I have an idea to expand the Offmap system from CK2 to not only include China, but also smaller states in Southeast Asia as well as Japan. The system for China and the minor states, of course will be different. This will reflect the actual Indian Ocean Trades. The offmap interface for minor states will display relation, prosperity, army strength, intelligence gained, and percentage of religions in each states.

I imagine possible interaction by sending an envoy like this:
• Send embassy: improve relations with a state, cost gold to maintain, result depend on envoy's diplomacy and intrigue.
• Organize Trade expedition: cost gold up front, chance to gain gold and artefacts, depend on envoy's stewardship and diplomacy.
• Military campaign: cost levy to raid the cities of Southeast Asia, chance to gain gold, artefact, and capture princesses, depend on commander's martial and intrigue.
• Spread religion: cost vast amount of gold, will gradually change the religion of a state, maximum three kingdom tier ruler or above of different religion can do this in each states, depend on envoy's learning and diplomacy. Will gain massive piety and prestige when successfully converted the monarch and more than 51% adherents.
• Build spy network, will gain intelligence on the state, depend on the spy's intrigue and stewardship (to bribe). Intelligence will be useful to raid or invade.

The envoy sent to build spy network and spread religion will stay until recalled or the rate reach 100% (chance for them to be imprisoned and executed). While the other will return after successful expedition, or escaping failure, or die.

And then with high enough relation, the player and AI can form alliance and royal marriage, which will increase value of trade route and increase money gain from direct trade expedition as well as speeding up conversion rate. With weak enough military and high intel, it will unlock option to invade the state to place their relative on the throne. You can spend intelligence and piety to sabotage other ruler's proselytizing too.

What do you think?

I'm almost certain that an actual map expansion to China (at least) will take place. I'm not looking forward to it (not totally against it either; it just won't matter much to me), but I'm pretty much expecting it.

Unfortunately, I think on-map China would be too much for just a DLC if it isn't part of CK3's original release.

The expansion to India was free content, rather than DLC, but the DLC let you play there. I wouldn't be surprised to see a map expansion to include China at some point in the future but the DLC to allow you to play Chinese rulers. Though I agree that it might be too much; after all, it's a HUGE area, and it sounds like the map has already expanded greatly in terms of the # of provinces/detail (I read something, I think on "Rock, Paper, Shotgun" that suggested it looked to be along the lines of Imperator.)

I hope we dont get more map expansion. It already sounds like too little butter spread over too much bread but we'll see. Off map power is a great concept anyways.

Continental East/South Asia excluding Chinese territory west of the Indian border is something like 10,000,000 Square KM with a significantly higher average population density than the Khorasan to Bengal region added in the ROI, so not exactly comparable. And CK3 is going to have about 3 times CK2's province amount compared to roughly 7,000 in IR's map.

Somehow this thread made me think about how some people asked to be able to turn India off in CK2 completely, instead of it taking processor time even if you don't own the DLC and don't care about the region. And it occurred to me that it's actually possible and technically quite simple: just make all those provinces uninhabitable wasteland if you don't own (or turned off) the DLC. I mean, maybe if they do it this way for China, it could satisfy both sides, those who want China and those who don't? Just a quick random thought.

Yeah but India in CK2 is extremely lacking in basically everything from government types to religions. It's just too shallow. RoI isn't an example of a good DLC or map extension.

To me it felt like content for the sake of adding content. Rather than anything interesting.

Let's expand the game and I suppose map because that's expected.

China is too large.

You'll either have it represented properly (i.e. Tang China geographically was the the same size as Europe) and trash performance or not fully represent it and upset people who are clamoring for it. Additionally, both Tang and Song are unified (mostly in Song's case), presenting a stable powerbloc* that would make Charlemagne's offspring hugbox look unimpressive. To put it simply...no one wants to see Han Constantinople, including the Venetian fan-club.

Offmap China is still a great compromise. Or better yet develop a new IP for China, as it certainly deserves it rather than be shunted into another game.

*Events like Huang Chao's rebellion can disrupt things but I, for one, hate railroaded events and I doubt I'm alone in that.

That’s another good reason.

I'd rather see all those things, but on map. I'd love to see a playable China, Southeast Asia, and Japan. I'd like to see embassies and trade with other states in the game. I think it would be fun and add replayability.
