PaxAmericana

A collection of flavor events for the whole depraved global family!

Have you ever found yourself desiring more zing in your life? Does spending months at a time without seeing events bore you to tears? Do you wonder endlessly how best to connect to the culture of the times Darkest Hour portrays? If you answered no to all of these questions without hesitation, congratulations: you don't need this mod. If, however, you even considered answering yes to any or all of them, then PaxAmericana is the mod for you.

What is PaxAmericana, I imagine you ask? Simply put, it aims to create a proper atmosphere for games of Darkest Hour through the gratuitous use of flavor events. As the name of the mod suggests, I will at least initially focus on the United States, though not to the complete exclusion of other countries. I have assembled a list of 265 projected events from 1933 through 1991, and I have plans to expand it as time goes on; these events include such things as a rewritten series of U.S. presidential election events, but the vast majority will have little to no non-flavor effect. In addition, each event will, if possible, have a unique event picture associated with it.

Included below is a list of the event ideas I have come up with on my own. As should be obvious, the events extend beyond the 1964 end date of the base game; this is because, I admit, I was really hoping for a Cold War game to be announced at PDXCON. PaxAmericana was originally intended for that. However, the next best thing is New World Order 2, which extends Darkest Hour's end date through the Cold War. Hence, though I am not affiliated with NWO2's development in any way, PaxAmericana will be ully compatible with that mod, even if I have to maintain two separate versions of the mod.

Anyway, enough rambling from me. Cue the events list:

Now, with that out of the way, I want to open this up to input from the rest of y'all. Most, if not all, of my list will be included in the first few versions of PaxAmericana, but I want to hear feedback from the community. Are there any of the events on my list that are confusing, or that should be let out? Are there any events that you would like to see included that aren't currently on the list? Do you think that this whole project is a waste of my time? Let me know, please. Don't be scared to put in a suggestion or two. I don't bite.

(Reserved, just in case.)

(Also reserved.)

(This one's reserved, too.)

(Heck, might as well reserve an even four.)

Well, congrats !
I think one of the component who made great DH are the events and you made more strong this component. I like flavour events, in general.
Can i use a lot of your events in my mod, Fatherland ? With credits, obviously. Let me kwnon.
I'll need to release the thing first, of course, but sure! I don't mind in the least.

This is a great idea and I'm very excited to see where this mod goes...there can never be enough flavour events for DH so best of luck with this :D

Also, I thought of some suggestions for flavor events you need for the mod! If they weren't already included, I mean. I'll just include them behind a spoiler tag-

1989.09.27 - We Didn't Start the Fire (USA)

Ah, screw it. You knew already knew which ones I was gonna say. Especially seeing as you got most of them already.

the famicom (NES) was originally released on July 15,1983 in Japan.

Can others contribute as well? I could suggest maybe 5-10 events for Finland between 1945 and 1991.
Absolutely! I would love to hear your suggestions.

The date I chose was that of the full North American launch. I chose it specifically because of PaxAmericana's initial American focus. However, I'm open to suggestions for alternate dates; I'll consider having the Japanese side of that event be the Famicon's original launch.

the genesis came out in 1989 in the US/Japan, although on different dates.

Epic. I've a tentative list here, will post descriptions and effects later

1948.10.11 - Silvo Sokka and the Silverstar (a teenager claimed to have flown a rocket, causing a sensation in the media)
1964.05.26 - The death of Ruben Oskar Auervaara (a notorious romance con artist who targeted rich women)
1969.03.07 - The Pihtiputaa police murders (a drunk farmer shot four police officers to death)
1973.08.24 - Uuno Turhapuro (the first film in a series of twenty farcical films depicting the titular character)
1975.05.01 - Pirkkala handout (a small municipality had been running an experimental Marxist-Leninist curriculum for elementary schoolers)
1976.04.13 - The Lapua munitions plant explosion (40 dead, 60 wounded)
1978.10.01 - Finnair Flight 405 hijacking (a bankrupt building contractor took a Caravelle hostage and was eventually arrested)
1986.12.19 - Born American (an action film directed by Renny Harlin, was condemned as anti-Soviet and initially banned)
1989.12.14 - The sentencing of Veikko Siltavuori (convicted of murdering two young girls, attracted an exceptionally large amount of hate)

Are you going to include U.S. Hockey defeating CCCP in 1980 Winter Olympics? I'm old enough to remember that and it captivated the country so much that no one remembers us having to defeat Finland in the next game to win Gold....LOL The country was dealing with the Iran Hostage crisis at the time so the Winter Olympics were a nice distraction for everyone.

Edit: Also, and maybe because I'm older (50), but I feel like the Atari 2600 had a much greater impact on gaming than the NES or Genesis consoles. I mean, prior to its introduction, most homes that had a game console in the U.S., had one that only played Pong. Almost no one had an Odyssey or Fairchild, the 2 consoles that predate the Atari 2600 and were rendered has-beens almost as soon as Atari was released.

1986.12.19 - Born American (an action film directed by Renny Harlin, was condemned as anti-Soviet and initially banned)
1989.12.14 - The sentencing of Veikko Siltavuori (convicted of murdering two young girls, attracted an exceptionally large amount of hate)
These events pique my interest, to say the least, and I welcome description suggestions (makes my job easier, after all). Just know that I reserve the right to edit any descriptions for spelling/grammar or clarity, as needed.

The Miracle on Ice? Depending on how/whether I represent the Olympics, almost definitely. It's too good an opportunity to pass up.

I'll need to do some investigation, but I suspect I will include the Atari 2600. Later events are, however, somewhat lower priority than earlier ones.

Seems Interesting. The game can get quite dull, so more flavor always helps.
