Don't fear for any legal issues, as I've asked @Grand Historian beforehand. Regardless of the trademark, you've still clicked on this thread, so you know what you are getting into.

Pravda Vítězí - Truth Prevails - Veritas Vincit (Jan Hus):
In order to celebrate the 400th jubilee of the Third Defenestration of Prague (23th of May, 1618), I'm going to defenestrate @DDRJake , @Trin Tragula and the @Groogy ,
Prager.Fenstersturz.2018.jpg

How it really happaned - a painting by the Dutch artist @Martynios van Rijn

no, I'm rather going to defenestrate this thread. For a long time, I wanted to write something about another of my favourite countries. Behold 30 pages of text!

There are certain misconceptions about Utraquism, the number of defenestrations and how the Bohemian elective monarchy worked that I want to eleminate with this thread. Though, I deem Utraquism to be the most important part of this thread. As this is a very long thread, I'm going to divide it into two parts and start with a table of contents:
  • The Kingdom of Bohemia
    • Possible Map Changes, Provincial Modifiers and Trade Goods
    • DHEs and Missions for Bohemia
    • Second Hussite War Disaster
    • The Post-Hussite Interregnum, Jiří z Poděbrad and Ladislaus Postumus
    • Crown of Saint Wenceslaus - the Bohemian Elective Monarchy
  • Utraquism - the moderate Hussite State Church
    • A (not so) short Tractate about Utraquism before Luther
    • Mechanic for Utraquism
    • Events for Utraquism

Although, I fear that some will just read until the map changes and then complain about this or that region being underrepresented, I'm going to start with the map changes based on the Bohemian Circles, because I'm going to refer to them in the parts that follow. Thereafter, I'm going to propose around two dozens of new events for Bohemia as well as a full mission tree. Finally, the Second Hussite War disaster and the Bohemian elective monarchy is going to be dealt with.

The second part of this thread is going to start with a (not so) short tractate about Utraquism before Luther to argue that Utraquism would be a logical consequence after Anglicanism was introduced. A mechanic as well as events are going to follow this.

1.) The Kingdom of Bohemia
Before we get started with the big things, let's talk about the last Bohemian NI called Czech Nationalism. I would cut down the HCC to +25%, but let it increase army morale by 5%, too. In fact, Bohemia was far easier to integrate for the Habsburgs than Hungary was, as the latter caused far bigger problems. Also, 50% HCC is way too much, causing unnecessary toxity.

1.1) Possible Map Changes, Provincial Modifiers and Trade Goods
Something bothering me for a long time, is that, seemingly, the provincial borders of Bohemia are based off the modern ones (Moravia being much smaller than it should, Kladsko/Glatz being part of Silesia, ...). First of all, I want to talk about the historical divisions of Bohemia proper and Moravia before proposing my map changes. Let's start with a map showing the divisions (circles) between the 14th century and 1742. Note that, the exact borders were subject to change as well as the number of circles.
Zem%C4%9B_Koruny_%C4%8Desk%C3%A9.jpg

First of all, a list of the Bohemian circles and their time evolution:
  1. Bechinsko: ca. 1350-1751, Budejovicko 1751-1850
  2. Berounsko: 1714-1850 together with Podbrdsko and Moldavsko
  3. Boleslavsko: ca. 1350-1850
  4. Cáslavsko: ca. 1350-1850
  5. Chrudimsko: ca. 1350-1850
  6. Hradecko: ca. 1350-1850, togethet with Kladské Hrabstvá(Grafschaft Glatz) until 1742
  7. Kourimsko: ca. 1350-1850
  8. Litomericko: ca. 1350-1850
  9. Loketsko: ca. 1350-1850
  10. Moldavsko: ca. 1450-1714, administered together with Berounsko 1714-1751
  11. Pisecko: ca. 1350- ca. 1450
  12. Plzensko: ca. 1350-1850
  13. Podbrdsko: ca. 1450-1714, administered together with Berounsko 1714-1751
  14. Práchensko: ca. 1350-1850
  15. Rakovnicko: ca. 1350-1850
  16. Slansko: ca. 1350-1714, administered together with Rakovnicko 1714-1751
  17. Taborsko: 1751-1850
  18. Zatecko: ca. 1350-1850
And another list for the Moravian circles:
  1. Brnensko: at least 1529-1850
  2. Hradistsko: at least 1529-1850
  3. Jihlavsko: 1569-1850
  4. Jicinsko: at least 1529-1569
  5. Olomoucko: at least 1529-1850
  6. Prerovsko: 1714-1850
  7. Znojemsko: at least 1529-1850

My proposal looks like this:
eu4_65.png

Trade Goods:
ressource.png

Bohemia:
  1. Prague: Cloth 8/8/5 = 21
  2. Budejovice (Bechyn): Fish 4/3/3 = 10
  3. Plzen: Livestock 5/4/3 = 12
  4. Eger/Cheb: Iron 3/2/1 = 6
  5. Zatec: Gold (Silver) 2/4/1 = 7
  6. Litomerice: Glass 2/3/1 = 6
  7. Prachen (Prachatice): Grain, +5 local trade power (Golden Steig), 2/2/1 = 5
  8. Boleslavsko(Mladá Boleslav): Gems 3/2/2 = 7
  9. Hradecko(Hradec Kralove): Grain 4/3/2 = 9
  10. Cáslav (Kutná Hora): Gold (Silver) 3/3/1 = 7
Here, I united the five central Circles into a single one, Praha, I united Cáslav with Chrudim into Cáslav, I united Hradecko with Kladsko and I united Eger/Cheb with Loket. I would also like to mention that Hradecko and Boleslavsko are special as I've used the regional name for them (the city name consists out of two parts). Out of consistency, it might be better to name them after the region and not after the capital/city.

With this setup the trade goods have severly changed compared to now. At the moment Bohemia is mainly producing grain which wasn't really true, e.g. Boleslavsko now produces gems to represent its goldsmithery that only increased its importance over the course of the years.
The Ore Mountains now again have an iron producing province. I've put the gold mine into the central province as there were several silver mines there. Although, the famous silver mine of Joachimstal/Jáchymov would lie in my Eger province (though, only because of a few kilometres), this has become necessary, because I want to show Eger's unique position within the Bohemian kingdom through a provincial modifier. There are more of those:
  • Imperial Mortgage Eger: -10% local tax modifier, +0.1 monthly aunotomy change, starts with 50 autnomy
  • Lusatian Self-Administration: +0.1 monthly autonomy change, starts with 50 autonomy
  • Dominium Rosenbergicum (Bechyn): +0.1 monthly autonomy change, starts with 50 autonomy
These can be removed by a few related events (see below). At game start, this would lead to a nerf, so that I increased Bohemia's dev by about 11.
The two silver mines in Kutná Hora (in which the mining activity again increased when the Jagiellons came to power, after the mining was halted during the Hussite Wars) and Zatec might deplete when Bohemia's inflation reaches a critical level. Historically, this happened in the second half of the 16th century.

Moravia:
  1. Brno: Wine 5/4/3 = 12
  2. Olomouc: Grain 3/3/2 = 8
  3. Znojmo: Wine, 1/2/1 = 4
  4. Hradiste: Livestock(so called Kuhländchen/Kravarsko), Fort 1/2/1 = 4
Here, I went with uniting four circles into two. Znojmo is now an additional wine producing province to better represent this (famous) wine-growing area. I would also propose to add a fort to Hradiste, as Corvinus wasn't able to siege it down: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/92/UherskeHradisteMedievalTimesModel.jpg

Silesia: One new province called Opolí, as this was one of the larger Silesian duchies. Liegnitz no longer contains the County Glatz/Kladsko, as this was only after Frederick the Great conquered Prussian Silesia in 1742. For most of the time, Glatz was a part of Bohemia proper, so I don't see a reason to just accommodate to possible future borders.

Cultural Setup:
At game start, the country still was ravaged by the Hussite Wars, which saw the expulsion of many Germans, as they mostly were Catholic (there were Hussite Germans, though, but they weren't the majority). Just before the Hussite Wars, nearly 90% of the Praguean universitarians left Prague, because of the Decrees of Kutná Hora.
Therefore, there was quite certainly no German majority in any Bohemian province at game start. Those German majorities everyone seems to think of, came to be after the Habsburgs started their nearly 400 years lasting rule and the Re-Catholisation after/during the 30 Years' War.
There was only one city and a region with a German majority at game start, namely the Imperial City of Eger which was mortgaged to the Bohemian kings in the 14th century. Even though, the Eger province I've drawn also contains Loket, a German majority for this province seems plausible, as the percentage of Germans was higher at the border territory even after the Hussite Wars. Thereby, Eger would have a Bavarian culture, because their accent as well as culture is/was closely related to the Upper Palatinate. Yet, representing this with the normal Bohemian culture wouldn't be that far off, so I leave this up to the devs.
As fantasy cultures like Belgian are out of question for Eu IV, I won't take even one more minute to talk about a "Moravian culture".

New (Releasable) Tags:
  • The Imperial City of Eger: It retained a certain autonomy for the first two centuries of the game, and it would actually have been possible that the mortgage would get ended.
    Cheb_coat_of_arms.svg
  • Lusatia: Was a margraviate that was able to administer it self, because of its inconvenient position. I propose to use the CoA of Lower Lusatia, as this is Lusatia "proper". Upper Lusatia was first called like this by Corvinus.

Related Events:
Imperial Mortgage Eger
When emperor Louis the Bavarian mortgaged the Egerland to the Bohemian king,
John of Luxemburg, Eger retained the privileges of an imperial city as well as
wasn't and shouldn't become a part of the Bohemian crownlands. However, over
the course of the years, the Bohemian kings reduced Eger's autonomy step by
step, while denying them some privileges of Bohemia proper. Now that we've completely
abolished their autonomy, the Egerland shall become a proper part of the
Bohemian crownlands.
  • Eger has 0 autonomy or Bohemia has 20% absolutism
  • remove Imperial Mortgage province modier(-10% local tax modier, +0.05 monthly autonomy)
Lusatian Self-Administration
Although Lusatia was incorporated into the Bohemian crownlands in 1367, the
Bohemian kings's influence was weak, so that Lusatia mostly administered itself.
Over the years we've been able to reduce their autonomy and we cut back their
privileges, leading to the end of their autonomy.
  • Lusatia has 0 autonomy or Bohemia has 20% absolutism
  • remove Lusation Self-Administration modier(+0.1 monthly autonomy)
End of the Rosenbergs
For several decades, the of Rosenbergs were the most influential noble family within
the Kingdom of Bohemia. Because of their vast territorial possessions, the
Dominium Rosenbergicum rigthfuly could be described as a kingdom within a
kingdom. Now with the death of the last male family member, we can distribute
their possesions and take care that no noble family becomes as powerful as the
Rosenbergs again.
  • MTTH: 150 years
  • Bechyn(Budejovice) loses the Dominium Rosenbergicum modier
The Golden Steig
The Golden Steig is the most important trade route between the Alpine salt mines
and Bohemia. The route starts in Passau, where the salt is transported to on the
Danube, and leads to Prachatice. However, this is no longer conform with our
mercantilist policy(note: age of absolutism/revolutions)/policy to foster our own salt
production(note: owns a province producing salt). If we were to implement a toll on this
foreign salt, our own economy would certainly profit from it. What shall we do?
  • Bohemia owns at least one salt province OR age of absolutism/revolutions
  • Foster own Trade: Prachen loses Goldener Steig modier, gain 3 mercantilism
  • Free Trade: lose 3 mercantilism
Decay of Silver Mining
The mining of silver has been a lucrative income for the Bohemian kings during
the last decades. However, the costs to mine have increased greatly, because of a
galloping inflation and the easier accessible silver veins being depleted. This rapid
decay is going to open up holes in our state coffers.
  • Not the age of discovery
  • Bohemia's inflation is at least 5
  • We have to look for another source of income: Gold mine in Zatec is depleted, trade good in Cáslav changes to livestock, capital of Cáslav changes to Cáslav

1.2.)DHEs and Missions for Bohemia
DHEs:
I wrote events about the Second Defenestration of Prague which cause the Religious Peace of Kutná Hora. Since the effects of both were only local for Bohemia, they aren't that well known. This lead to the Third Defenestration of Prague (1618) often being counted as the second one. Note that the Religious Peace of Kutná Hora was even more far reaching than the Religious Peace of Augsburg (not only cuius regio, eius religio, but everone could decide himself).
There's also an event about Cyril and Methodius which have festivities taking place every year until today. Note that the day the Apostles of the Slavs are celebrated changed in the 19th century. Furthermore, there is an event for Catholics to establish the Clementinum (founded by Ferdinand I to counteract against the University of Prague) as well as the possibility to revoke the Decrees of Kutná Hora, as these were introduced to fight Catholic Germans. The other events should be self explanatory.

The Second Defenestration of Prague
The clear preference our monarch has to Catholics has made the Utraquist majority of our country uncontent. Fearing for their influence and religious rights, an overthrow happened in Prague. There, the mayor of the Old Town of Prague was defenestrated but survived, while it also came to revolts in the Lesser Town of Prague. In contrast to this, the situation in the New Town of Prague was more bloody as seven dead bodies of councillors were defenestrated. Thereafter, it came to riots against the local Jews as well as the remaining monasteries. The Vysehrad and Prague Castle then were occupied two days later, too. The situation worsened when the former counsillors admitted to have intrigued to strike against the Utraquist majority and exile their clergy. This whole series of events is called Second Defenestration of Prague in rememberance of the First one which started the Hussite Wars in 1419.
  • Age of Discovery or Reformation
  • Bohemia is Utraquist
  • Bohemia's current ruler is Catholic
  • MTTH: 20 years
  • Oh no, not again: Prague is sieged by peasant rebels, lose 1 stability
The Religious Peace of Kutná Hora
<current ruler name>, has accepted that ruling against the majority religion and rather fostering a minority religion will inevitably lead to a counter reaction. The Second Defenestration of Prague has just shown that dictating a Bohemian what he or she should believe is an impossibile endeavour after the Hussite Reformation. Nevertheless, a settlement with the predominantly Catholic higher nobility is necessary, too. Therefore, a religious peace was signed by King <current ruler name> in the city Kutná Hora, guaranteeing everyone from a mere peasant to a nobleman the free right to choose between Catholicism or Utraquism.
  • Second Defenestration of Prague has happened
  • No province is controlled by rebels and there are no rebels
  • Bene: Negative religious tolerance no longer gives any penalties until the religion is changed, religious heterodoxy gain is reduced by 25\% until the end of the campaign, lose 25 prestige

Cyril and Methodius
On the 9th of March, we ever since celebrate the Apostles of the Slavs, Cyril and Methodius, who have spread Christianity into Bohemia and the rest of Greater Moravia. They also introduced the oldest Slavic alphabet, the Glagolitic script. This day is celebrated with processions and holy masses, with the festivities being bigger in Moravia.
  • Date is the 9th of March
  • Country is Moravia or Bohemia
  • Country is Catholic
  • MTTH: 20 days
  • MTTH modifier x0.5: Is Moravia
  • No expenses shall be spared on this great day!: lose 0.5 years of income, gain 1 TotF for 10 years, gain 5 papal influence
  • Our love in Christ is not measured in gold spent.: Celebrate Cyril and Methodius as usual
Decorate the Charles Bridge
Since its construction beginning in 1357, the Stone Bridge of Prague, later known as Charles Bridge, was the most important reason for Prague becoming a significant centre of trade. Now, almost 350 years after its erection, it would show our uninterrupted remarkableness and splendour if we were to decorate this bridge with statues in the modern Baroque style. What shall we do?
  • Year is at least 1700
  • Bohemia owns Prague
  • Decorate it: lose 0.25 years of income, gain 20 prestige, gain +20 trade power in the Bohemia trade node for 20 years.
  • Too expensive: lose 5 prestige
The Goldmakers of Rudolf II
Rudolf II of Habsburg, Archduke of Austria and King of Bohemia and Hungary, was the last emperor to reside in Prague, where he fostered the arts, science and alchemy. In Prague, he founded an own alchemy laboratory in which various alchemists worked to find the ever-elusive method for transmuting various minerals into gold. He suffered numerous betrayals amongst the ranks of his staff over the years, eventually enough to make Rudolf II suspicious to the point of incarcerating his alchemists. After his death, it was said that his ghost still roamed the streets of Prague in search of gold. What shall we do?
  • year is between 1576 and 1612
  • owns Prague
  • Pay the alchemists to find a way!: lose 1 years of income
    • 65% chance: worthless plunder - lose 5 prestige
    • 30% chance: fertiliser discovered - your own grain producing provinces get +1 base tax(higher population) and +2 base production
    • 5% chance: Transmutation to gold discovered - Prague gets +10 income for the rest of the campaign
  • Humbug: gain 5 papal influence, 25 church power or 5 fervour, lose 20 religious heterodoxy
The Golem of Prague
A priest has raised Prague's citizens against Prague's Jews by accusing them of sacrificin Catholic children in their rituals. The Jews asked us to help them as is our duty, but we might get between the front lines. According to popular belief, there's a Rabbi called Loew who achieved creating a golem. The golem is awakened by inserting a piece of paper with the name of God written onto it. This golem, equipped with an amulet to make it invisible, is believed to patrol Prague's streets and hinder anyone who wants to carry a dead children into the Jewish ghetto. However, such a monstrosity could go into a rampage and devastate our beloved capital. What shall we do?
  • Year is between 1580 and 1609
  • Protect the Jewish Population of Prague!: +5 national unrest in Prague
  • They are on their own: 75% chance of -20% local tax modifier for Prague, 25% chance of the "Golem" devastating Prague (+5 devastation for Prague)
Clementinum (Catholic)
Because of those disgraceful Bohemian heretics, the higher learning of Prague has completely declined and is no longer in a functioning state. If we were to invite the Jesuits to Prague, allowing them to found a place of wisdom and learning, we would be able to again recruit competent advisors from our land. There's an empty monastery, close to the church of St Clement, we can assign to them, while we still would need to support them financially in the beginning.
  • Has the Counter-Reformation
  • Ad maiorem Dei gloriam: lose, 0.25 years of income, Prague gets +1 possibile advisors and -10% advisor cost for the rest of the campaign, Bohemia gets -1 tolerane of heretics for 25 years
Revoke the Decree of Kutná Hora (Utraquism)
When King Wenceslaus IV enacted the Decree of Kutná Hora, nearly all German professors and students left Prague reducing the size of the Charles University by around 90\%. The reason for their departure was the controversy around Jan Hus as well as that the Czechs now also had three votes compared to the one vote they had before. After this event, the Charles University decayed and didn't recover for over a century. As the truth is winning in the German lands, too, this one conflict line between Czech and German universitarians is no longer a problem. If we revoked the Decree of Kutná Hora, the Charles Universitie's glory, it once had during the lifetime of its great founder, Emperor Charles IV, would certainly be restored. What shall we do?
  • Age of Reformation
  • At least three German nations being Protestant
  • Owns Prague and Prague is of the state religion
  • Revoke them: +5 national unrest in Prague, -5% idea cost and +1 possible advisors for Pague for the rest of the campaign
  • Maintain them: -10% cost of advisors of Czech culture
Renewed Land Constitution
A new idea, the absolutism, is sweeping through Europe. Bohemia has been always dominated by a strong nobility, sometimes causing conflicts between the monarch and his nobles. While we were able to reduce the privileges of the nobility step by step, completely abolishing them will certainly ensure less troubles securing our succession and more power for us for once and for all. What shall we do?
  • Age of Absolutism or of Revolutions
  • Is a Monarchy of St Wenceslaus
  • Absolutism at least 50
  • The king shall rule supreme: lose 2 stability, changes to despotic monarchy
  • Cooperate with the Nobles: gain 1 stability, gain 25 legitimacy

Plague in Moravia (1713-1715)
A region like Moravia that lies at the crossroads between Bohemia proper, Silesia, Hungary and Austria will always be prone to epidemics. The plague outbreak of <current year> however is quite extraordinary, since a big part of the Moravina population already died or is dying. The citizens of Olomouc pledged to build a Mercy Column for fame and glory to the Allmighty God, when the city finally is free of this pestilence.
  • Year is between 1700 and 1720
  • Owns at least one province in the Moravian region
  • Horrible: lose 1 stability, Moravian region gets -50% manpower, -50% goods produced,-50% local tax modifier and -3 national unrest for 2 years
  • After the plague is over, the "Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc" event fires

Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc
As Olomouc is no longer plagued by this pestilence, the time has come for the citizens of Olomouc to fulfil their pledge. They plan to build a Mercy Column consecrated to the Holy Trinity, consisting out of three tiers decorated with statues for the apostles, the theological virtues as well as several saints among which John of Nepomuk, Saint Wenceslaus, Cyril and Methodius can be found. The column shall be crowned by a golden depiction of the Holy Trinity. Others however feel that the only proper way to mourn the dead is a more restrained, conservative column without pretentions about too much worldly splendour.
  • Triggered only
  • Let us build a grand Column: 30 prestige, 15 legitimacy
  • Let us be conservative: +1 stability
Unworthy wearer of the Crown of Saint Wenceslaus
According to a popular legend, every unworthy wearer of the Crown of Saint Wenceslaus would die soon. Many saw <current ruler name> as unworthy, and, now after his death, our people whisper that the legend is truly right.
  • current ruler has lower legitimacy than 10 OR ruler skills weaker than 1/1/1
  • MTTH: 120 months
  • May God have pity on his soul: current ruler dies, lose 1 stability
Schwarzenberg Canal
A local nobleman of the Schwarzenberg dynasty has ask us to grant him a privilege for building a canal for wood transportation. This alluvial canal would connect the Bohemian Forest with the river called Große Mühl, thus creating a connection to Vienna, where the wood can be sold most profitable.
  • Age of revolutions
  • owns Bechyn
  • Bechyn doesn't have the Dominium Rosenbergicum modifier
  • Grant the privilege: Bechyn gets +2 base production and Bechyn gets +25% local trade power for the rest of the campaign
  • No, the nobleman shouldn't be preoccupied with such things: gain 10 prestige

Uniting the Cities of Prague
Prague consists not only out of one city but four: the Staré Mesto (Old Town), the Malá Strana (Lesser Town) located at the left side of the river Vltava, the Hradcany (Castle District) and the Nové Mesto founded by Emperor Charles IV. All four of them have an own muncipality increasing the administrative expenses. Should we unite them, thus irritate the burghers?
  • owns Prague
  • Stability at least 1
  • Ruler's administrative skill is at least 4
  • Age of Revolutions
  • MTTH: 360 months
  • Unite them: Prague gets +3 base tax, Prague gets +5 national unrest for 20 years
  • It's fine the way it is: gain 1 stability

Great Person Events:
As I'm no biographer for any of those, I haven't yet written flavour texts. This should be understood as a list of persons I deem as interesting, relevant and important. Two of them deserve a special mention: Comenius which was and even is nowadays very famous and Jan Rokycana the first Administrator of the Utraquist church.
  • Jan Rokycana (Utraquist)
  • Jirí Melantrich z Aventina
  • John Amos Comenius (Utraquist)
  • Krystof Harant
  • Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer
  • Josef Dobrovský
  • Jakub Jan Ryba
  • Frantisek Josef von Gerstner

Mission Tree:
Here is my proposal for a Bohemian mission tree. The Luxembourg part deals with reclaiming the legacy of this house that went extinct a few years before 1444. There's a part to end the Hungarian threat as well as reclaiming the whole Premyslid heritage (Austria, Inner Austria, Friul). I've also included two missions for Utraquist nations (coloured yellow).

Transcript:
Legacy of Charles IV, Pater Patriae
‘When Charles IV became Holy Roman Emperor, a golden age started, and Prague became caput mundi. We should follow in his footsteps and claim the imperial crown for ourself, reclaiming the legacy of the Luxembourg dynasty!‘

Luxembourg Heritage
‘After the last Luxembourg emperor, Sigismund, died in1437, the disgraceful Mary sold it to the Burgundian duke. We should contest her decision. ‘

Luxembourgian March
‘During the reign of the Luxembourgs, the Electorate of Brandenburg was acquired, concentrating two votes in their hand. This would be the next step to reclaim their legacy, securing us the throne of the HRE.‘

Bohemian Palatinate
‘During the reign of John the Blind and Charles IV, a substantial part of the Upper Palatinate belonged to Bohemia. Although, the territory reaching to Nuremberg was traded for Brandenburg, we‘re in a strong enough position to reclaim it regardless. ‘

Protect the Teutons
‘Our predecessors have often supported the Teutons. Now, that we border them, there‘s only one permanent way to protect them from the Russians, Brandenburgians and Polish.‘

The Conquest of Wenceslaus the One Eyed
‘When the male line of the Babenbergs became extinxt, Wenceslaus I acted and conquered the Austria proper. We should do the same and strike, when our only contender for power in the HRE shows weakness.‘

Otakar II‘s Regnum
‘Wenceslaus‘ heir, King Premisl Otakar II, went a step further and acquired Carinthia, Styria and Krain. As the lands are ripe for the picking, we should do the same. ‘

Retake the Friulian March
‘Otakar II was also able to build up influence in Italy. We should retake the Friulian March as we are truly his heirs!‘

Protect our Borders

Revenge for Jan Hus
Eager to avenge the burning of master Jan Hus and Jerome of Prague during the Council of Constance, our troops spared no one as they descended upon the once-great city, Constance. The mission of our generals has always been clear, all churches and memorials for this disgraceful council must be burnt to take revenge on the Catholic world - even only if it's a symbolic revenge. As the time came for the descent of our armies upon the Council City, things turned more hideous than anyone could have immagined. A lifetime of warfare does not foster kindness in anyone and with commanders eager to see the city burn, our troops embarked on a several days long campaign of devastation and plunder of churches, the university, the building of the council as well as the rest of the city. The city burned for more than three days and now the city is no more. Only through joint effort, Jan Hus' last abode was saved, so that future generations of Utraquists may experience the last days of master Jan Hus.

1.3.) The Second Hussite War
At the moment, there's only the event about the Confederacy of Zelená Hora. However, this was a full blown civil war, i.e. it isn't properly represented as of now. It's also an interesting war, as the Hungarian king Corvinus joined the fray, because the revolting Catholic faction had promised him the Crown of St Wenceslaus. All in all, this would make for an interesting disaster.
I've purposefully designed the disaster to have two routes:
  • Only an internal war: Hungary decides not to join or is otherwise busy
  • Internal and external war: Hungary declares an offensive war to claim the Bohemian crown, while Bohemia may only call in direct allies (not the HREmperor if Bohemia isn't ally to him)
Thus, there are also two possible ways to end this war.

Starting Conditions:
  • Podebrad dynasty
  • Bohemia is Utraquist
  • Bohemia directly or indirectly owns at least 3 Catholic provinces
  • Age of Discovery
  • Stability below 3
  • Ruling for at least 5 years
  • Ruler is Utraquist
  • Doesn't have the Religious Peace of Kutná Hora
Monthly Progress:
  • Stability below 1: +1
  • Hungary is a Bohemian rival: +1
  • Current ruler is Utraquist: +1
  • Legitimacy below 80: +1
  • Has a Catholic vassal: +1
  • Directly or indirectly owns at least 5 Catholic provinces: +1
End Conditions:
  • Stability at least 1
  • Not the Podebrad dynasty
  • Is not at war
Immediate Effects:
  • +5 national unrest
  • -20% nobles loyalty increase
  • +10% burghers loyalty increase
Starting Event: Confederacy of Zelená Hora
The Second Hussite War (1467-1478), also called Bohemian-Hungarian War as Matthias Corvinus joined the war in 1468, was sparked by the uprising of the Confederacy of Zelená Hora. Jirí z Podebrad's refusal of the Church demands to suppress the Hussite faith, had made the papal faction in Bohemia grow embittered. After Pope Paul II had declared him as a heretic and deposed him from the Bohemian throne, the papal faction declared him unfit on a meeting in Zelená Hora. Together with like-minded nobles in Silesia and, after being urged, the bishop of Olomouc they have begun an open revolt to Jirí's rule. They've also looked for foreign allies, especially in the east in Hungary, and promised them the Crown of St Wenceslaus.

  • lose 2 stability
  • Nobel rebels rise in Hradecko
  • Catholic rebels rise in Brno
  • +10% liberty desire for vassals per Catholic province the corresponding vassal owns
Monthly Events:
Nobles rise against us
More nobles have risen against us and joined the Confederacy of Zelená Hora. They see this as a great opportunity to weaken the king further and gain more privileges for themselves.
  • has the Podebrad dynasty
  • Crush them!: Noble rebels rise in a random owned non-capital province
The Clergy rises against us
Some of the Catholic Clergy consider the time to be ripe to rise against our rule to vanquish the 'Bohemian heresy'.
  • has the Podebrad dynasty
  • has at least one Catholic province
  • Crush them!: Catholic rebels rise in a random owned Catholic province

Burghers of <provinces capital> rise against us (a lot less likely)
Even a few cities have decided to rise against our rule, while the majority is still on our side.
  • has the Podebrad dynasty
  • Crush them!: Peasant rebels rise in a random owned non-capital province

Ending Events:
Treaty of Olomouc
As the war did go on and on for years with no clear victor in sight, the monarchs of Bohemia and Hungary finally came up with a solution that is satisfactory for both. The monarch of <country with negative war score> has to pay war reparations to the other, and after the death of the Bohemian king the Hungarian king will inherit the Bohemian crown and vice-versa. The Bohemian nobility has given up, as they no longer see a way to win against us after the Hungarian king signed a peace treaty with us.
  • Bohemia and Hungary are at least 5 years at war with each other
  • MTTH: 1 day
  • Finally peace: The current heirs of Bohemia and Hungary die, the Hungarian king becomes heir of Bohemia, the Bohemian king becomes heir of Hungary, the country with negative war score pays 400 ducats to the winning side.
The End of the Second Hussite War
After the ascension of a Polish Jagiellon to the Bohemian throne, the Confederacy of Zelená Hora has been disbanded, as the reason they were fighting for ceased to exist. Hopefully, the struggles and turmoils of this century will now have an end.
  • Perhaps we can now finally work together: gain 1 stability, gain 20 legitimacy

Related Events:
A Polish King
Before his death, Jirí z Podebrad has designated the Catholic, Vladislav of the Polish Jagiellon dynasty, as his successor instead of his own children. Hungarian Crusade
Bohemia's Catholic nobility and clergy has risen against the heretic king and is looking for foreign support by promising the Crown of St Wenceslaus to their saviour. Additionally, the pope has called for a crusade against those heretics and deposed their king. This vacancy might be a good opportunity to rigthfully claim the Bohemian crown for ourselves.
  • Is Hungary
  • Is not at war
  • Has no truce with Bohemia or is allied with Bohemia
  • Go to war: Hungary declares a PU war against Bohemia, Bohemia may only call allies (not the HREmperor), gain 25 papal influence
  • We have enough problems with the Turks: lose 10 prestige
Hungary Intervenes
The Hungarians have intervened on behalf of the Confederacy by declaring a crusade against us. The Hungarian king shamelessly claims to be the rightful king of Bohemia.
  • Throw them back to Hungary!
Weaken our Rival
Our rival, Bohemia, is facing massive revolts, as the Confederacy of Zelená Hora has risen against the Podebrad dynasty. They also asked whether we would support them. This would be a great opportunity to weaken our rival!

1.4.) The Post-Hussite Interregnum, Jiří z Poděbrad and Ladislaus Postumus
This is a very difficult topic, and I still don't know how to solve it all. But, let's start with the situation. Ladislaus was already corunated with the Crown of St Stephen in 1440, but the nobility sided with Wladislaw III/I, and made him King of Hungary. Emperor Frederick III became Ladislaus' custodian in 1440. All of Hungary accepted Ladislaus only after Wladislaw III/I died in Varna, but they demanded he should be crowned again, what Frederick declined. The Hungarian situation is already represented quite well(albeit a bit shortened, though replicating every historical detail would make that unnecessarily complicated).

In Bohemia, the Bohemian nobility elected the Bavarian duke Albrecht III, but he declined. After every other monarch declined, the consensus became that Ladislaus should be the future king. Therefore, the Bohemian nobility demanded that Ladislaus should be crowned in Prague, but again Frederick III declined that. During this so called Post-Hussite Interregnum, the country's government was executed by several parliaments (so called "landfrýdy").
Jiří z Poděbrad effectively broke this administration when he occupied Prague in 1448. Thereafter, he became a king-like ruler step by step, but still had to overcome several conflicts with the Catholic nobility. In 1451, Jiří was able to get Frederick III's approval in exchange for renouncing the demands that Ladislaus should be corunated as soon as possible. This decision was approved by the landfrýdy a year later. Ladislaus then was finally corunated in 1453, after the pressure on Frederick III became too strong from the Austrian and Hungarian side.
He remained under the regency of Jiří until his early death in 1457.

If Ladislaus had come to age, he would've ruled Austria proper (Erzherzogtum ob und unter der Enns), Bohemia and Hungary. As he died at the age of 17, he wasn't able to execute any power during the corresponding and seperate regencies.

So what are the implications for Bohemia? First of all, it's ahistorical that Jiří z Poděbrad can size the power so early as well as that someone who wasn't Ladislaus would ascend to the throne (at least, as long as Ladislaus was still alive). I would propose that Bohemia still starts with an Interregnum (2/2/2), but with Ladislaus as heir. Ladislaus was already destined to become the future Bohemian king, but the reason why the year 1453 is the year one can find in chronicles is that he was corunated in that year. One could also put in the year 1440 in there, as this was the year when everyone else declined, and it basically boiled down to Ladislaus. Something I'm going to talk in the next section is that legitimacy was an important concept in the Bohemian elective monarchy, so that Ladislaus as the predeccessor's son would have a prior claim, too.
Then, there should be an event to replace the Interregnum with Jiří z Poděbrad. If Ladislaus isn't able to produce an heir in Hungary and Bohemia, he should die and Jiří z Poděbrad should automatically become king. The Austrian Ladislaus should die, too, and an event for Maximilian I might be appropriate (even though Maximilian was born ~two years later).

So what about the case of Ladislaus not dying? Ladislaus would've become Archduke of Austria, King of Bohemia and King of Hungary. As Austria basically is concipated as the Habsburg union, it would be logical that Austria would get Hungary and Bohemia as PU subjects when Ladislaus comes of age.

To sum it up:
  • Bohemia starts with the Interregnum (2/2/2) and Ladislaus as heir
  • Bohemia gets an event after 1446 to replace the Interregnum with Jiří z Poděbrad
  • If there is no heir after Ladislaus comes of age, he'll die (he'll also die if there's no heir in Hungary). Ladislaus dies in all three countries. The current event for Austria is triggered to get a Restoration of Union CB against both countries, while also giving them a new heir called Maximilian. Jiří z Poděbrad becomes king in Bohemia, whereas Corvinus becomes king in Hungary.
  • If there is an heir in Hungary AND Bohemia, Austria will get a PU on both.
Here are the old changed and the new events to represent this:

Return of the Hussites!:
The Hussite Wars technically ended in 1434, but the country was still divided, between those faithful to Rome, and those still loyal to the Hussite ideals. The leader of the Hussite party was Jirí z Podebrad, and after various attempts of reconciliation, he decided upon a military solution. He raised an armed force in northeastern Bohemia and seized Prague with little resistance, he thus become de-facto regent and was later on approbated by Ladislaus Postumus. Years of internal strife broke out though, as those faithful to Rome, most notably the Lords of Rosenberg, and the heretic Taborites fought him, but eventually the Utraquists won.
What shall we do?
  • same trigger conditions like now with the exception of the religion
  • He will be a great regent: Jirí z Podebrad becomes regent, +10 decaying unrest in the Budejovice province, the AI will always choose this option
  • The Landfrýds are enough: stronger rebellion like now
Jirí z Podebrad:
King Ladislaus Postumus has suddenly died, rather suspiciously, leaving the throne vacant. The longstanding regent, Jirí z Podebrad, has acquired massive wealth as well as support of the population and the nobility - Catholic and Utraquist alike. It seems like our great nation will elect one of our own as King.
  • automatically triggered if Ladislaus Postumus comes of age and Jirí z Podebrad was regent, also triggers the Hungarian event for Hungary
  • Jan Hus knew the truth!: Jirí z Podebrad becomes king, opinion penalty like now for the "Return of the Hussites!" event, "The Heretic King" event is now triggable
Ladislaus' Postumus sudden death:
King Ladislaus Postumus has suddenly died, rather suspiciously, leaving the throne vacant. There are various claimants to the Luxembourg's heritage and throne, but some think our great nation should elect one of our own as King. What shall we do?
  • triggered by the Hungarian event if Jirí z Podebrad isn't the regent
  • A Polish King: enabled if Kasimir IV Jagiellon is the Polish King, Bohemia gets a decaying -50% liberty desire modifier, Poland gets a PU over Bohemia
  • A Habsburg King: enabled if the Austrian ruler is of the Habsburg dynasty, Bohemia gets a decaying -50% liberty desire modifier, Austria gets a PU over Bohemia
  • A French King: enabled if the French ruler is of the Valois dynasty, Bohemia gets a decaying -50% liberty desire modifier, France gets a PU over Bohemia
  • A Saxon King: enabled if the Saxon or Thuringian ruler is Wilhelm III Wettin, Saxony/Thuringia gets a decaying -50% liberty desire modifier, Bohemia gets a PU over Saxony/Thuringia
  • An Utraquist King: gain +1 stability, an Utraquist becomes king, opinion penalty like now for the "Return of the Hussites!" event, "The Heretic King" event is now triggable

Lastly, here an event about an interesting and also hilarious occurence from 1445. It would only work when the starting situation of Bohemia was reworked and made properly historical.

The King of Stadice:
The many years without a ruler have provided a fertile breeding ground for a preposterous occurence. On this year's St. George's day, a peasant appeared on a field close to Stadice and he didn't choose some common field to proclaim himself to be King Arthus, but the field on which Premysl the Ploughman received the Duchy of Bohemia. As he was neither able to read nor had studied, he chose Arthur because he most likely heard it somewhere and belived it was valued amongst knights. Around 2000 curious and bored people started to gather around him within a few days, and he was even able to establish his own court consisting out of scribes, counselors and personal guards. After two weeks Jacob of Vresovic investigated this incident, found out that this self-proclaimed Arthur is in fact his servant Jakub and now asks what he shall do about this?
  • Bohemia has a regency council
  • MTTH 3 months
  • year is before 1448
  • He is the true King Arthur!: lose 25 prestige, lose 10 nobility estate loyalty, gain a ruler with at least 1/0/0 called Jakub "Arthur" z Stadice with 10 legitimacy
  • He shall become our jester: gain 5 prestige

1.5.)Crown of Saint Wenceslaus - the Bohemian Elective Monarchy
An often voiced misconception is that the Bohemian monarchy wasn't really elective. This was due to the Habsburgs and the Luxembourgs securing the throne for over a century. Then, the Habsburgs abolished the elective monarchy after the Battle of White Mountain.
An important concept in this kind of elective monarchy was legitimacy. The son of a ruler would most likely end up becoming his successor, too. However, this had to be secured through granting privileges as well as buying enough votes either during the lifetime of a ruler or thereafter. Only when no son of a former ruler was available, the actual voting began.
It should be noted that the succession of Jiří z Poděbrad was special, as Jiří z Poděbrad deemed the election of Vladislav Jagiellon as the only solution for the Second Hussite War. Furthermore, the election of Archduke Ferdinand I wasn't a matter of course, even though there was an inheritance treaty with the Jagiellons in place. The Bohemian nobility declined the validity of this treaty, and Ferdinand I had to win the election. The only reasons he became king, was the apparent Ottoman threat as well as the presumptive prospect of a rich ruler (Bohemia had no money). Though, the latter wasn't true, as Ferdinand had no money himself.

To better represent this I propose a new government form for Bohemia: The Monarchy of St Wenceslaus

Mechanic
Bohemia retains the old estate interactions, but gets +10% nobles influence and an elective monarchy. The base modifiers of the Monarchy of St Wenceslaus are:
  • +10% nobles influence
  • +0.5 yearly army tradition
  • 25% Improve relations
  • -30 max Absolutism

The most discerning mechanic would be the election which mostly is determined by the (global) Loyalty of the estates. To represent the dominance of the nobles, theser are the following electors:
  • dominium Rosenbergicum (if Bechyne has the corresponding modifier)
  • supremus Regni Bohemiae burgravius
  • supremus magister curiae
  • supremus marchalcus
  • camerarius supremus
  • iudex Bohemiae
  • supremus cancellarius regni Bohemiae
  • summus iudex curiae
  • summus notarius terrae
  • subcamerarius
  • Carlsteinae burggravius of the lords
  • Castlsteinae burggravius of the knights
  • burggravius Reginogradecensis (if owning Hradecko)
  • capitanus terrae Moraviae (if owning at least one province in the Moravian region)
  • Royal City Prague (if owning Prague)
  • Royal City Plzen (if owning Plzen)
  • Royal City Olomouc (if owning Olomouc)
  • dominium Rosenbergicum (if Bechyne has the corresponding modifier)
  • supremus Regni Bohemiae burgravius
  • supremus magister curiae
  • supremus marchalcus
  • camerarius supremus
  • iudex Bohemiae
  • supremus cancellarius regni Bohemiae
  • summus iudex curiae
  • summus notarius terrae
  • subcamerarius
  • Carlsteinae burggravius of the lords
  • Castlsteinae burggravius of the knights
  • burggravius Reginogradecensis (if owning Hradecko)
  • capitanus terrae Moraviae (if owning Brno and/or Olomouc)
  • Bishopric Olomouc (if owning Olomouc)
  • Archbishopric Prague (if owning Prague)
  • Royal Cities

I chose the office holders as representation of the nobles, because they were chosen by the nobility since King John of Bohemia. For Utraquists, the clergy has no influence at all, while the influence of the burghers is increased. Conversly for Catholics, the influence of the burghers is reduced in favour of the clergy.

The voting process would be initiated by:
  • An heir presumptive is born for the current ruler, one may start to gather enough votes. If at least 75% are secured the heir presumptive becomes heir apparent, i.e. direct succession after the curren ruler's death, thus able to inherit the HREmperorship.
  • Current ruler dies without secured inheritance. In this case, an Interregnum lasting at maximum 3 months is triggered. If either 75% of the votes are gathered or the 3 months have passed, the player may chose between different options. (below 50%: weak ruler, at least 50%: normal ruler, at least 75%: heir presumptive or another heir of your dynasty)
Thereby, a weak ruler is defined by having stats below or equal to 3/3/3 and a legitimacy of 60 (normal 80, strong 100). The weak and normal ruler options can lead to the ascension of a foreign dynasty. Conditions would be an opinion of at least 100. If the foreign country is far bigger than Bohemia, there would be a 50% chance that chosing that option would instead lead to the formation of a PU. As there are periods without an heir, it is possible to claim throne and enforce a PU through war.

The voting system works this way: Based on the loyalty of an estate (when the election starts), the number of positive voters is determined, whereby the result is rounded. In the window listing all voters, positive ones are marked green.
Examples (Utraquist):
  • 50% burghers loyalty -> 50%*3 = 1.5, thus 2 burghers vote positive
  • 55% nobles loyalty -> 55%*14 = 7.7, thus 8 noble seats vote positive
Thereafter, one may chose to bribe one of the nobles through several bribes:
  • Financial bribe (0.25 years of income)
  • Making concessions (lose 10 prestige)
  • Approving a nepote to the military (lose 10 army tradition)
  • Appointing an advisor (+10 nobles influence for 10 years)
  • Neglecting corruption (+0.5 corruption)
  • ...

Furthermore, the "Elective Monarchy" idea should give +5 nobles base loyalty, and there would be an event to change the government form during the Age of Absolutism (already posted in the DHEs section).

Summary:
  • Base modifiers: +10% nobles influence, +0.5 yearly army tradition, 25% Improve relations, -30 max Absolutism
  • Elective Monarchy NI gives +5 noble base loyalty
  • 18 electors whose votes are distributed through loyalty and can be influence through several bribes
  • Options become available: below 50% - weak ruler, at least 50% - normal ruler, 75% - heir apparent or own dynasty
  • Current ruler can produce an heir presumptive, enabling the voting process, so that a smooth transition happens after the curren ruler's death (only way to inherit the Imperial crown with this monarchy type).
  • If there's no heir apparent, the voting is enabled for 3 months during which an Interregnum reigns. (can still elected the heir presumptive to become the future king)

2.)Utraquism - the moderate Hussite State Church
2.1.)A (not so) short Tractate about Utraquism before Luther
Utraquism is the moderate branch of Hussites and crystallised as the most dominant branch after the Hussite Wars. Before starting with the actual mechanics and events of Utraquism, I would like to talk about it first. Often, they are just considered as heretics who were basically Catholics merely practising the communion under both kings. However, this isn't true in so many different aspects, as it's just a derogatory view and it's centering the Reformation solely on Luther, Melanchthon and Calvin, too. For this, I want to talk about the Utraquist doctrine, ecclesiology and relation towards Rome before Martin Luther (corresponding to the years before 1520).

Let's start with the end of the Hussite Wars. The moderate Hussites allied and defeated the radical Hussites with the Catholics as well as Emperor Sigismund under the premise that their faith gets confirmed. The results were the Compactates of Basel between the Utraquists and Catholicism and the Imperial Compactates between Sigismund and the Utraquists, whereby the latter were more far reaching in the sense that they allowed all Four Articles of Prague. Here, it should be noted that Sigismund applied "reformatory methods" by reassigning former church property in exchange of a noble's loyalty.

The Catholic interpretation of the Compactates of Basel was that the Utraquists were granted a "license" to practise the communion under both kinds, and that the communion under both kinds wasn't superior at all to the communion under one kind. However, the Utraquist perspective was the other way round, namely that solely the communion under both kinds is leading to salvation and that the communion under one kind shall only be accepted there where it wasn't practised before. This was viewed by the Utraquists as a peace until an ultimate solution was found (nothing less than allowing the communion under both kinds in the whole Christian world).
The Imperial Compactates of Sigismund caused massive protest by the Curia, as Sigismund's compactates basically reenforced the Utraquist church as the Bohemian state church. I want to give an exampled here: the obbligation to the chalice was weigthed far stronger than the tolerance towards Catholics. This is one reason why Utraquism shouldn't be considered as a heresy, as the Imperial Compactates are the foundation for a state church in contrast to for example Waldensians.

I'll be now talking about the Utraquist ecclesiology which is a bit complex causing confusion and the misconception that they were just Catholics. First of all, it should be mentioned that in the Compactates of Basel the Utraquists promised obedience to the Catholic church based on the "sola scriptura" principle (only when they can be proved to be wrong by the bible). This was interpreted as only a pure, evangelical and poor church could call for obedience. The Catholic church back then and also during the future century didn't satisfy this condition, thus invalidating this article in the real world according to the Utraquists. The church union some seem to interpret into the Compactates of Basel is also contradicted by the separation between Utraquists and Catholics in the Kingdom of Bohemia which can be found in these very compactates. The Imperial Compactes went one step further and granted the Utraquists a self-administration, the sole right to appoint priests and bishops as well as absolute jurisdiction for themselves (practically, exercised by the Utraquist administrator and a consistory). An example would be that the Utraquists discarded Wladislaw II's proposal to approve the Religious Peace of Kutná Hora by the Pope by denying the Pope a universal jurisdiction.

Another point leading to the misconception is the fact that the Utraquists adhered to the ordination of priests by a bishop. As there were no Utraquist bishops (although, passages about this can be found in the Compactates), the only possibility were Catholic bishops. The reason wasn't that the Utraquists submitted to Rome, but the Utraquist concept of a timely and spatially universal church, thus the importance of the apostolic succession. Here, the hope that the Catholic (or maybe even the Orthodox) church might return to the right way, to the time of the Early Christianity. As the years turned by, this became a problem as there were no longer enough priests. The first approach was to convince a few bishops to ordain Utraquist priests (in opposition to the Pope). However, during the years of 1510s the view that the ordination isn't a sacrament and only the Holy Communion and the baptism are got more and more traction. In 1520, the latter views became predominant in the Utraquist consistory and were codified 4 years later in 1524 (so called Candlemas Articles).

Another interesting aspect of Utraquism is how it changed and was incorporated into the Bohemian society. Compared to Lutheranism, the most remarkable difference is that the estates (burghers, knights and to a lesser extent the higher nobility) were the "defender of the Utraquist faith" against the ruler of a territory, whereas, in the case of Protestantism the ruler of a territory was the "defender". Hereby, the clergy was not only poor with respect to wealth but also with respect to its political power. The political power was held by the higher nobility, the knights and the burghers (in form of the royal cities) only, whilst these three estates were electing the administrator of the Utraquist church and the Utraquist consistory (8 priests + 4 universitarians); the nobles also elected the three "defenders". This lead to consensus-building becoming the maxim of the Utraquist estates, thus offices would've been counterproductive and therefore weren't realised/fostered. It should be also noted that between 1436 and 1520 between 70% to 90% of the population were Utraquists (increasing tendency).

Lastly, I want to talk a bit about the attempts for a church union in more detail. When the Compactates of Basel were formulated, there can be found a theme for a close relationship between Utraquists and Catholics in the text, however the seperation between Utraquists and Catholics within Bohemia contradicted every convergence between those two groups. During the years leading up to 1462, the Utraquist administrator Jan Rokycana and King Jirí z Podebrad were trying to improve their foreign reputation by also persecuting heretics. Yet, this was doomed to fail, because the Papacy would then as well as later demand the maximum (restitution of former church property, no communio sub utraque specie, etc. pp.).King Jirí being excommunicated and the the Second Hussite War taking place make this failure apparent. Thereafter, Utraquism again focused on itself, i.e. heretics in form of the Bohemian Brethern were persecuted and the clergy polemicised against any form of heresy. This changed around 1490, when Rome became the favourite enemy. Though, around 1500 there were two tries for a church union by "moderate" Utraquists, but these failed again because of the aforementioned reasons. This failure lead to the opposition against the Papacy growing, cluminating into a new reformatory wave during the 1510s (this movement is sometimes called Neo-Utraquism).

To conclude, we have seen that Utraquism indeed was a state church defended by the estates against the king/Rome. It had its own jurisdiction and administration (Utraquist administrator, consistory, ...). The most important part of the doctrine can be summarised with the Four Articles of Prague
  • Freedom to preach the word of God (translating the bible, spread it in the whole world, not meant as spreading heresies)
  • Comunio sub utraque specie (only way to salvation)
  • Poverty of the clergy (in reality: also in a political sense)
  • Punishment for mortal sins
as well as the guiding principle of "sola scriptura"/"sola lex Christi", i.e. only the evangel as basis (no letter of indulgences, communio sub utraque specie, ...) and the view of a universal church (with Christ at its head and not the Pope) leading to the importance of apostolic succession. Furthermore, the Sermon on the Mount was the most important part of the Bible (in contrast to Paul the Apostle's texts for Luther). The most notable change before Luther could influence the Utraquist church at all, happened in the 1510s (so called Neo-Utraquism): return to the first state of the church (only the Holy Communion and baptism being sacraments), leading to the same stance on priests like Luther, thus discarding the apostolic succession.

2.2.) Mechanic for Utraquism
General:
  • Basic bonus: +10% army morale, -10% development cost, may not assign territory to the clergy
  • Symbol: Chalice
  • Possible heresies: Taborites, Orebites, Bohemian Brethern, Chiliasts, Adamites
  • Triggered Modifier "Catholic Monarch": Age of Discovery, Catholic ruler: -10% aggressive expansion impact, +1 diplomatic reputation
  • Triggered Modifier "Hussite Isolation": Age of Discovery, less than 5 Utraquist nations: -3 diplomatic reputation
  • Decisions: all Protestant decisions
Flavour text:
Utraquism is the moderate branch of Hussitism based on the teachings of Jan Hus, the Four Articles of Prague and the Compactates of Basel and Jihlava. Over the course of time, it theologically moved more and more towards Protestantism, with the last major difference being that the estates instead of the head of state became the defensores fidei. In 1444, Utraquism is only present in the Kingdom of Bohemia and in some parts of Moravia.
Mechanic:
The basic concept behind the mechanic is that one can play Emperor Sigismund, King Vladislav, etc. pp. by deciding which of the Four Articles of Prague are allowed in your country. Every single article will give a bonus, while having all gives an additional legitimacy boost.

The first of two resources Utraquism would use is legitimacy which is increased or reduced by actions that make you seem more legitimate or less in the eyes of your subjects. Thus, every non-activated article passively reduces your legitimacy by 0.5 per yer.
The other resource would be what I called Religious Heterodoxy. This represents the increase of heterodoxy within your society the more articles you are allowing. The latter happened during the years after 1436 several times, most notably the rise of the Bohemian Brethern and to a lesser extent the Sect of Miruš. Religious Heterodoxy is a DOOM-like mechanic, however with less harsh consequences (they are actually programmed), i.e. only one of the 9 negative events trigger, when you reach 100 heterodoxy (then again reduced to 0). The number of events is reduced for the last two ages, as some of those don't make sense for the latter ages as well as the necessity to have as many events as possible is no longer given, because the Religous Heterodoxy gain is halved for the ages of absolutism and revolutions.

To represent the close relationship towards Lutheranism, I propose an event (Neo-Utraquism, c. 2.3.). One could then choose to fully syncretise with Lutheranism or Calvinism or rather claim strong boni. Utraquism became nearly completely like Lutheranism with a few minor differences and a bit bigger one, namely its organisation and the estates instead of the ruler as determining factor.

Resources:
  • Legitimacy:
    • Revoking an article reduces legitimacy by 5
    • Gor every non-enacted article, the legitimacy is reduced by 0.5 yearly
    • Having all articles enacted increases legitimacy by 0.5 per year

  • Religious Heterodoxy
    • religious heterodoxy scales from 0 to 100, at 100 a negative event is triggered, reducing the heterodoxy to 0 again (DOOM-like mechanic) --> c. Religious Heterodoxy Events
    • base heterodoxy gain of 0.5 per month
    • every article gives 0.5 monthly heterodoxy
    • legitimacy gives heterodoxy gain scaling from 0 (at 100) to 5(at 0)
    • age of absolutism and age of revolutions reduce the heterodoxy gain by 50%
    • Religious Peace of Kutná Hora reduces heterodoxy gain by 25%
    • Humanist ideas reduce heterodoxy gain by 10%
    • not syncretising with Protestant/Reformed reduces heterodoxy gain by 25%
Articles:
  • Freedom to preach the word of God: +10% institution spread
  • Comunio sub utraque specie: +10% infantry combat ability
  • Poverty of the clergy: +10% national tax modifier
  • Punishment for mortal sins: +1 tolerance of the true faith
  • Freedom to preach the word of God: Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
  • Comunio sub utraque specie: Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
  • Poverty of the clergy: Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with skin diseases, and throw out demons. You received without having to pay. Therefore, give without demanding payment.
  • Punishment for mortal sins: Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

Religious Heterodoxy Events
Travelling Preachers Spread Heresies
Since 1420, the Utraquist faith has adhered to the Four Articles of Prague; the first of which is the freedom to spread the word of God, as determined by the Utraquist Synode and Charles University. However, roving preachers have decided to abuse this freedom and have recently began spreading heresy and dissidence throughout our land, poisoning the hearts and minds of the people against our nobility and clergy. The Holy Synod and members of the Charles University have urged us to prosecute these wandering heretics and imprison them. What shall we do?

The last days of <...>
Religious fervour has gripped <province name> as the population have become convinced the end of days is drawing nearer. Peasants are talking of signs in the sky and contrary to the doctrine of the State Church itinerant preachers and local priests are giving sermons on the apocalypse and the nearing millenial Kingdom of God. As Millenarianism sweeps the province, our clergy and burghers are urging us to intervene.

Clergy denies communio sub utraque specie
Some of our subjects have approached us, as the clergy denies to administer the blood and body of Christ during the Holy Communion. Those clergymen are in open revolt to our Utraquist church by converting poor souls to Catholicism. They claim to do the deed of God, but we know they only serve the disgraceful Pope.

  • Crush them: Catholic rebels rise in a random province
Demand for communio sub utraque specie
Even though, we call our church Utraquism which is derived from the communio sub utraque specie, we don't allow our priests to administer the Holy Communion in this way. Our subjects feel that we are deliberately withholding the, at least according to the University of Prague and many Utraquist theologians, only way to salvation. The Hussite Wars have clearly shown what happens if a man feels that he is obstructed from the presumed way to salvation.
  • Second Article isn't activated
  • Ready up our weapons!: lose 1 stability, lose 10 legitimacy, Utraquist rebels rise in two provinces
Anti-Eucharists
Receiving the body and blood has become an integral part of our liturgy. Yet, it seems there are preachers going even further by claiming that the mere consumption of bread and wine is enough to honour the Redeemer's sacrifice. Even an uneducated peasant who isn't versed in theolody at all, can tread the path to salvation this way. These preachers base this off the bible, but our universitarians have proven that they are just demonic heretics that we have to necessarily stop before they undermine our church even more!

Iconoclast Riots in <target province>
Hatred of the icons, images and ornates of the old Catholic church is a thing that many Hussites have in common.
Enraged at what they see as idolatry the population of <target province> have stormed many churches in the province, smashing painted windows, destroying icons and altars and pulling off the local priests their ornated tunicles.

Expropriation of the Clergy
A rich and wealthy monastery has come to our nobles' notice. They now demand to expropriate it according to our religious doctrine as well as, obviously, getting the lion's share of its wealth. Some preachers suggest to use the wealth of this monastery for the good of our poor people. What shall we do?
  • Third Article activated
  • Side with the nobles: +5 noble loyalty and +10 noble influence, -5 clergy loyalty
  • Side with the poor: -5 noble and clergy loyalty, -1 national unrest for 10 years
  • Side with the church: +10 clergy loyalty and influence, -5 noble loyalty, Utraquist zealots rise in a random non-capital province
A Clergyman has mortally sinned
Although, a clergyman has mortally sinned, and should be therefore punished according to the fourth Article of Prague, a sizeable amount of clergymen has sided with him. It seems like they fear to be next, as they might have sinned in secret which could be revealed if a closer look would be taken. Our estates demand that this clergyman should be punished regardless, as otherwise everyone could suppose to not be punished. What shall we do?
  • Fourth Article activated
  • Punish him: lose 5 clergy loyalty
  • Protect him: gain 5 clergy loyalty, lose 5 burghers and nobles loyalty
Sodom and Gomorrha
It seems that our doctrine for punishing sins regardles of stature, codified in the fourth Article of Prague, has been misinterpreted by the poverty and also some preachers. They claim that every form of wealth and beauty shall be destroyed, as otherwise we'll be punished like Sodom and Gomorrha. They've already started plundering and pillaging everything worldly they deem sinful, so that we have to act as fast as possible as otherwise our trade will be hurt and our nobility and burghers will protest. Or should we give in and go in sackcloth and ashes?
  • Fourth Article activated

2.3.) Events for Utraquism
Return of the Goose?
Master Jan Hus' symbol has always been a goose, since his name is similar to the Bohemian word for goose, namely husa, although being derived from his birthplace Husinec near Prachatice, Circle of Prachen. According to oral lore, Jan Hus said "{}Today you are roasting a goose, but from the ashes a swan will rise,"{} before being burnt at a stake during the Council of Constance in 1415. After a Protestant reformer has heard of this saying, he claimed that he might very well be the swan. With a Reformed reformer disagreeing with this notion and claiming to be the successor of master Jan Hus, they have turned towards us to settle this dispute.
  • The Protestant reformer is master Hus' successor: +60 opinion modifier towards all Protestant countries with a Protestant CoR, -30 opinion modifier towards all Reformed countries with a Reformed CoR
  • The Reformed reformer is master Hus' successor: +60 opinion modifier towards all Reformed countries with a Reformed CoR, -30 opinion modifier towards all Protestant countries with a Protestant CoR
  • Neither of them are worthy to be Hus' successors: -30 opinon modifier towards all Protestant and Reformed countries with an appropriate CoR, +20 prestige
Neo-Utraquism
Starting with a reignited conflict between Utraquism and Rome shortly after 1500, a new reformatory movement resulted, getting accelerated and fueled by the Second Reformation as well as the rise of Protestantism and the Reformed faith. This influence has lead to the differences between us Utraquists and them becoming blured. Therefore, it's necessary to codify our faith once again in a confession of our country(for Bohemia: in the Confessio Bohemica). Although, the similarities with Protestantism are apparent and evident, some members of our synod have demonstrated that the common denominator with the Reformed faith might be even bigger. Should we adopt this so called Neo-Utraquism or rather take our own way?
  • Protestant and Reformed are enabled
  • At least 50 years have passed since Protestant was enabled
  • Protestantism: Protestant is treated as true faith, same religion opinion modifier towards Protestants (+25 opinion modifier), lose the +25 opinion modifier towards all other Utraquists which haven't syncretised with Protestant, may now become HREmperor if the Protestant league wins, no IA penalty for Protestants and all with Protestant syncretised Utraquists while being HREmperor
  • Rerformed: Reformed is treated as true faith, same religion opinion modifier towards Reformed (+25 opinion modifier), lose the +25 opinion modifier towards all other Utraquists which haven't syncretised with Reformed, no IA penalty for Reformed and all with Reformed syncretised Utraquists while being HREmperor
  • Focus on our own church: -25% religious heterodoxy gain, +1 tolerance of the true faith and +2% missionary strength vs heretics for the rest of the campaign
Waldensians seek Refugee
A few Waldensians seek refugee, as they were expelled from their former homes in France and Switzerland. They heard of our Utraquist church resisting the Catholic church, and believe that they'll be safe from the Catholic inquisition here. Their believs, albeit in some aspects similar to ours, deviate and are reminiscent of the Taborites with which we have had problems. Although, they've promised to respect our rules and possibly even convert, there might be black sheeps among these refugees trying to reviving the militant Hussites. What shall we do?
  • Age of Discovery
  • Let them in: random non-capital province gets +1 base tax and accepted Waldensians modifier(+3 local unrest) for 10 years
  • Refute them: nothing
Waldensians preach Heresies
Even though, they promised to respect our rules, some of the Waldensians we let into our country are now spreading heresies. Our estates urge us to intervene and stamp them out, as they still remember the Taborites raiding and devastating our lands.
  • A province has the accepted Waldensians modifier
  • MTTH: 240 months
  • Eradicate them: heretic rebels rise in a province with the aforementioned modifier
  • Ignore the heresy: province gets -40% local manpower, +2 local unrest, -33% local tax modifier, +0.05 monthly autonomy change for 10 years.
Reformer seeks Safe Haven
Fearing for his safety one of the greatest Protestant theologians of our age has had to leave his homeland. As an Utraquist country, we first handedly know from Jan Hus' life that the Catholic inquisition can brutally suppress any refromatory thoughts. The teachings of this reformer sound quite familar, so this might be a good opportunity to come into contact with this new reformatory movement. At least as long as this reformer agrees with our policies and doesn't try to spread any heresies.
  • same conditions like the current Protestant event
  • Let us welcome this great man: -10\% idea cost for 10 years
  • Turn him away: +1 tolerance of the true faith for 20 years
Reformer tries to convert our population
Although, it first seemed that the reformer, we granted a safe haven, shared the view of Jan Hus, the reformer has declared that we're all heretics and tries to convert our local populace. Our clergy is urging us to expell him out of the country, while this might upset Protestants abroad.
  • 25% chance to fire after 10 years have passed since "Let us welcome this great man" has been chosen
  • Expell him out of our country: gain 10 clergy loyalty, -20 opinion modifier with all Protestant countries
  • Let him be: -1 tolerance of the true faith for 10 years, one random Utraquist province gets converted to Protestant
Reformer overwhelmed by the Similarities
During his stay, the reformer, we granted a safe haven, has also studied the writings of master Jan Hus and the Four Articles of Prague. Overwhelmed by the eclatant similarities to his teachings, he said: "We have been all Hussites without knowing it.".
  • 75% chance to fire after 10 years have passed since "Let us welcome this great man" has been chosen
  • Jan Hus knew the truth!: gain a 40 opinion modifier with all Protestant countries, gain 1 tolerance of the true faith for 10 years

Literature:
I recommend the books by Prof. František Šmahel who is a renowned luminary for the Hussite Centuries (15th + 16th century). He has written a compendium of about 2,300 pages if you are interested in every detail.
I've also heard that the books of Prof. Petr Čornej, another renowned Hussite expert, are good as well.

Acknowledgements:
I want to thank @Grand Historian for his, as always, great input when it came to wording, mechanics and balancing. Furthremore, @Dakkadakka127 for writting the flavour text for the "Travelling Preachers Spread Heresies" event. Lastly, @Martynios for the nice introductory graphic :p.

Now, you've finally made it to the end :p.

Wow, nice read at the very least.

I like the mechanics, provinces decent two. Mission tree and events always appreciated.

My main thought is I had never heard the term Utraquism before reading this, whilst I knew a half-decent amount about Hussites, why not call the religion Hussitism?

Other than that, I’d love to see this in a HRE overhaul.

Thanks!
There were several Hussite groupings:
Taborites: radical Hussites with their city called Tabor
Orebites: first lead by Jan Žižka
Calixtines/Utraquists: the moderate branch

The Utraquists allied with Sigismund and several other Catholics to defeat the more radical Hussites at the Battle of Lipany. Thereafter, they became the dominant Hussite faith. Their religious head was called Administrator of the Utraquist church. The first one was Jan Rokycana.

That's why I went with Utraquism. We also have Protestantism and Reformed ingame, and not Lutheranism and Calvinism. That is another reason.

Ah, I had heard of the Calixtines and Taborites, but not Utraquist.

In that case, it makes sense actually. Then again, we have Anglicanism.....

Either, way, these are some great suggestions.

I think I may have to comment with my own thoughts on provinces at some point including Silesia though.

Utraquists and Calixtines are interchangeable. Utraquists derives from communio sub UTRAQUE specie, whereas Calixtines derives from the Latin word for chalice (calix).

The thing is that Utraquism is just one branch of Hussitism. Utraquism was the Bohemian state church as well as the majority faith in Bohemia after the Compactates of Prague.
I've listed the other groups as heresies of Utraquism: Taborites, Orebites, Bohemian Brethern, Chiliasts, Adamites
I've also listed Waldensians among those, as several Waldensians came to Bohemia after they heard that they could defend their Protestant faith.

I don't have any strong feelings about calling it Hussitism or Calixtines, it's just that their highest office was called administrator of the Utraquist church, so, apparently, this is the term they used.

I would really appreciate a suggestions for Silesia, as I don't know that much about Silesian history. I just felt that the southern most province was just way too large compared to the others. I also wanted to only have 5 provinces for Silesia, so that they can fit into one single territory.

How do I upload full sized images?
From hard drive: There's a button sandwhiched between "Post Reply" and "More Options" called "Upload File...". Then, you choose your picture and wait until it uploads. After it has finished, your picture should appear below the text field.

From the internet: There's an image icon right above this text box. It's right next to the smileys.

Right then. I've used the following historical maps to draw borders for areas.

This is my map that I have drawn, 14 provinces up to 28. I know this is double but it brings province density to around current HRE level, and I would assume the HRE would get some new provinces on it's own alongside the Bohemian Crown.

P.S. Not sure why this image isn't showing up for me in draft so I'll put the link here (https://imgur.com/a/IJhe0L1)

So, I'll start with Bohemia. I have added one province extra on top of yours, the important town of Tabor. This was the town the Taborites were named after, and played a relatively major role in the Hussite Reformation. Whilst it wasn't it's own 'county', I felt it needed it's own representation and would remove the slightly weirdly shaped province.

11 - Budejovice- Budějovice - Bohemia - Bechynsko - Budweis in German

Tabor and Pilsen are the German names so I have left that as the generic province name.

These provinces would all be Bohemian, apart from Eger which would likely be Bavarian

I split them into an Egerland and a Bohemia area. I had to expand Egerland a bit else I would need another split for Bohemia which I struggled to find.

For Moravia, I've gone for 5 province, adding Jilhava to your draft.

I would like a Moravian culture to be added in the East Slavic Group for these 5 provinces. Paradox prefers at least 3 and their are 5 here, so this should be good.

Silesia is fussy. Their were way too many duchies that were seperate. Whilst I would love a tag for each one, Paradox goes with uniting branched duchies into one in Europe (yet they are changing this in India so....). I would suggest having the sperate duchies on their own.

Now Lusatia, just the one province added. Cottbus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cottbus) was a Brandenburgian Exclave. I left it with borders to Saxony as it shows that in some maps, though I think the right hand side should be owned by either Lusatian province.

I wouldn't be opposed to a Tabor province. Taborsko was even a circle between 1751-1850.

Eger could have Bavarian culture instead of Bohemian. I've written the following about it in my post:
There was only one city and a region with a big German majority at game start, namely the Imperial City of Eger which was mortgaged to the Bohemian kings in the 14th century.

Although Jihlava was important because of the Imperial Compactates of Jihlava, I think that's too excessive. I'm against a "Moravian culture", as I don't think there's a remarkable difference towards Bohemian. Someone like @Wenceslaus II. would certainly disagree.

Prov N. - Generic Name - Capital - Areas - Czech Name - Other Names

26 - Lower Lusatia - Luckau - Lusatia - Dolní Lužice - Dolna Łužyca in Sorbian, Łużyce Dolne in Polish, Niederlausitz in German
27 - Cottbus - Cottbus - Lusatia - Chotěbuz - Chóśebuz in Sorbian, Kottbus in German, Chociebuż in Polish
28 - Upper Lusatia - Bautzen - Lusatia - Horní Lužice - Hornja Łužica in Sorbian, Oberlausitz in German, Łużyce Górne in Polish

I would like a Sorbian culture for these 3, again it could fit since their is 3 provinces.
Silesia is a mess.

Tabor was important too, so I would like it. I'll change the Czech name to Taborsko

I thought that about Eger, and it is in the mod I work on (Beyond Typus) but couldn't find stuff on it searching the web. I'll change it to Bavarian though.

I would keep Jilhava in, since it was decently important and makes provinces sizes match a bit better.

Oh, not totally sure on Moravian then... Whilst most Moravians class themselves as Czech, they were historically closer to Slovakia than Czech's were up until the 16th century onwards when they were grouped in with Bohemians into Czech.

I can agree Silesia is a mahoosive mess, a clusterf**k if I can say that. I think my provinces cover the major duchies and the split between Polish and Czech influence.

The names ending with -sko are the names of the Circles.
Tabor is the city name in Czech.
Taborsko is the name of the circle in Czech.

Eger was part of the Upper Palatinate before it got mortgaged to King John the Blind. The imperial mortgage was never ressolved, though. During the Hussite Wars, Eger became the transshipment point between Bohemia and the rest of the HRE. The reason was that most of the surrounding rulers forbid trade with those "heretic Bohemians". Eger was exempt from this as it was an Imperial City and had nearly only Germans. Most of its citizens names were German.

I remember reading that during Jan Hus' time the differences between Moravians and Bohemians were marginal:
Wine culture <-> beer culture (economic reasons for that)
Stronger Catholicism with Cyril and Methodius being celebrated more thorougly
Small differences in the accent they spoke, but it shouldn't be forgotten that Bohemians never had a common accent. Thus, it's an accent continuum.

Ah okay, I've used the city name for province capital and the -sko for the province name in Czech. Generic Province name is just the capital for the most part.

Ah fair enough. Makes sense to be Bavarian then.

Hmm, not sure on Moravians then. I would add them but you would not, that would be up to the devs, they will have their own criteria for adding cultures.

Anyway, I hope I have been able to helpfully contribute something to this thread and I hope the dev's take notice

P.S. have you tagged Groogy and Jake and Trin in yet?

I've tagged all three in one of the first sentences. Until now only Jake marked the OP as helpful.

I'm also not so sure whether Lusatia should get Lusatian culture. When I read up on the Hussite Wars, they are treated as Germans (at least by Bohemians). I don't know whether that's because they were already Germanised or because there was a misconception.

Germanisation of the Sorbs happened from the 16th century onwards, only from then were they displaced and outnumbered by Germans

I think that Upper Lusatia was already around 50% - 50% for the countryside in the 14th/15th century. The city population always favoured Germans even more. This could be a possible reason for Bohemians not differentiating during the Hussite Wars, as they mostly only pillaged in Upper Lusatia.

"Due to a gradual and increasing assimilation between the 17th and 20th centuries, virtually all Sorbs also spoke German by the late 19th century and much of the recent generations no longer speak the language." - Language change was mostly mid-1600's onwards.

"From the beginning of the 16th century the whole Sorbian-inhabited area, with the exception of Lusatia, underwent Germanization. In 1635 Lusatia became a fiefdom of Saxon electors. The Thirty Years' War and the plague of the 17th century caused terrible devastation in Lusatia. This led to further German colonization and Germanization." - Increasing Germans and decreasing Sorbs primarily caused by devestation of 1600's.

"Outside Lusatia, [Sorbian Languages] has been superseded by German, following official discrimination from the 13th century on." - Anti-Sorbian laws were mostly outside of Lusatia, hence they got off safer.

"Around 1200, large numbers of German settlers came to Lusatia in the course of the Ostsiedlung, settling in the forested areas yet not inhabited by the Slavs." - Not replacing Sorbs at this point, coming alongside them.

Yes, there were many immigration waves of Germans, so it's a bit hard to say. I wrongly used the term Germanisation for these immigration waves, too.
The term Lusatia also had different meanings. At first only Lower Lusatia (northern part) was called Lusatia. This changed only after Corvinus controlled both lands. From then on the terms Lower and Upper Lusatia were used.

I wouldn't mind Paradox just screwing it and giving us Sorbians if Cottbus was added. Personally, the Cottbus province already is quite small for my taste.

Hmm, maybe a little small but the first logical split for the period. It can be slightly increased with ease so all three Lusatian provinces are the same size.

But yeah, cmon Paradox, give us Sorbian!
