1) The AI does not make sure it has manpower reserves. This is especially bad for Germany and the SU, who build units until their manpower reachs 0. When they go to attack anyone, they usually fail because they cannot reinforce their armies. Even the US has built divisions down to 0 manpower. There needs to be a manpower check added (if possible) to the AI files.

2) The Japanese aggressiveness is vastly improved, but their naval arrangements need a major overhaul. In addition, they do nothing against the US in the pacific, instead focusing solely on Australia/Dutch East Indies. In my current game they steamrolled the dutch, singapore, india, and took australia. Now they are not doing anything, its as if the AI turned off.

They organize their fleets poorly, usually having a severe lack of escorts. In one disasterous battle, my 8 carriers/6 CAs/16 CL fleet ran into 50 japanese ships, only 10 of them were screens. After 3 days of fighting, 8 japanese battleships, 6 BCs, 15 CVs, and 4 CVLs lay on the bottom of the ocean with not a single ship lossed on my side. I am playing romania, btw, and my admiral was only skill 2 or 3, and my doctrines were fairly out of date, so i found the battle to be rather comical (literally every CV and CVL the japanese had was destroyed).

3) The canadian AI should continue to build factories, especially prior to war breaking out. In my normal DD games, the canadians usually topped out at around 70-80 IC (i decreased factory build times to 180 days), and they arent being as useful as they usually are. In fact, they havent built a single additional IC, and their army/navy is about half its usual size due to their low production output.

4) The Italian AI is MUCH better in africa, but it has one fatal flaw: strategic redeployment/overreacting to invasion. The Italians had pushed the british passed suez and had over 60 divisions in africa. Then, i landed a handful of troops (maybe 9, tops) and they italians redeployed almost their entire army back to meet my force. The british were able to march back across africa and reclaim all their possesions, while i continued my advance east, into the provinces the italians were going to redeploy to.

The Italians need to be programmed to not redeploy their divisions AND garrison their beaches, and also garrison the captured british beaches. Also, they maintain to many troops in europe, even with 60 divisions in africa, they still had ~75 standing around in italy. They dont need that many to have 3-4 divisions on every beach.

It might be nice if the Italian AI built a few IC to obtain the last tech slot, too.

5) Now because of who I was playing (romania) and my actions, i cant really say how effective the german or soviet AI was. One note: the soviets REALLY need to build some convoys. The soviets, having built 700 divisions, managed to easily steam through germany's 350 divisions (both were out of manpower), once the soviets reached amsterdam i pushed up to konisberg, trapping over 500 soviet divisions in W europe out of supply.

I took my time and destroyed all of them, which wasnt overly difficult because they were all out of supply, and they had 0 convoys for which to supply them. Also, because the soviets had reduced their manpower to 0 by building so many divisions, they could build no more replacements and i ran them over.

1) The AI is a nightmare when it comes to manpower usage. It's hard to tell it to do something useful with its ICs when manpower gets low (and it always uses them fully). We're aware of the problem, but it is hard to overcome.

2) Japan is much different in the version we're currently using. :) Note that there is very little that you can do as an AI modder to improve fleet composition. (Basically you can tell it to build more ships, that's about it.)

3) + 4) We'll look into that.

5) I'll allow them to build convoys, thanks for the note.

1.) As G'Kar said
2.) Expect a very improved Japan Ai for the next DAIM release :D :D . I myself was astonished about the improvements
3.)Canada and more IC's .Nice idea :). I think I try it out.
4.) This is a very valaubale observation. This maybe the reason why Italy is loosing so fast if the Allies are attacking.

Spocky

Understand that I'm a total illerate when it comes to writing code but I'm really curious - why is it so diificult? I also find it aggravating when I'm spoiling for a good fleet battle and my AI opponent sends out a SINGLE aircraft carrier (among many other weird and just plain stupid AI fleet compositions)!

Well, concerning manpower there are two problems: First, it is difficult to make the AI save manpower when in combat. There simply is no variable telling the AI to "stop combat when losing too much manpower". There are others with indirect effect on time spend in battle etc., but there's no direct switch. Second, the AI always wants to use its full ICs. You can tell it to make many upgrades, build province improvements and other things that cost little manpower compared to the ICs invested, but you cannot tell it "when under 100 manpower, just don't build anything".

Concerning fleet composition it is similar: There are no variables that tell the AI what a good task force should look like. It is hard-coded, simply not available to us. The most blatant example is the escorting of troop transports: A very weak point of the AI, but we can do nothing against it.

I had a feeling from my own fiddling with the AI files that the manpower cap wasnt possible. There really should be a command to stop land unit production if manpower drops below a certain point (say.... 500 manpower for Ger/Sov, maybe 150 or 200 for the other major powers). If you manage to break the opening lines of defense against either the germans or the soviets and encircle some divisions, its basically game over as they cannot replace nor reinforce their army because of their manpower shortage. I dont mind them continuing offensives when out of manpower, as the german AI usually runs out anyways. It sure would be nice to tell them to stop building land units when manpower gets low and shift production to air/naval though....

Another thing that occured to me after going through an old save and looking at how the forces were distributed- the german airforce seemed very small. Perhaps myself or the soviets overran some airfields with their aircraft, but they only had about 18 air units, almost all of which were interceptors or fighters. They had maybe 5 TACs/CAS combined, hardly enough to support a land campaign.

Good news on Japanese AI though, the improvements made to it were already very good, its nice to know there might be a real pacific war in the future ;)

Black shade, when the new DAIM is going to be released, you are going to see some vast improvents.[Damn! G'Kar and Spocky already gave the details :p ]
BTW, G'Kar? Spocky? I sent you a message 3 days ago and you still havent answered :( . Usually you answer after one day... maybe its because I tried to send it to you in the same time[like the instructions told me, G'Kar;Spocky]
Did you get the message and just didnt answer? Or didnt you recieve my message at all?

OK, I already sent you the reply. :)
Why arent you telling Shade about the massive improvements in D-Days?
Seeing those was a good surprise![but as I said in the report, it makes Germany lose by 1942  , the red army is sure stronger than in the old version :) ]
