Hi,

I just formated my laptop and installed Victoria, no problems were reported, I immediately patched it 1.03, followed by 1.03c and the 1.03c unlimited time patcher.

When I want to start, I get the initial logo, but when the intro is about to start I get an error telling me somthing like -unable to initiate video-

I have already reinstalled the most recent videocard-drivers aoround twice with no result, I have also been trying to adjust screen settings also without result.

Thanks to those that help

For a start make a clean install and don't put the limited time patch on. 1.03 and 1.03c are fine but Paradox does not support any user made mods or patches.

Try renaming the AVI folder in the victoria directory to AVI_BAK or something similar. Try following the other instructions on [HERE] as seems appropriate.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

I have reinstalled to the original version, have changed to 16 bit and changed the map name but the latter just cost me my intromovie, i have also turned off all my other programs and virusscanners and checked a number of times if i had the most recent driver for my videocard

and still nothing

What versions of Windows and DirectX are you running? What desktop resolution are you running? Are you getting any error messages or just a crash-to-desktop (CTD)?

I have windows XP, direct x 9, when I crash I get a windows message telling me sorry for the inconvinience but this program has to be shut down (something like that, originaly it's in dutch)

I somehow have 2 possible screens, when I go to the screen menu with the resolutios on I have a choice between 2 - "multiplemonitors NVIDIA GEFORCE4 420 go" and "standaard screen NVIDIA GEFORCE 420 go"
The first one being the head-monitor.

resolutions for the 1rst - 969,768 - 16 bits
2nd - 1024,768 - 16 bits

side note, when I start my computer my desktop covers the entier screen, after trying to run Victoria, It leaves the right side black..

I just tried again, still ni good, but I opened the error message of windows and although very techinical, one thing sprung out, a refference to a file they say is part of the problem ->
c:\DOCME-1\sam\Locals-1\temp\4ab4_appcompat.txt

I have no Idea what this is, but maybe it gives you guys an idea to what the problem is...

Switch to the other screen mode, the one with standard resolutions.
ie 1024x768.

OK, the "420 go" tells me you're probably using a laptop. Is the 1st display an external monitor and the 2nd the internal LCD or vice-versa? If that 1st display won't run at a minimum of 1024x768 then you won't be able to use it for Victoria since that's the lowest res it will run at.
EDIT: Or if you actually only have one display then try chosing the 2nd mode as Castellon suggested.

On mine I right click on the screen, then select properties, then select settings, then on that screen there is an option for display. Select the other one.

I think what you want me to do is change from the one only allowing me to go up to 969/768 to the one of 1024/768, I've been trying but it wont let me from their, yet it's possible because It was like that when I bought the laptop... Can I disable the first from somwhere so the computer doesn't have a choice but use the 2nd one?

What model is the laptop? Do you know what the actual resolution of the LCD panel is?

LCD panels are the screens you get on laptops and also modern flat-panel screens for desktop computers. The onther main type of computer screen are CRT monitors that look more like normal TVs.

From what I found the panel should be able to do 1024x768. Is your video driver the one available from Toshiba (28.46) or one from nVidia (66.93 just released today)? I found a lot of references to the black strip on the right side when people run Linux on this model; seems to have to do with the driver not recognizing the LCD panel correctly.

I downloaded the most recent driver of NVIDIA for all their GeForce graphic cards on windows XP a couple of days ago, I'll try the new one, or even the one from Toshiba, I'll let you know in a minute or 2 how they turn out

Please run "dxdiag" and post the results if changing the driver doesn't work.
