It's not a recommended practise.
Even though the base structure of the game hasn't changed, many of the game's database files have. Some stuff is copied over at scenario start into the save game (like ministers and leaders), other stuff is only referenced (like events).
At best you will miss out on most of the improvements (especially in the AI department), at worst your save game could reference info that has either altered or is no longer there.
In any case, if you do run into problems we cannot help you. We can only support problems that arise from playing a fresh game on top of a clean patched installation (no mods).
