The problem is, we are both using 1.08 with the Nov something or other beta. I'm trying to play with a friend and we get the error on both ends.

Uninstall, reinstall. Then apply 1.08 patch. Then unzip latest beta on top of that. Do that (all steps) for both, and I think you should be doing fine
