Hey there guys, apologies if something like this has been posted already but i was directed to try the modding and resource section after posting in the bugs & reports section.
Basically i am having a crash to desktop issue whenever i click on exit to main menu, this seems to happen when both mods and assets are active, i tried all the usual stuff such as add launch parameters -force-d3d9, unsubscribing from mods and assets and then re-subbing, even a clean reinstall of the game.
I've got a feeling that its a asset causing the crash as all the mods enabled and assets being disabled seem to work fine, so my question is, is there an easier way of finding the problem asset? is there a limit as how many assets i can have? if anyone knows of a mod that detects faulty assets that would be good but any helpful suggestions would be welcome.
Its not a major issue as i can probably just play and not exit to main menu, but sometimes i might want to load another map, or go back into the asset/map editors to do something, it would be nice to do this without the crash and having to log back into the game again.

No, nobody know what causes it. I agree it's probably and asset, but I'm damned if I can find it. I'm beginning to think it's some kind of memory issue.

How many assets do you have?

First of all create a backup of your user config file (in the local appdata cities skylines folder). That stores which items are enabled and which are disabled.

Then get the Advanced Assets Panel mod and disable certain categories of assets, then test if the problem I solved.

When the category of the asset is found, enable the assets one by one until the problem occurs.

And keep us updated which asset caused this.

Then just unsubscribe it and place the backup of your user config in your appdata folder.

Well i recently upgraded to 16gb of memory and it didn't seem to make a difference, it still crashed when i had 8gb, my steam workshop says i only have 516 mods and assets installed so its not as if i have over a thousand like i have seen other people have installed. I've basically done the whole unsubscribe and re-subscribe assets at steps at a time several times over now and i'm still none the wiser as to which one is causing it.
Ah well, i'm giving up for the time being and just putting up with it until someone manages to find an easier way of locating troublesome assets.

Ok thanks i'll give it a try, but could you just confirm which user config file i need to backup exactly before trying this? i can see a gamesettings.cfs and a usergamestate.cfs, they are in the root of the folder, should i be looking in the sub-folder such as addons? Once i backed it up and located the troublesome asset do i just place the backup back into the same location again?
Also if you could link the advanced assets panel mod for me, i can't seem to find it in the Steam workshop.
Thanks.

I solved it by doing a complete unsub to all assets and mods then deleted the folder where all workshop items were stored along with all local folders. Then I reinstalled the game just to be safe.

But, TPB told me it had something to do with the amount of assets and mods installed and maybe reinstalling was overkill. But I just couldn't take it anymore. It's annoying to have to relaunch the game after every edit.

@Andypuk1980
I experienced this issue for a while and tried to find out what was happening. Not being able to find the reason of this issue I stopped playing CS.
A couple of days ago I sat down and unsubscribed all items.
After all I started to subscribe several mods and assets and reached up to 244. Then for a very short time i reached past the 250 items and my game started on this issue again.
At the moment I'm staying below the 250 items and not experiencing any crashes at all.
However it is a shame not being able to subscribe to more. :/

You can try backing up the folder with all the workshop items and writing down all your essential mods and assets Steam ID numbers. When you are making something and know you will be going in and out of the editor to the main menu, just have those essentials in the folder while the rest is moved away temporarily for now. Got that tip from TPB.

Usergamestate, and you just place it in the same location again (close game before you do).
