So this is a problem that has been recurrent for quite a number of patches ( >2 years at least), where the AI decides to colonize (without restrictions such as already colonized colonial regions) colonial regions and traade notes that are not optimal when it comes to bringing trade back. The best example of this is castille establishing it's first colonies in the thirteen colonies trade node (which is really stupid since it cannot bring any trade back to sevilla) and england going into brazil and mexico before colonizing either the ivory coast or the caraibes and the thirteen colonies (which would be the prerequisites to be able to bring back trade to the channel.

Here are a few screenshots of such a situation (I didn't play the colonial game as france in this game and portugal got swallowed by spain early so castille and england had the whole new world to themselves).

It would be great if the AI actually checked if it could bring trade back from a specific region before colonizing it, spanish eastern america really hurt the eyes. I can also understand the fact that they start to colonize florida since it is in the carribbean trade node but then maybe make the region less of a priority if it doesn't have a lot of provinces in the node, or make it so the AI avoids colonizing further into the region where it would become counterproductive.

Thanks for telling me. I will keep this in mind for when I work on the colonization AI next time.
