I have been having repeated CTD problems with save games that have reached beyond about 1100, much as it seems many people have.

Tonight, I decided to follow MrT's advice and use ctrl-alt-del to shut down non-essential programs in turn. I was surprised to find CK first continue to crash within a month of loading, unchanged after quite a lot of memory had been freed up, and then suddenly improve. I played 5 hours non-stop after that, finally getting a CTD in about 1140 or so

What did I do? Well, I clicked "end task" on the file "loadqm.exe". When I googled for this file, I found that it is installed by either MSN or Internet Explorer to permanently sit in memory ask you if you want to use Internet Explorer as your default web browser. Quite why this small piece of software should cause so many CTDs in Crusader Kings, I don't know.

Well I dont have that file running in any of the process and it still crashed :p and I got 1 gig of Memory not to mentio the top processor and video card you can get etc etc etc lol, quite redicules really why thier is a problem with the savegame CTD's and so on.

Yes, I have that too. And no, I don't for a minute think this is the cause of absolutely all the CTD bugs in CK.

To help solve the problem, my systems specs are as follows:

Athlon 2600+
1 GB RAM
Gigabyte 9600 PRO graphics card
Win 98 SE

To clarify, the CTDs I was seeing occurred anywhere within a game month or so of setting the game running once I'd loaded it. They do not relate to CTDs occurring while saving or autosaving.

Findfast is also a program in your taskmanager, that could cause CTD's.

Jos, was that aimed at me, or a more general comment on a program that is generally known to be a common cause of CTDs?

CTD's in play are not the real problem. Inability to reload a working save after a CTD is.

I disagree; Until I solved this problem CK was unplayable. I didn't post this in the "combined" CTD thread, because I don't claim it will solve the problem of CTDs on loading, which that thread seems to be mainly concerned with.

this is actaully more of support issue, but I will l log it as a bug as well, since maybe something can be done about it.

Well, welcome to the support forum gentleman.

I don't really know what I am supposed to do with this one as it apears to effect many people and could be bug related rather than hardware.
So I would ask that you do follow up in the bug forum as well, and I will see what I can do here as well.

This site has an excellent table of required processes for WinXP (i.e. a list of what TSR services must be running in order for XP to work). If you're having trouble then you can safely kill all aps not included on this table.

Well, you could sticky it... :)

It would be good to know if this turns out to be useful to others or not as well, and if so, seeing their system specs might help place the source of these particular CTDs as well.

Well I can take a guess, Do you use the VIA drivers?

What worries me more here, is the combination of Win 98 SE with 1 GB of RAM. Microsoft ifself has stated that this can cause problems, unless some specific alterations have been made to limit memory usage to 512 MB. The second 512 MB should not be used for anything other than the HDD cache function.

Well, it seems to work OKish. In any case, I found the solution while I only had 512 MB installed, but have since upgraded to 1GB and the problem persists.

Do a google search - or search microsoft data base. Using more than 512 MB RAM for Win 98 / 98SE can lead to all kind of problems.

Yes, thanks Derek.

I have already had someone point that out, but it hasn't yet.
