Opposing armies stuck on my islands!

Ok, I'm Britain n 'Enlightenment' US version and I got annoyed with Portugal. So like any good despot I declared war. They invaded Guadalupe, and a province in Ireland. They lost and had nowhere to retreat. Now they just sit on my territories (in retreat mode) and I cannot attack them to get rid of them. Moving other troops in does noting either. I cannot bring them to battle. Any hints? Bug?

They do go away..

If you save and then load the saved game the armies attempting to retreat disappear.

They do WHAT!?!?

Do they reappear somewhere else or are they just gone? Has anyone had this happen to their troops?

That would really, really suck...
