Has anyone noticed any differences in the portal worlds? By the time I was ready to tackle a portal world, there would be such a monster buildup waiting for me that I just stopped trying to explore them. I believe, with the latest patch, they don't start spawning until someone actually enters the world. How have your experiences been so far?

What I see happen half of the time is that the guardian elemental gets revealed while I am exploring. My scouts drive him off but don't kill him completely. The elemental then retreats through the portal thereby cracking the seal. At that point, that particular world starts to spawn mobs and the start making raids through the portal.

If you kill the guardian instead of allowing him to escape, the seal is still intact and the raids do not come. Presumably, according to the patch notes, the mobs are not yet spawning in this world.

I have seen others report, though I cannot confirm it, that wandering mobs will sometimes crack the seal on a portal also. If that is true, then the best thing to do is make sure you kill the original guardian and then plant one of your units right on top of the portal to prevent strays from going through it.

There is a pretty big difference now. Portal worlds will not start spawning units until something enters them.

However, this seems to apply to ANYTHING entering them. AI units, monsters... even the Earth Elementals set to guard them. If you are clearing an EE from a portal location, make sure he cannot run back through the portal, or it will set the monsters to start spawning in them.

Portals you find later on in a game are very likely to have been entered by some entity or another, and are still fairly likely to be populated densely.
