I just recently bought this game and was able to install it without difficulty. However, I encountered a problem when I tried to launch it.

The game began loading, where it cycles through pictures and at the bottom says what it is loading. When it got to the part where at the bottom it said "Creating World", the game crashes. The following error message appears:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library (This was the title of the error message)

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files....

This application has requested Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

My guess was that my graphics card needed an update. I currently have an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro AGP. I followed the link under the thread "Any Crash? Read this First" to the ATI website, but have no idea what update I should get. I'm not much of a tech guy so any help would be appreciated! Do I need an update on my graphics card? And if I do, any suggestions?

Thanks a lot for any help!

Please run DXDIAG, Save All Info, and post dxdiag.txt here (first delete everything after the Sound Devices section so it will fit). Also post your Rome/settings.txt and Rome/logs/system.txt files.

I think I got the dxdiag.txt.

Is this it?

And how can I access Rome/settings.txt and Rome/logs/system.txt?

Rome\settings.txt:

Rome is the folder where your game is installed. In that folder is a file called settings. Open it with Notepad and copy paste its content here.

Rome/logs/system.txt:

In Rome folder there is a subfolder called logs. In that folder is a file called system.log. Do the same thing that you did with settings.

I think this is Rome/settings.txt:

Thanks! Any help would be appreciated!

Check with Dell for an update to your video drive.

Also edit settings.txt and change refreshRate=75

I would guess you problem is around here:
Memory: 256MB RAM <--- isn't that a bit low for XP
Page File: 388MB used, 229MB available <- this suggest you only got 229 MB free on your system drive or you got an fixed size page file of 617 MB.

How much free disk space do you got?
less than 10% of the disk size and you get performance problems, less than 1000 MB/ 1 GB and you get a problem with you virtual memory/page file which will lead to crashes.

If you have a fixed page file size and you know how to change the page file size?
If you got enough room on your HD try making it a min size of 1 GB.

OK, forget Dell, just fix the refreshRate as I suggested.

As Surt suggests you are seriously short of memory; while I'm not sure that will be causing your actual crash, it will mean the game will run very slow even if we do fix your current problem. Any chance you can up it to at least 512mb, preferably 1gb?

What would increasing the memory require? Would that be something like getting a new hard drive? Or simply clearing space? I fixed that refresh rate. When I launched the game, I no longer got the error message but it still crashed in essentially the same place.

Cleaning a little out in your HD, delete some of you 117 Rome save games f.ex. open my computer and check free space on harddisk (HD).
Dunno if you can upgrade you RAM on your PC or if its worth it.

Those term you use there refer to disk space. I'm talking about system memory, Ram (Random Access Memory). You have only 256mb and I'm recommending 1,024mb (1gb). Given your state of knowledge you'd pretty much have to take it to a shop to get it done.

That's said, it's be good to know how much free disk space you have. You can either post the whole of dxdiag.txt here, or just double-click on My Computer and tell us how bit your c: is and how much free space it says it has.

As far as your problem goes, it's encouraging that altering the video setting made some difference. But I'm not going to suggest a new video card yet as I can't say that is likely to help. Try this driver first http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp

Local disk says I only have 98.1 GB of free space....

Here's the dxdiag in case that's not what you need:

Is there an easy fix for such a problem? I really appreciate all of your guys help!

Hmm, could this mean anything? I was looking under the "Add/Remove Programs" section and it had the game listed as only taking up 4.1 MB. Could that be an installation error or something?

Mine shows 4.09 MB. And my Rome works. So that is not the problem.

I definitely think its your amount of RAM and page file that courses the problem, I've tested it on my system (2.16GHz dual core, 2GB RAM + 2GB page file, 256 MB Gfx)

when the game is loaded and I can chose single player it has used roughly 755 MB RAM, when I have loaded my game it uses 950 MB!!! And the system with all I have in use uses a total of 1505 MB peak ... these may be inflated due to high resolution and able Gfx.

This would mean that your machine will have a problem when it has used all the RAM + the free page file (+ a bit more that's more technical), which would be half way through load.

To check your page file info open settings->control panel->system->advanced->Performance->Advanced->Virtual memory->change

*** Warning changing here may coarse all kind of problems ***

If you have system manages size you should be OK as it dynamically expand your page file when needed at a cost of some performance.
If its custom size you you need at least 1024 in maximum size, better 2048, and with so much free Hard drive space it should not be a problem, for best performance an initial size of the same is best, ie. 2048 and 2048.

***

Even changing that you may be out for a disappointment as the advertising I've seen says min 1.9 GHz cpu and 512 MB RAM (+ some page file) and 128 MB gfx vs. your systems 1 GHz PIII, 256MB RAM and 512 MB Gfx. (wow your Gfx is bigger than your installed RAM!)
On the other hand you may be able to run it very slowly ...
