I am playing my first EEP game ever, and I have to say that it really is much better than the regular 1.7 version (Anibal was right :) ). It has much more events, which bring more fun to the campaign.

Now the things that I don't like:

1) Portugal has way too many explorers; by 1470 I was exploring the Magellan Straight and I already had a colony in Mahe (Indian Ocean). I am the absolute coloniser (I am currently in 1500 I already colonised 90% of North America, all the Caribbean islands, I have trade posts or colonies in half of south America, I colonised the the African coast all the way to Fernão do Pó and I already have colonies in the Indian ocean and in Eastern Africa). As a result, I made sure that I had harbours very close to unexplored sea squares - which may partly be responsible for my unbelievable advance in the naval explorations.

I think that the explorers should be given shorter lifes (particularly the less important ones).

2) I chose to own the Canaries (in one of those events). As a result, Castille declared war on me 3 times. I ended up conquering them and annexing them by 1470 (Aragon is my faithful ally - and now a vassal). All this because of the way Castille wages a war (they won't attack the armies, they will start and abandon sieges randomly)

3) Camões is still "born" in 1497. At that date the REAL Camões man wasn't even alive. He was born around 1510 (I can get the actual date of birth if someone wants), and he was active from 1530 to the late 1560s (he died in 1581, I think). I don't even know why Camões is considered a conquistador (maybe due to his short stay in North Africa?), but if he is to remain one, then he should "live" from around 1530 to 1540 (?).

One thing I do like, is that Portugal receives lots of ships: being forced to maintain an expensive fleet, or to destroy it (I chose to maintain in and lower the cost by building lots of colonies). I was forced to ask for 3 loans so far, and I still wasn't able to save enough money to build a manufactory (most of my money goes to keeping around 60.000 men and in building lots of colonies).

By the way, how does one save pictures of the game to the hardrive? I would really like to post some, my empire is quite impressive (at least so far).

I haven't conquered India yet, but I like the idea that the Indian coast is already owned by a nation (instead of being native uncolonised territory).

So far, my congratulations to the people that made this patch. It is definitely better than the original.

Just an idea: Portugal should get an event about the expulsion of the Jews. Maybe we could lose money and naval research (Jews were great administrators and many were great scholars), and gain stability or something.

Camões should never be considered a "conquistador", of course!
There is a flavour event already in the game that briefly tells the life of the Portuguese poet, maybe increasing a bit the bonus this event gives to Portugal while taking away Camões as an explorer is a good compromise?

Thanks for he input Nun'Alvares, it helps a lot that people tell us what they think. Glad you like it!:D

In the next version 12 years of explorer-lifetime have been removed. Hopefully this will help a bit.

Not sure this is a EEP problem, but it might be that the AI file we use isn't very persistant in sieging. Anyone knows?

You and Ubik knows this person better than I do :) Seems he shouldn't be a conquistador in the first place, I also think Portugal has enough of them. Removing him won't really do any harm.

Sounds like a great idea.

Well, if Camões is removed as a conquistador, he should appear in an event, at least, about "Os Lusíadas", since it's the most important Portuguese book ever.

Maybe raising stability a bit, improving naval tech (the book is about Vasco da Gama's journey, written in an epic form similar to the Aeneid) and, perhaps (but this is more far-fetched) giving shields in some African provinces.

Is there any ground for having him as a conquistador? Would the event you suggested be better than having him as a conquistador? Anyone with the knowledge of them man interested in scripting the event? ;)

The real Camões was a poet - as simple as that. He was a nobleman that fell inlove with John III's daughter, and was sent to North Africa to avoid problems in the court (Camões was also involved in duels). He fought in North Africa and lost an eye. He later sailed to India and to Macao. He fought for the Portuguese in the Indian ocean, and ended up losing everything (except his masterpiece, "The Lusiads" which he saved by swimming with only one hand - and keeping the other above water level - after his ship sank off the China sea).

The best thing to do was to erase him as a conquistador, and make an event. Something like

"The greatest Portuguese poet of all times, Luiz Vaz de Camões, was born in 1524 - the same year as Vasco da Gama sailed to India to assume the appointment as Vice-Roy of the Indies. A defender of Christianity in North Africa, a penniless bohemian in Lisbon, a privateer in India, an administrator in Macao, and a castaway in the China seas, Camões' life embodied the golden century of the Portuguese Empire. His poem "The Lusiads", is a unique tribute to the epic voyage of Vasco da Gama and to the History of Portugal herself. Camões eventually made the journey back to Lisbon in 1567. In 1570, he read his masterpiece to the young king Sebastian himself, eventually seeing his work published in 1572."

I think the event should be something like
a) let him read the poem to the king, and publish Camões' poem (pay $$$ and get an art manufactory in Lisbon for half the price???)

b) let him read the poem to the king, and give him a pension (pay $, get +1 quality, +1 narrowmindedness, +2 settlers, +1 missionary)

c) send him away and save the money (player gets $$)

Instead of Camões, Portugal should have the conquistador Fernão Mendes Pinto. He was much more of a conquistador (Portuguese-style, that is).

Possibly the AI cavalry-siege bug rearing its ugly head.

Hummm... as I told earlier, there is already an event made by me in the last version of the EEP regarding Camões and the Lusiadas.
It was posted in the cultural events thread, followed the spirit of that thread regarding bonus given and included in the last EEP. If you want, I can post it here again...

Isn't your event already in the EEP?

Sorry... I didn't know about that.

Anyway, I was bored of playing with Portugal, and I started a new game with Tuscany (by 1540 I already unified Italy, with the exception for Venice), which is why I haven't seen that Camões event yet. I'll have to wait for a future occasion :).
