edit- let's start with, can you create an upgrade that enhances walk and/or run speed? I suspect having it be an activated item w/ growing percent chance to explode is well out of the question.

Yes, you can have a mod that can increase your speed, I believe you can simulate degrading performance. However, the biggest hurdle is that you can’t turn it off.
