Hello there!

I will be doing an Ottoman AAR in DW 5.1. First update is coming at the evening when I get home from work. But just some quick facts before AAR starts:
  • I am not native English speaker, so please be patient with my English, although I think my English is quite good
  • This is my first AAR, I am hoping you will find it interesting

Game itself is the Grand Campaign, played with everything on normal (lucky nations are only exception, they're on random). First updates will be coming quickly, because I've played till 1453 before I decided to write down this AAR. I tried to screenshot everything that was important for me, but sometimes I forgot to press F11 when it was needed, but in the text I will mention it and describe situation (usually I have some screens with impact of decision I've forgot to screen).

Few words for the beginning: I've always found Ottomans to be interesting choice to play. Their starting position, with many uncontested claims, Timur's armies knocking from the east and with Hungary and European nations on the west can be somewhat complicated. But this offers many opportunities as well. Byzantium and southern Greece states are waiting to be annexed and Timurids are offering Infamy free lands. In many games I found myself greedy and too self-confident, thus I was dragged into too many wars and ultimately defeated. This can happen to Ottomans quite easily. But after stabilizing their position real Ottomans were subject to policy of whole Europe, either by preventing wars with them or by wars with them. But after their defeat at Vienna, Ottoman empire started to decline. In this AAR I will be making an alternative history of Ottomans empire, hopefully better than their real one was.

Main goals for this game:
  • Reconquest of core provinces
  • Conquest of what's left from Byzantine empire
  • Making Istanbul capital
  • Adapting Imperial administration (Empire will last at least till 1650)
  • Expansion into the heart of Europe
  • And probably making CoT in Thrace, just to remind real history

See you there in evening's update :)

Good luck, looking forward

Hello there! :)
Time for the first update is here!

Chapter zero
BEFORE HITTING UNPAUSE BUTTON

AyqN6.jpg

Here you can see my diplomatic situation, my vassals Serbia and Bosnia in the east and Timurid threat on the west. Also you can notice that I have total 10 cores, that are not under my control.

whOqH.jpg

I moved slider towards narrow-minded and hired a theologian, so I could enact two religious decisions that are giving me +1 missionaries/year. This is extremely helpful as I will be doing quite a lot religious conversions as I will be expanding into the heart of Europe and I will be moving my slider towards innovative. Momentarily all my Balkan claims are not Sunni, not even my capital is Sunni.

NX1pN.jpg

Sultan is quite averag ruler... Theologian will be probably fired when it will be possible and replaced with someone better (if anyone better will show up).

v07ZB.jpg

Stability investment is priority no. 1 at the moment.

hyjxN.jpg

Armies and forcelimits. Starting with 20k troops Ottomans can make quite a mess in early game.

yn8bS.jpg

Sliders after move towards narrow-minded. National conscripts as nation idea pretty much sucks as Ottomans have quite high base manpower. This NI is going to be replaced as soon as possible.

osIF1.jpg

Current mission - I could not wish for anything better as conquest of Byzantines is my no. 1 priority for the begging of game as they're are usually focused by Algeria, Venice and Caraman, so it's better to take for me than leave it for somebody else. Core on Thrace and +20 prestige kicks ass! Thats total one fifth of obtainable prestige and it will help reaching prestige cap.

Goals for start of the game:
  • Conquest of what's left from Byzantine empire.
  • Re-conquest of as many claims without engaging powers like Castile or Venice.

  • Avoiding Timurids focus, let Mamluks and Jalayirids weaken their armies.
  • No alliances except my vassals - I am on my own

Next update is coming soon (this evening).

Thanks for compliment! For both AAR and English :)
Hoping I won't disappoint you

Chapter one
I'VE GONE AND MADE A MESS

It's time to get this started
5S57R.jpg

DoW on Byzantia, after I loaded my transport with 5 regiments and sent them into Aegean sea so they won't meet Byzantines ships that could slow me down. For conquering Byzantines lands it is essential to be there 1st as they're usually at war with Algerians, Candars and Venetians. My 1k stack in Edrine is ready to march into Thrace as there's only 1k stack defending, hopefully my vassals will come and help me.

lWKDx.jpg

DoW on Janina, I have my core there and I am already at war with Byzantines, hopefully Naples won't honor the guarantee. Naples don't seem to have either powerful armies or navy so I think I've could have hold them if they decided to honor guarantee.

ohmpp.jpg

3rd separate war: Wallachia, they tend to ally Byzantines and last thing I want is 5 year long truce with them in times when they're vulnerable target and easy to annex.

IU7Xz.jpg

Montenegro and The Knights decided to honor alliance with Wallachia while Naples decided to do not honor their guarantee. Cards are dealt and dices are rolled.

AxPwR.jpg

Situation seemed bit hectic but after dealing with my enemies military sieges has begun... I am leading sieges at all 5 provinces that I want to conquer and at Rhodos at bonus.

IgvGy.jpg

While besieging, religious conversions has begun.

nqtPt.jpg

Time to move on reclaiming land that are Ottomans. Algiers decides to honor alliance, but they have no navy and any way to harm me.

4BfIe.jpg

While wars conquest and reconquest wars are raging, Sultan decides to buy with Timurids, let Mamluks and Jalayirids break their teeth on Timurids.

TpolE.jpg

First preys of war, Janina falls and is getting annexed.

lVgby.jpg

More reconquest wars, better be quick on retaking lands that are Ottomans than later regret. Both of their allies honor alliance, but they have no way to harm me.

9ttbr.jpg

Karaman annexed Ramazan, but my reconquest work fine for Adana, at least one war less and two diplomats saved for making peace treaties (annexations).

nPMkU.jpg

Wallachia is getting annexed. Finaly some BB to roll down as time without BB falling down equals wasted time. Soon after I white peaced with Jalayirids and Muscowy decided to help Byzantium - no real threat to me.

aXfON.jpg

I am pretty much sure Sultan was sitting on his ass in home province, but time to move on. All wars I needed to declare were declared and 2 years of regency will give me time to consolidate.

u5qmv.jpg

RR6VV.jpg

oobBF.jpg

Annexations continue, white piece with Algiers and completing mission and new sweet one. Cores on southern Greece, at least I have new direction to expand.

850ne.jpg

White peace with Muscovy was signed after annexation of Byzantium and stability stability level 3 was reached one moth before inauguration of new Sultan.

In 4 years I've managed to reconquest 7 of total 10 my cores that I don't own, conquered city of World's desire and fairly stabilize my position as regional power. With the throne heir coming soon into age who know what will come next. Stay tuned for more updates.

Subscribed. I always start games with the Ottamans and things never seem to go right. Looking forward to seeing how things work out. If you don't mind me asking, what are your game setttings?

Everything on normal, lucky nations on random.

Excellent start! :)

Your English is very good, and I'm looking forward to seeing where you take this.

Game is paused at the end of 1453 right now, so I will post updates quickly till this thread reaches 1453. By far it's looking good, but I don't want to spoiler :)

As I promised, updates will coming quickly till this thread reaches 1453, the year in which Ottoman Empire (the real one) conquered Constantinople.

Chapter two
SOUTHERN GREECE CAMPAIGN

FfjJc.jpg

New Sultan took over the throne one month later after +3 stability was hit, new units were recruited and everything is ready for next expansion.

9bwpU.jpg

At the day of his inauguration new Sultan decided to DoW on Dukladir. One more uncontested claim to be taken. Najd honors alliance, but again, no way to harm me. November 23rd, 1404 saw Dulkadir annexed.

Bk3B3.jpg

Making Constantinople capital, +1 stab seems attractive, but who knows when I could use this "+1 stab" button, so I embrace this decision now, right culture and religion without any cost is also good.

QjW3B.jpg

Golden Horde, ouch, they have 71,655 while I have only 30,000, but they seem to have many domestic troubles. I've decided to take a risk and besieged province Budjak.

jK6a7.jpg

Sometimes random events are helpful, you can see ongoing siege of Budjak on 13%.

JZ9wN.jpg

DoW on Venice, main targets of this war are provinces of Albania and Athens. Shortly after DoW on Venice, I've decided to DoW Aechea as I am currently at war with most of their allies.

pAi9D.jpg

Aechea annexed without problems. Only problem during these wars I've encountered during this war was naval blockade of Bospor-Dardanely strait so I couldn't move my 3rd 10k stack into Europe. My navy can't match Venetian and theirs allies navy. Venetian and Castile's armies weren't problem as well, Venetians just didn't have enough troops to be a serious threat and Castile does not have enough transports to bring threatening count of troops.

66BOK.jpg

My first thoughts were something like this: "Dafaq. What the hell?" With no navy, no army and Castile's foot crushing them I see no reason they've taken -2 stab hit for nothing.

AgK1u.jpg

I've managed to steal province of Budjak from Golden Horde and satisfy them with concession of defeat just after that. One less problem to focus at.

16e6A.jpg

The Papal State, leader of war against Aeachea, offered white peace, things are going great.

aj1DJ.jpg

The world has gone crazy... Although I've expected DoWs from whole Europe, nothing has happened. Probably countries that had interest in fighting me were fighting me already or had truce with me.

HmZKY.jpg

War goals are met. Time for making peace. Algiers offers white peace shortly after without any clash with them.

lGC9h.jpg

Cores on southern Greece, sweet. Another mission is just as great as previous was. I have now casus belli on Mamluks that gives their provinces 1BB cost instead of 2BB with tribal conquest. Shortly after another event "Merchants Complain" happened, +1 plutocracy for free.

OMSHr.jpg

Adapting Imperial administration. One of the goals of the game alongside with making Constantinople capital. -3 stab hit was nasty, maybe I've should have saved +1 stab from "Make Constantinople capital"

d42Nh.jpg

Moving slider toward centralization. Revolts from slider move were easily suppressed. 9 religious conversions ongoing, Empire is now mostly Sunni.

It's now 1413 and I have reclaimed all uncontested claims except one, province Erserum, controlled by Timurids witch whom I don't really want to cross swords yet. I've gained some more cores in southern Greece which will be helpful in preventing overextension if I will be lucky enough to expand quickly.
What will be my next target? Mamluks which I have cheap casus belli? Conquest of Judea is welcome boost as it gives nice boost, +0,5 missionaries/year and +1 prestige/year. +0,5 missionaries/year is handy as I am planning to go fully innovative which reduces missionary count/year.
To see which my next target is, stay tuned. Another update is coming tomorrow morning or evening (before I go to work or after I arrive from work, it depends when I manage to get up ).

Good start and interesting prospect. I'll be following.

Excellent update! You're really powering through. Will your focus be to Europe or Asia though?

Excellent update! You're really powering through. Will your focus be to Europe or Asia though?
You'll see in time, but basically my main target is driving into Europe and taking lands from the khanates when I get stronger to not to be overrun by combined khanates and European armies.

Chapter three
TO EUROPE

Although I've planed to attacked the Mamluks I've noticed something interesting. Hungary has regency almost no armies (3k), almost no allies (their vassal Ragusa, Lorraine and some French OPM) and many rebels.
ZnZHj.jpg

I've forgot to screen DoW so there's war detail screen after 1 day after DoW, no one decides to honor alliance with Hungary, not event their vassal Ragusa. Hungary with many rebels, 0% war capacity and many rebels should be an easy picking.

5mi8c.jpg

It's basically taking lands from rebels. I've seen around 30k rebels during this war, that's almost as much my armies.

vv1C6.jpg

During war with Hungary I've decided to swap NI National Conscripts for Military Drill as Conscripts are usually useless for such power as Ottomans. I've decided to wait with taking lands away from Hungary till I get full stability. But this nice event has happened (but after another that gave me -1 stab), inflation reduction is handy and +2 stab, what to say, nice.

VR4U3.jpg

6 provinces for 100 value with 100% war score. I've open way to rich Aquileiaean provinces. But for now they are ignored as my armies are not strong enough to fight any Europe minor with their allies and HRE armies.

iuauz.jpg

Other European powers focused weakened Hungary like a vultures with intention to claim their lands. Good for me was, that they've forced Hungary to release vasal Ragusa, OPM that was easy picking for me.

rKKRF.jpg

Land tech level 6 and new unit types. I am technologically ready to fight khanates as I was keeping them off with concessions of defeat. 5 year peace from mighty enemy that could've easily crush me for 5 prestige is a good deal. You can see ongoing siege of Ragusa on side panel.

MMEqX.jpg

3 magistrates for +1 legitimacy/year till the end of the game, good deal for me as draining legitimacy from royal marriages could slow me down. I don't like DoWing when I must take a stability hit.

R60sZ.jpg

Ragusa annexed.

I was pretty lucky that I've found Hungary in such a desperate situation, this was opportunity that no one could not refuse. Practically for free I've gained 7 European provinces, in all games I've played with Ottomans I've always payed a huge price for European provinces. With expanded borders into Europe I am ready to face the Mamluks and hopefully I will take Judea for triggered modifier from them. See you there on the evenings update.

you're moving at an amazing pace, interesting to see if you can keep up the momentum. but i fear the number of non-cored provinces will begin to increase your stability and research cost. also are you minting - what's your inflation?
