Running a 900 hz 256 ram ...win98 directx 9 (just updated tonight).

The game runs fine..every thing is perfect no CTD

editor will not load..."failure to initiate direct draw"

Tells me to switch to 16 color display ....?

When you do it tells you it needs 256 color display...when you do it still gives you the ..."failure to initiate direct draw"


Got this message with directx 8.1 and now still with directx9.

Voodoo video card ....3dfx running vmm32.vxd driver

Not heard of this one.

Use the 16bit colour.
Try different resolutions.
Set your font size to small, or adjust it.

Do you run some tweakpack to increase the refresh rate of the monitor?

Try switching the refresh rate to lower values. I had the exact same problem a couple of minutes ago (trying to figure out why my savegame won't load).. and I know a bloke on RTW had the same problem when using RAGEtweak.

Now I'm not sure what worked...but your advise made me go back in and mess around with the settings.

The error message said try "16 color"...which I did to no avail...

Actually the error message should read "16 BIT color".

Changed to that....works great.

{16 bit color!!!!... until now I didn't know it existed having always ran this thing in 32 bit or 256 color for the odd program and 16 color is the same as black and white}

{PS works fine in 1024 x 768 as it auto switches to required resolution. }

and... (I know there is a refresh rate program on my system somewhere but couldn't find it tonite)....(have 150 gigs of HD so I lose things a lot...thats right ...150 gig...2 - 75G HD's loaded to the max.)

I kind of suspected, thats why I made sure to write 16bit.
