population loss

I wonder what determines "population loss" after taking province, when I was playing PL noticed that Turkey, and Khanates conquests almost always trigger this and waging war with Russia left my provinces (and theirs) untouched, other nations seem to have no such "preferences", well anybody have some observations on this topic?

I believed it was only related to the battles, sieges, passing armies, "burning" provinces, etc...

yes randomness, but not only, as i said, there are some differences in probability of killing inhabitants, and the only one observed by me was which nation took the province ( not really , it will be enough if there were some Turkey troops to do the slaugter)
