I'm guessing that the events that can be triggered by what you have researched so far is a way to slow down a mad rush up the tech tree.
So you wouldn't be able to research airplanes in 1850 if you only concentrated on the relevent technologies. There might be an event that would trigger no sooner than say 1890 that would open up the airplanes research branch of the tech tree if you have researced the prerequisites.
