Does anyone know of a way to play this game in a window? I've got a large LCD monitor and the game looks terrible when stretched to fullscreen :(

How big is your monitor? It fits fine on my 19" one...do you have your resolution set properly?

Some LCD monitors have a native resoution that is different from the game 1024x768.

On some monitors it has been reported that this gives less than great graphics when the monitor attempts to display image.

You should ask in the modding forum, I beleive there is a window hack around, but there is nothing official.

There's a patch here that will allow you to play in windowed mode.

To be clear that is in NO way a patch.
That is a hack and is not supported.

I have to say though that it's ridiculous that Paradox have not addressed this issue. I have a 20.1" Widescreen monitor and 1024x768 looks awful on a monitor whose native resolution is 1680x1050.

When will Paradox officially fix this? It's not hard!

There will be no fix, when we proposed a solution people did not want it, so it was abandoned. This problem apears to only affect very few people and only on certain combinations of hardware/software.

Well, no one asked me! Really, how the heck do you expect us to be able to play at work?

This would be a great addition to an otherwise addictive game. No reason *not* to include it. IMO, it was a mistake not to include it. Just from the stand point of switching back and forth from the game to a browser so a learning player could look at doco...

There are not unlimited resources to apply to patching, and those changes would require all new art work, that just won't happen at this point for HOI2.

The new Paradox engine is fully 3D so these issues will not be present in full games currently under development. this does not include add-ons to existing engine games ofcourse.

Well, then. How about a button to minimize the game to the task bar? I can do the same thing now, the hard way (using another program that minimizes the game to display a warning message), but it is very clunky not really good to do repeatedly.

How tough can that be?

There is a user made hack that allows you to play in a window if that is what you are talking about. Check the Modification/Editing forum for stuff like that.

That is a disappointing reply. How do you know it only affects a very few people? I don't want to have to rely on an unofficial hack to play in a windowed mode. That would require very little resources for Paradox to officially supoort and include in a future patch.

This is 2006 not 1998. This silly, myopic viewpoint has put me off buying Galactic Civilisations 2 and will definately put me off any of their products in the future.

Nothing like consistency... First you say

Now it seems you are saying, go use the hack.

Actually, what I was trying to get at in my orginal post, is that I want to *use* my computer a *tool*, not just as a game console. There are many reasons to want to temporarily get out of game, without shutting it down and having to fire it back up. Shutting this game down, and starting it up is a very clunky process. Hello! As the poster before mentioned, this is 2006! Maybe I want to check my email real quick? Maybe I want to Aim someone? Maybe I want to check the news?

I really don't understand how programmers could be so out of touch with reality here. If I wanted a game console, I'd buy one. I expect responses to be consistent, and I would expect a game made nowdays to have the option to minimize on the task bar, if you can't make it run in a window. And, yes, I want it to be supported! Is this really that much to ask?

Alt tabbing is not support nor is running other programs at the sam time as the game.

I am not being inconsistant.

I offered you a solution while at the same time warning you that it is not made by Paradox. So I leave the use of it up to you. If you would prefer I keep it secret and not tell you about that option available to you , well I will take that under advisement but I think most people would want to know all their options.

Well Gal Civ is not even a Paradox Game, Paradox only is the publisher, so there is no coding of Gal Civ by Paradox, so that is a strange reason to boycot that game.
And As mentioned the new Paradox engine is 3D so the resolution issue is no longer present to this extent.

But if you want to boycot all future Paradox games over a an issue that most games of this type have still today, well I am sorry you feel that way, but I doubt there is much I could do to change your mind.

I couldn't find such a hack in that forum for v1.3a, and it seems these forums lack a search function, which makes finding anything in the hundreds of pages and thousands of threads impossible.

Do not know anything about this or other user mods sorry, you would have to contact the author for any updated.
