As far as I can tell you are screwed. Part of the fun!

Although I did have my ships always seem to have 0 attrition when I take them over. I am not sure if this is a rule. I am going to start a new thread discussing PBEM rules...

that is not a rule... you are, indeed, screwed :)

on the other hand...when the AI plays your navies and explores have 0 attrition...and after all thats the major part of the game! :)

I would think, boehm, that the first time the month turns over after you resume play of your country, the fleet that a moment ago had no attrition is all of a sudden going to show the effects of say...50 months at sea. Bye bye explorer.

edit:clarity

ohhh I definately agree!! ...its just that in those 20years when the AI controlled him he will probably have explored 10 times more than u as a player ever could have done!....can u say "hello China!" in 1502 :D :p

On top of that, the only way they will have such high attrition is if they have been out for quite a while, such as the 20 years. So if you take over one year after the AI got the explorer (and they have not been able to take advantage yet), you should be able to get him to a port with minimal losses. For the most part, sometimes that solitary ship will get sunk anyways...
