Playing as Spain in a two-human player Grand Campaign, I was informed that I had taken out eight -- count them -- eight loans in the first four years of the game, although I did not choose to take out a single one on my own. Inasmuch as five loans is the alleged limit, and I would have been hit with a crushing penalty had I spent this money (of course I did!), I am assuming this is some sort of a bug.
This game will be continued (multiplayer, but I got dumped one time too many and gave up), so we will see what happens by 1497.
I really like the game, but the crash and text bugs (i.e., you get 'unknown command' when you attempt to send a message to your opponent, as well as seeing the left-hand upper quarter of the screen in perpetual shadow -- some of which I attribute to DirectX problems -- are real pain in the neck.
While I'm complaining, why cannot you turn off that horrible music once you are in the game? Apparently, all game options are locked once the game begins, which means you either listen to the music till you go mad (estimated time for this -- 3 minutes and 12 seconds) or you reboot.
Few problems in solo, at least.
