity is almost 400. Everyone also remembers the strict policy changes and the dissent-filled consequences of '36 and '37. For over a year now, we have been preparing our forces for the ultimate struggle. Hitler's dream of an unified Europe has certain flaws. These flaws are nations opposing him. We have seen the Anschluss, we have seen the one-week annexation of Poland and we have seen the downfall of France. But what has the United States done? So far we have only occupied Greenland and Iceland. We also shouldn't forget the first major operation which happened only few months ago: the occupation of Ireland. Why, many people ask. The answer is simple: we must stop the German war machine. Therefore we have today officially joined the allied forces, aiming to destroy the Germans. Forward, Americans! Forward, and towards victory!".
Roosevelt's speech received huge applauses. War had started.

2. Looking at the situation

Head of Intelligence, Friedman:
"Mr. President, the overall situation for the allies doesn't look too good. The Italians have made a major landing in Suez only about week ago, approximately on the 3rd of September 1940. The Balkans are still neutral, but we can already estimate that the Germans are planning something. Our allies' planes over France report that every beach is heavily guarded."

Roosevelt:
"Before intervening in Africa, we will hold back and observe how the Italians do. Meanwhile, we should send our bombers and destroy industrial centers in German-occupied regions."

Friedman:
"What about our huge navy of 108 flotillas and 24 divisions, waiting in England? We sure need an operation to show the Germans!"
Roosevelt:
"Don't be hasty.. We must scout the surrounding areas and see if we can find a place to land in. In addition, the fleet is almost out of fuel due to its long journey from Washington."

A later report says that there is, however, a place to land on. Fighters over Norway report only less than 10 divisions overall, and two unguarded, assaultable beachheads.

Roosevelt:
"Production is going well. Even if these forces are doomed to die on the battlefield, we can always replace them."

3. Operation Snowflake, Part I

Roosevelt:
"Gentlemen, we have gathered here again. It is time to start our first major operation against Germany. By the end of September, we should have 24 divisions landed in Norway. New convoys will be finished in late November, so our troops will have to hold out for October. German resistance is, according to the intelligence, very minimal, since their forces are gathering to the borders of Yugoslavia... this operation will be called 'Snowflake', although we should not remain in Norway for the entire winter. Once a foothold in Norway is secured, we can give independence to Ireland again. Norway also will be liberated, since a total U.S occupation would result in partisan activity."

Friedman:
"What about Egypt? United Kingdom is losing badly, and the capture of Suez has blocked UK's navy from entering the Red Sea."

Roosevelt:
"The solution is simple: A military aid pack for the British. Send some of our soldiers still in the U.S to help them. Preferably cavalry units... also, send 5000 of each resource to aid them. That should ensure their control of Egypt."

The operation started on 22nd September 1940. Three days later, the first units landed in Stavanger and Bergen.

4. Operation Snowflake, Part II

As said, the 25th of September 1940 will be remembered as the day when the saviors came. German soldiers in nearby provinces was quickly defeated, and a foothold ensured.

At the same time, the 108 ship fleet were ordered to raid any convoys near Norway. This way, the German soldiers' supplies would run low and they wouldn't hold out for long.
World's first nuclear reactor was finished in 28th October, and was constructed in Smoky Hill. The Great Plains will provide a good test site.

Just as Roosevelt estimated, English forces drove the Italians off from Egypt during the first days of November.

6th day was the election day. Roosevelt had good chances of being elected again, but he decided to do a speech and use the ongoing war as his tool.

"Citizens of America. This is Franklin D. Roosevelt speaking. As you know, the war in Europe is nothing for us to worry about. The Germans cannot bomb our cities, invade our beaches or assault our capital... yet. Like the news about European countries falling to German hands one by one prove, Germany could and does possess a threat to every free nation in the world. Therefore it is understandable, that our soldiers are fighting to prevent this from happening. I know that every time a soldier dies, his family and kin will mourn. But everyone knows their duty, and as soon as the threat is defeated, we can enjoy a happy life free of war, fear and terror. My Americans, vote for me, and we can believe in a better future!"

Roosevelt won the presidential elections. However, the armies in Norway weren't advancing barely at all, due to low supplies. On the 15th of December, the soldiers were just about to capture Narvik. Roosevelt officially announced that the Irish situation was "back to normal".

Four days later Narvik is capture. Roosevelt considers Norway liberated on 26th day, when the last German troops in Norway are defeated. Two provinces are still in German hands, but they are liberated soon.

Operation Snowflake is clearly a success. But can the Germans be stopped?

5. The Day of Infamy

Friedman: Mr President, our navy in the English channel has spotted enemy forces on every French beach. Chances of a successful invasion are low.
intell.jpg

Roosevelt: Invasion plans must be cancelled. Norway is not yet completely secured, and we are close to making a breakthrough in nuclear technology.

Friedman: That's right, sir. Actually, today we started to construct a new nuclear reactor, just as planned sir.

In the start of February, the army in Norway encounters german resistance. It is quickly defeated, and the Germans retreat to Vardö.

hamatime.jpg

On 24th February, Operation Snowflake is officially finished, as the U.S troops capture Vardö and return it to Norwegian control.
However, the Germans made their revenge by attacking the Balkans. Yugoslavia joins the allied forces, but their chances of survival are minimal.

However, Yugoslavia holds out for longer than anyone had expected. For over a month, the German forces were blocked by the brave defenders of Belgrade. When the city finally fell on the 26th day, Germany had lost more troops than it had lost in the entire invasion of Poland.

April 6th 1941 is the day that turned everything. The Japanese government declared war on America, and almost immediately made a landing in Philippines.
Surprise attacks carried out by the Japanese took the navy in Pearl Harbour by surprise. The United States was shocked.

Yesterday, Apr. 6, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with the government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleagues delivered to the Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. Very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu...

Half of the troops in Norway were loaded into transports and sent towards the Panama Canal. There, all American armies would gather for a new military operation against Japan.
12 divisions, however, were left in Norway. And just in time, since the Germans took the opportunity and made an invasion to unguarded Oslo and the nearby regions:

When the army returned from Vardö, it quickly destroyed the German divisions. Once again, Germany had been driven out.
July 7th, 1941. White House.
Roosevelt: Dear ministers. Today, the German government declared war on the Soviet Union. An invasion of Europe could be possible in a few months, when the German armies get deeper into Russian territory, and probably get stuck in the winter.

Friedman: Mr. President, Japan has already captured Guam, Wake Island and Midway Island. Shouldn't we focus on the bigger threat?

Roosevelt: You're right. A new operation will be required. This time, we'll use our superior navy to defeat the Japanese and capture their home islands.
Also, send some supplies to the UK. It helps them to quell the Italian invasion in the Middle East. We can also hope that they then come to aid us against the Japanese.

A grand total of 65 divisions are stationed in Colon. The first wave of armies, 33 divisions, are sent to rebase in Pearl Harbour.
admiraali.jpg

Back to the White House, a week later.
Roosevelt: Gentlemen, we're about to launch the attack. Here's the plan:
operationseahawks.png

Operation Seahawks. First we will take back our islands, then aid the Philippines and attack southern Japan. Another navy conquers Japanese islands and attacks eastern Japan.

Gentlemen, it's about to start.

I'm sorry, but due to a strange problem with the savegame, I can't continue this. Since it was this early stage, I don't think it really matters. But hold on, a new AAR is coming... and it's DIFFERENT!
