Aplogies if this is covered elsewhere but I can't find it if it is.

I'm currently playing Japan and sometimes when I have given an order to an air unit, the map then stays in the colour coding for the last orders I gave and won't show any other map modes.

Apologies if I haven't explained that very well, but you know when you click on an air unit and give it an interdiction order, for example? The map lights up with all the possible targets with dark grey for any that are out of range.

Well usually after I have given the order the map goes back to whatever map mode I was on (politcal, terrain etc). But it's now developed the habit of staying like that and I can't get it back.

I can still give orders to other land units and oddly enough I get the appropriate colour coded screen if I give orders to another air or naval unit.

But I can't get the map back to normal...

Am I missing something obvious because it is irriating beyond belief! :(

Odd. Never have seen this happen in all the months I play the game, but I do remember something similar happening in EU2 sometimes. There you could clear it up by simply switching between the various map modi a couple of times. Have you tried that?

The map mode buttons don't respond...

Something I have noticed since original posting:

It would appear (although I'm not sure can confirm this) that it happens when I click in the target area and then sometimes I don't get the window for duration and acceptable organizational loss.

So I give the order again (and get the said window to appear) but that's when the map problem occurs.

Also, the only way to solve it is to save, exit and reload.

The map then appears as it was at the time of the save (with the air orders map or whatever) but then the map mode buttons do respond (as you suggested) and it goes back to normal...

...Until it happens the next time!

Out of interest, is there a shortcut for changing map modes? Perhaps that might work.

What version are you on?
Have you installed the latest patch?

Is this in single player or multiplayer? Often times in multiplayer, lag can cause delays in window popups giving the impression that your commands aren't being recognized.

Single player.

Another odd thing: I was playing last night and the same thing happened (several times  ).

I'd given up on it when I clicked a a navy bomber unit and the screen returned to normal...

Surely I don't have to make sure I've got a navy bomber unit handy just for this purpose?

Note: I've played several games before without this problem and his only started since I started playing as Japan.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
4) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-3.

and if none of that helps then,

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.
