I believe it is supposed to represent your influence as a Papal Controller in appointing replacements for bishops that die. It's rather pain usually.

Not historical and not stricktly a bug either. Those represent bishops appointed by the Pope and people controlling the Pope, the bad part is fully separating people with clerical careers wasn't implemented. So we'll propably just have to live with this.

Is the pope the only one who can appoint bishops without checking for marraige status or eccesiatical education? how about the rest of the AI's?

Edit 1: Can they make a change that limits the choice to just my Diocese Bishop? I don't mind losing the men, but the married men take my grandkids with them.

I might remember wrong, but I doubt there are no limits for marriage status, but there is about ecclestial education.

Doubtfull as the bishops have to come from somewhere instead the old one stays as an undead bishop forever.

It wasnt THAT unusual for married men to be Bishops, Arch or otherwise, in the period or even later (see the Medicis) Ecclesiastical celibacy was honored more in the breach than the observance for a LONG time, and in the CK era was really just firming up as an idea.

If a married man is appointed as bishop can the marriage be annulled and the wife left with maybe a small amount of gold? Maybe the kids even becoming bastards?

That would actually be sort of cool. You should post more elaborate ideas in the public beta forum, perhaps you can convince the folks there.
