every time I install the 1.09 verison, then try to run it. It gives me a weird error message, something about 'excel' then goes to the Ignore/Abort/retry menu, all of which just exit it out. Any help?

So you've successfully downloaded eu2_1.09.exe from http://www.paradoxplaza.com/downloads/eu2_1.09.exe ?

Yes, and saved it to my Strategy First folder.

And you double-click on that and get what exact error message?

When I click to play EU2, the icon the comes with the files is what I click on, it gives me an error message about: 'excel file no found, do you wish to continue?' then three options it gives me, if you choose abort it gives me a message saying:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error

Program: C:\PROGRAM FILES\STRATEGY FIRST\ EU2.EXE

abnormal program termination

OK

If you click OK, it just kicks you out. If I try the option 'Retry' after the orginal error message, another error message pops up and says:

Eu2 has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL

With the only option being close the program. If you click 'Ignore' from the original message, it gives you the same error message found in the 'Retry' option.

And yes, my regular version of Eu2 works just fine.

Erm, regular version? I don't understand. Do you have EU2 installed twice?
Yes, and saved it to my Strategy First folder.
After that, you did actually install it, yes? Just having it sit there won't do anything, you have to double-click on the .exe to run and apply it. The file you've downloaded is just a patch, not the entire game.

Yes, I installed the regular version over two year ago.

No, I have the game I bought in 2006 and the 1.09 patch

I know, but whenever I try opening the .exe file, it is what's giving me the error message in the above post of mine.

I understand, but to install the patch is my problem. I get an error message every time I try to run the .exe file.

See, you said "every time I install the 1.09 verison, then try to run it", so I thought you'd installed the 1.09 patch it successfully and the error was when running the game itself.

I can only guess there's something wrong with the .exe you've downloaded, maybe it's corrupt. You could try a .zip version of the patch, from somewhere like http://www.gamershell.com/download_11727.shtml , make sure you expand it using path names over the EU2 directory.

I'll try that as soon as possible, but I am having some non-EU related computer trouble right now, so it will be a while before I can report my findings back here. Thanks again!

- did you install any map modification?
- do you apply patch to fresh installation of the game?
